There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

Hate the term Fur Baby, my dogs are dogs and part of the family.

So do i and i have 3 .
Same as with kids of which i also have 3😊
I do not impose either my dogs or my kids when they were younger on other people and prefer the same respect back.
I wonder how much stock in shops gets pissed on .
That said the majority of dogs are so much nicer than many people !

I agree. I’m absolutely sick of bad dog owners.

We were on holiday last week. My daughter (5) was walking along holding her football then accidentally dropped it. She doesn’t like dogs. The ball rolled down the hill, we ran to catch it but a dog was quicker and was snarling and growling as my daughter approached the ball.

Then yesterday my husband and (same) daughter were playing frisbee on a grassy area off to the side of a playground. There isn’t a gate that closes but it was in the playground. Dog runs over and destroys the frisbee. Daughter is upset because her favourite frisbee is broken and the dog’s owner gives my husband a load of abuse for letter our daughter play frisbee in the kids play area?!

This is just two examples of many. There’s shit everywhere (which I’ve just emailed our local MP about). We’ve had to change our route to school because my daughter can’t ride her scooter along the usual route because everyone seems to think it’s a dog toilet and there’s crap every few feet.

I’m aware the dog lovers will be along to say we’re unreasonable but it’s just out of hand in my area and I’m sick of it.

I'm a "dog lover" and you are absolutely not being unreasonable. If a dog has sufficiently poor recall that it cannot be called away from a child's ball or frisbee then its owner should put it on a bloody lead. DDog wasn't off her lead in public spaces til she was about one year old, lots of people thought we were crazy but her recall wasn't solid enough in our opinion til then. If my dog ever did damage someone's property (she never has because I've never allowed her to) I'd be absolutely mortified and pay to replace it.

People who allow their dogs to run up to people uninvited and don't pick up their shit are equally as annoying to responsible dog owners as they are to other people, trust me.

DiscoDragon · 25/04/2025 12:30

Completely agree. I was walking out to my car a few weeks ago and one of my cats was happily trotting along next to me when one of the neighbours came out if his front door with his dog, the dog saw my cat and lunged for him, straining at the leash and barking and snarling, poor cat was terrified. The owner laughed, I turned to him and said "that isn't funny" and he looked mortally offended and grumbled "he wouldn't do anything" before sloping off. Same dog has been seen by other neighbours off the lead and chasing another one of my cats, again the owner has stood there and laughed. If that dog ever gets hold of one of the cats and kills it I doubt the police would even do anything about it. Our cats are very much loved and part of our family but that POS could let his mangey mongrel kill them and it would be funny and he'd get away with it.

My son has autism and is afraid of dogs, there aren't many places we can go these days without him being jumped up at or approached by them. Did an Easter Egg trail at a National Trust property at the weekend and went for an ice cream in the cafe and he was jumped on by a dog being handled (barely) by a little girl, he nearly jumped out of his skin. No apology or acknowledgement from the girl or the adults at all.

Anywhere that serves food and drink should not have animals of any kind in it, IMHO.

Also all dogs should be on leads unless they are on private property.

There you go I've solved it.

It's not really the dogs that are the problem, it's the increasing selfish attitude of society and that some people don't see why they should behave in an appropriate manner in shared spaces, so they don't ruin it for everyone else. They simply don't care if they impact other people - but they usually demand they're treated with respect, tolerance and deference by everyone else and there's hell to pay if they are impacted by being asked to behave in a way that doesn't impact others negatively.

They want a dog and so they get one and aren't in the slightest bit interested in anything other than fulfilling their want with none of the responsibility that comes with either dog ownership or being a member of society.

Even if all dogs dropped off the face of the earth tomorrow those people would still have that attitude and still manage to ruin shared spaces for others in existing, new and original ways. At the moment it's dogs, and I can forsee eventually the popularity will drop because rules will change and they will be restricted and then something else will take their place.

As ever, it's humans causing this, the dogs are just a symptom.

This is the best analysis I have seen. It really is the attitude of some people that is causing issues.

It happens with parents who believe their child has rights over everyone else, the people who talk through the film or the show/theatre, who film the concert with their phones held high so you can't see.

IT'S PEOPLE WHO ARE THE PROBLEM

I don't know how we change the current selfish, entitled attitude

chaosmaker · 25/04/2025 12:32

Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan is my favourite statement ever on mumsnet.

I fit all but the peri bit of that statement and find nothing bad in it at all. Most of my street have always had horrible dogs and the neighbours - utterly entitled anyway - stick their dog waste in the bin on the lamppost instead of putting it in their own bin or in the designated dog bin a street /short walk away. In their 20's and no problems walking either.

MellowPinkDeer · 25/04/2025 12:32

Agree OP!! Also can’t believe people say things like ‘I can’t come to work int he office today because I can’t leave my dog’ and get away with it!

Rainydaysandwellybobs · 25/04/2025 12:33

I have two dogs, I absolutely love them and they mean the world to my family however they are not bloody fur babies!
My (not very scientific theory) is that young people are delaying parenthood, often almost towards middle age so they use pets as 'children for now'. In their minds they should be able to take their 'children' everywhere with them.
My biggest annoyance is going out to pubs and bars at night and dogs being there, I have put my nice clothes on so I don't want random dog hair/slobber/smell all over me thank you!

Deathraystare · 25/04/2025 12:33

They even try to bring them on the psych wards!!!!

Ok we did 'have' to allow a 'support' dog with a visitor. So many people say they cannot leave their dog alone. Well train them you stupid lazy people!!

Oh this irritates the shit out of me as well. Children should not be in charge of a dog until they are teenagers or so.

Outrageistheopiateofthemasses · 25/04/2025 12:34

With you all the way OP. I don't hate dogs. But I don't like them enough to tolerate them. And they are so intrusive and their owners are so entitled. It's too much

Mrsbloggz · 25/04/2025 12:34

I am post menopausal and also thoroughly sick to death of dogs and their stupid arrogant pathetic owners.

DazedAndConfused321 · 25/04/2025 12:35

I hate dogs, I had one as a child that I loved because he was small and didn't stink but I wouldn't choose to have a dog again. They smell, they're noisy, they're dirty and don't get me started on the 'fur babies' shite.

I'm sick of going to cafes and having to smell wet dog while eating a pastry. And I can't take my children to the park without being on the lookout for vile untrained dogs running free while their owners pathetically say "he's friendly!!"

What confuses me even more is sad pet owners who claim their dog is part of their family, dogs are people, they're their babies etc etc but eat meat! If I claimed that any animal was part of my family and akin to a child I wouldn't be eating other animals!

GlennCloseButNoCigar · 25/04/2025 12:36

Absolutely hate having dogs other than guide dogs etc in food spaces. It’s so smelly and they beg, whine, bark etc. Dint get me started on them volleying you down in the park, sodding endurance test to go for a nice walk. Thankfully my local park now has a dog free section.

StormyPotatoes · 25/04/2025 12:37

I agree. I always liked dogs and now I kind of hate them. My son is terrified and it's really hard to help him become comfortably and feel safe when we end up having dogs bounding over with the usual "it's okay, he's friendly". Just fuck off with your fucking dog and leave us alone!

I almost tripped over one in John Lewis a couple of weeks ago because the owner wasn't watching. Why it's even necessary to have a dog in John Lewis is beyond me.

SnoozingFox · 25/04/2025 12:37

I think what has changed is the feeling that dog owners don't think they have to keep their dogs to themselves.

OK, they have a dog and they love the dog and refer to it by all sorts of stupid names. Their choice. It is MY choice not to have a dog and what that means is that I expect the owners to respect that and keep their dogs the fuck away from me. I don't care if it's "only being friendly" or trying to take a chunk out of my leg. I don't want it anywhere near me.

This is what the unhinged owners can't get their heads round, they cannot comprehend that not everyone feels the same way about their furbaby. It's totally selfish and entitled.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 25/04/2025 12:39

Is this a post COVID thing? All the people who got dogs in lockdown?

Agree but no doubt you’ll be told dogs (dog owners) have the right to be where they want

ByMerryKoala · 25/04/2025 12:41

I think the march of the fur baby was well under way before COVID but there are so many more dogs around now and places are so desperate for custom that they've opened their doors to them - perhaps without realising how off putting the rest of us find it.

John Lewis, FFS, who wants to buy a piece of clothing that's had a dog nose around it? No thanks, I'll go elsewhere.

Rummly · 25/04/2025 12:42

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 25/04/2025 12:17

Because low lifes steal them.

Dog theft. 🙄

Yeah, there are gangs stealing crappy mutts all over the place. They’re all snatched for dog fighting rings or dodgy restaurants or something. Just look at Facebook or Nextdoor, those totally believable and not at all stupid social media sites.

Dog owners: keep your fucking hounds under control and tie them them up in the street. We don’t want them in shops or anywhere else indoors. Thanks.

VenusClapTrap · 25/04/2025 12:42

I was in Peter Jones the other week and it was full of dogs. WTF. How is that a dog appropriate environment? I don’t want to spend money on products that have bits of dog hair/slobber/other canine excretions on.

I’m afraid I’m one of those people who takes their handbag chihuahua everywhere. He’s great and makes me and lots of other people very happy and I much prefer his company to anyone else’s. He’s quiet and often people don’t even notice him. And he brings so much joy to people. I actually have the opposite problem, that people, especially small kids, are always running up and wanting to touch and pester him in cafes and public spaces if he’s visible to them. Luckily he’s an absolute wonder with people and tolerates all the patting and ear pulling like a champ. I once had a woman literally shove her face up to his and try to snog him (complete stranger) and I had to tell her to back off because I could see his warning signs that he was not comfortable (and would you be if a stranger did that to you?!).

I’m sure I’ll have plenty of people disagree and think I’m the enemy here but I could be sitting next to you in a cafe right now with my snoozing pocket chihuahua and you probably haven’t even noticed him!

It wouldn't make me happy if you came and sat next to me in a café. A café is for people not dogs.

Completely agree. Its out of control.

Sandbanks beach was absolutely FULL of dogs last weekend, peeing and pooping all in the sand and sea, running into me all damp fur, yapping away, utterly ridiculous.

I can't stand being touched by a slobbery wet dog, why inflict that on me?
