There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

Absolutely sick of it, it's gotten so much worse in recent years, I feel we're being chased away from enjoying the outside. It's so hard when you have young children who are afraid of dogs and useless dog owners allow their off lead dogs to chase and terrify my children. In my area it is illegal for dogs to be in children's play areas, this is of course completely ignored and on Firday alone I must have counted at least 5 dogs off lead running around in our small village children's play area, it's just so inconsiderate and unfair, and the dog people will hear no negative feedback, completely exhausting!

pigsDOfly · 25/04/2025 12:14

Where on earth do you live that dogs are given such freedom?

All the beaches I know of on the South Coast near where I live have dog free areas during the warmer months and in the small town I live in very few shops, and certainly not the library, allow dogs.

I have a dog, though I'm not a 'Doggo Nutter', nor do I refer to my dog as my 'fur baby'.

And whilst I agree that some dog owners aren't controlling their dogs properly your reference to a 'peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan' is pretty offensive and as pp said your rant does, indeed, sound pretty deranged

Maybe take a few deep breaths OP.

London...it's nuts.

Ferretedaway · 26/04/2025 23:11

Well, both your grandson and the dog have horrid recall

when someone is terrified or phobic, recall doesn’t come into it. It’s a fight and flight reaction.

MillieMinx · 26/04/2025 23:13

I think the dogs in public places culture has got a bit out of hand in the UK. I noticed that on a visit back recently. We do have places over here in NZ where you can take your dogs but it’s not everywhere. I have two dogs and they will sit quietly while we have a cuppa and mostly sit under the chair or table out of the way. Dogs are losing their true nature due to being pampered and treated like children. They are bored but overwhelmed with expectations to be a cute piece of floof. Dogs need training and boundaries not to be paraded around in stupid outfits or stuck indoors all day. They are animals not humans and need to have their best life as a dog should.

Daddyoffive · 26/04/2025 22:55

I completely agree why the fuck does everybody need a dog? Particularly people who have a baby too. Isn't it enough to have a baby to care for?

Why did you need another 4 kids after the first one?

BizzyLizzyandLittleMo · 26/04/2025 23:25

Yup, they even go to church these days by all accounts 🙄

Pupinskipops · 26/04/2025 23:33

Dog's are fine. Ban the people.

dottiehens · 26/04/2025 23:35

Yes and they are here to stay. More people are going for dogs rather than children. They are just one of those things will never changed back now. Business catering for them is the obvious thing to do.

LemonFinger · 26/04/2025 23:42

I love dogs but only well behaved ones should be welcome in "people spaces". I think dogs are very much animals, very lovable, very affectionate and intelligent, but they are still animals, albeit part of our families and households. They are not babies and need to not be coddled and left to run riot.

there's a thread on here about bringing back dog licences. I'm agreement with that.

Come back, Barbara Woodhouse.

StScholastica · 26/04/2025 23:47

We went for a walk in an English forestry woodland last week. Passed lots of families and lots of dogs on the way. One wee lass (guessing autistic) was having a meltdown re the numbers of dogs running up to her. Both she and her Mum were quite distressed.
Our dog (tiny) was on a lead because he has been attacked in the past so we keep him close. As we rounded a bend an older couple with 3 big and out of control poodle crosses came towards us. They heard the screaming and asked what was going on, we mentioned that a little girl was very distressed and said it might be a good idea if they put their dogs on a lead before rounding the corner.
We got told that the child would "have to get a fucking grip because the dogs had as much right to be there as she did".
When did we become such a nation of morons?

OonaStubbs · 27/04/2025 00:28

Dogs are not "here to stay". There will be a massive crack down on them before long as more than more people are sick of them of them and are becoming less and less afraid of making their feelings known.

You keep saying this. What "crack down" are you on about, and what form will it take? Go on.. you talk like you know something we don't. What is it?

giddyauntie123 · 27/04/2025 00:40

You’re supposed to be the leader of the pack, not the other way around. I think there's a lack of training dogs issue for sure. I saw a dog eating off a womans plate in a restaurant today.
Dogs need boundaries and structure — you’re meant to be in charge, not letting them call the shots. The whole fur baby thing is weird, letting dogs jump up is weird, i don't care, i love dogs but they shouldn't be jumping up or eating off a plate in a restaurant.

Dog owners who insist on bringing dogs everywhere even if it upsets people remind me so much of the Transwomen who invade women's spaces. Just to be awkward and be validated.

We need a Supreme Court ruling that dogs are NOT humans. 😉

💯

Me: pushes double decker twin pushchair down the road, minding own business

Dog: runs from owner on unfathomably long lead and starts sniffing around child on bottom bunk

Owner: "Don't worry, he's friendly!"

Me: Not wanting random, potentially dangerous, slobbering dog near my child, and incredulous it would happen "Erm. OK then?"

pushes double decker twin pushchair across a park, where dogs are meant to be kept on leads, minding own business

Dog off lead: bounds over

Me: "Get your dog off my child!"

Owner: "Oh but she's friendly/just saying hello/dogs need to use the park too!"

Me: "..."

Me: goes to café/cinema/bus/anywhere
"Stinks of dog in here"

Owner: "But my furbaby!"

Me: inevitably gets dog shit on pram wheels on a weekly basis

BlueFlowers5 · 27/04/2025 02:56

Wild eyed cat woman here. In my area, the police run dog training courses, I've just found out.

If dogs aren't trained and under their owners control, and attack someone, the dog will suffer not the owner.

So it's a kindness to your dog if you get it trained.

I once looked after a lovely man with severe autism who was TERRIFIED of dogs.

We were once having a picnic and a dog came over, I asked the owner to call it away as the man I was supporting was really visibly anxious and she responded with, “it’s okay, she’s friendly”.

It was the only time I’ve properly lost my shit in public.

I understand that we needed to work with him on his phobia but her entitlement was insane.

Same with children. Children are small. Some dogs are huge. It must be like being faced with a brown bear.

That’s awful I had a severe dog phobia and I woukd have been the same in fact there are certain parks I would go to incase a friendly spaniel came bounding up. I’d physically scream and still get the same oh he lock you to death. I did beat the phobia mainly with dizapam wrongly prescribed for menopause and hypno amd help from a dog trainer who said my fear reaction was attracting dogs!
I now own a greyhound and he’s helped more mainly as he big and other dogs don’t want to go near him maybe ? I would recommend if he’s willing to seek out greyhound rescue places and ask for help. These dogs whilst some are big generally are very gentle and sont bark or jump up and are used to be muzzled as risk of high prey drive only. Their calmer nature are a good place to start if he can xxx

Personally I don’t get why anyone needs 5 children but each to their own.

My parents always had dogs and cats and managed to care for me perfectly well. It was lovely growing up with pets around.

@Azureshores Oh Wow - about the Swan Hotel at Newby - that is really utterly disgusting. I love my dogs but as you say, those people were beyond redemption. That dachshund could have walked in anything before placing its paws (and everything else) on the table. I know it wasn't your responsibility to do so but did you tell the next lot of people who sat down at the table that it needed a really good clean?

And where do you think people's hands have been that touch the tables, chairs, condiments etc?

Probably because you can offloads dogs much more easily and cheaply than kids and they have a shorter life span. So you can have all the "unconditional" love and total obedience without any of the cost, expectations, gut-wrenching worry, anxiety, unpredictability of a real human being. Thank God some people are having 5 kids - not sure how society would function if everyone just started having furbabies.

No.

We are seeing a handful of dog hating posters who start a new dog hating thread every five minutes.

So you're just going to ignore all of the posters who agreed with the Op who have declared themselvesdog owners and dog lovers who agree it's gone too far?
