We left school and did our CSEs in 1984 - note no O Levels/A Levels or 6th Form - dear Mumsnetters

We came of age in 1986 - Hand of God - Mexico World Cup etc etc

Harold Wilson was PM when we were born

only CFs would call us ‘nearly’ ‘60’

Blimey @GarageBlues humour bypass? For what it's worth I'm similar age so edging towards 60 and did a cse :-)

BendySpoon · 25/04/2025 21:23

You’re nearly 60. You can retire soon, you lucky thing 🙌

Salad666 · 25/04/2025 21:23

But you are nearly 60? In 3 years you will be 60?

It doesn't matter what you remember, facts are facts. You are nearly 60 🙄

Who says this? I mean, saying 57 is nearly 60, is a bit odd... I'd say it's in your mid 50s ...

I mean, if a child was 7, would anyone say they are nearly 10?

No. So saying 57 is nearly 60 is pretty daft really...

No. No you wouldn't. So don't say you would.

57 is mid 50s. Saying it's nearly 60 is pretty daft.

WellINeverrr · 25/04/2025 21:27

You are though. Noting wrong with being 60, it's not exactly old.

NorthWestToWest · 25/04/2025 21:30

57 is 3 years off 60.

Seawolves · 25/04/2025 21:31

DH was born in '64, he would've loved to have hit 60! I sometimes shock myself when I realise I am now past 'nearly 60' Smile

3 years between being 7 and 10 is a big gap in terms of body size and maturity, far more than someone of 57 and 60.

I went to a school that did both O levels and CSEs. Along with a good selection of O levels I got a grade 3 CSE in metalwork which, given I did the practical with a broken wrist, I was inordinately proud of.

To be totally honest, I did give up anything practical as soon as I could (which for our school was the end of the third year - Year 9 now).

But I certainly do remember that everybody, girls and boys alike, up until then were expected to do metalwork and woodwork, needlework and cookery. But I was equally bad at making a wooden aeroplane or a stuffed soft toy. I wasn't too bad at cooking though.

One thing that I do remember though is that we were taught about sand casting. We were never allowed to pour the molten metal ourselves of course but we did everything else.

I also remember that there were classes in typing. There was literally a classroom with just typewriters on each desk (the old fashioned typewriters with keys and an ink ribbon).

But the one practical area that I really enjoyed was technical drawing. I was really rubbish at art and pottery etc but I really did enjoy technical drawing.

This was the old school technical drawing using pencil and paper on a drafting board.

All of this was in an ex-secondary modern where we were the first ever comprehensive intake.
.

Sorry if I've gone totally off-topic but thanks for making me think about all this for the first time in very many years.

60 is not 57 though. And 57 is not 60! (Not even nearly... 59 is nearly 60!) Why say 57 is nearly 60?

I will say again, would you say a 7 year old child is nearly 10?

NO. No-one would! 😂

Can't get past this first post! I was born in 1968, took O levels and A levels!

But I'm definitely not nearly 60 so I'm with you there.

No you can't. I'm currently 60 and my retirement age is 67

chattyness · 25/04/2025 21:40

Well you're not far off it are you OP 😆 I was born in 1964 and I'm 60 atm. I get it though, reality bites 😂

MyOtherProfile · 25/04/2025 21:43

I have proof we are not nearly 60. We remember the 90s very well and they were 20 years ago. My teens believe they were 30 years ago but they can't count.

@Another2Cats I've got an O-level in technical drawing! I really enjoyed it but it's one of those things that computers have largely replaced. I'm sure I could still do 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degree angles with nothing more than a ruler, a compass and a sharp pencil.

We didn't have typing but we did have cookery, needlework, woodwork and metalwork that everyone had to do for secondary years 1-4. Looking back at the metalwork I'm amazed at what they made us do. We didn't do metal casting but we did use full-sized lathes which are genuinely lethal if you're not careful.

Woodenpigeon · 25/04/2025 21:44

I’m similar age and we were the first year the school started a sixth form. But most teenagers left to do YTS.
Iceland/food warehouse do the over 60’s discount all day not just the morning!

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 21:00

Yes but no contemporaries I know did

Well, I didn't do O levels or A levels because I'm Dutch, so I did the Dutch equivalent of A levels. As did all of my peers - education to age 18 was compulsory for my age cohort, with the final two years (ages 16 and 17) not necessarily having to be fully school based but often hybrid, with 2 days a week in school and 3 days a week serving an apprenticeship and earning a wage.

OnlyFannys · 25/04/2025 21:46

I can understand your confusion as someone born in 1986 who is apparently nearly 40 despite the 80s only being about 20 years or so ago?!! It's very strange isn't it

CiaoMeow · 25/04/2025 21:47

But 57/58 IS nearly 60. It's only 36 months at the very most. And much closer to 60 than 50.

Own it. It’s not that big a deal.

orangetriangle · 25/04/2025 21:51

born in 1969 and consider myself not far off 60
my body does though in my head I'm 20!!
I did o levels and remember the rooms full of typewriters at school
lucky to be a teenager in the 80s fab music
Grateful to be here and relatively fit and well too many of my age are not so lucky

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 25/04/2025 21:56

You can’t be nearly 60. I was born in 1985 and I’m only 25. You must be in your 40s 😂.
