To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

Rude! I’m not a cow or miserable.

Not worshipping dogs is a common thing.

I just think dog owners need much tighter controls. Even you.

There is No cult of dog, you’re being melodramatic, but trying to infringe my rights for no good reason will get you more than rudeness.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 26/04/2025 08:17

You had a good point until you came across so nasty tbh. Do you like anyone?

Ferretedaway · 26/04/2025 08:25

Yep it’s reached madness level. Dog ice cream, dog section in cafe and pub menus, ridiculous amount of accessories, treats for sale. Dogs are great but we need to go back to the days when they were much loved pets and hadn’t been reinvented into some weird sort of human/canine species. It does no one (including dogs) any favours. And the whole emotional support issue is approaching peak entitlement. All pets provide emotional support. It doesn’t mean they have to be used as trained assistance dogs.

I agree. It's got very anthropomorphic.

IrritatedEarthling · 26/04/2025 08:31

We went to Saltburn the other day and were delighted that the funicular was working.

When I went to pay I noticed that they wanted £1.20 for DS but only 20p for a dog.

I politely pointed out to the man that DS is considerably cleaner than a dog, and takes up less space.

He couldn't provide an explanation to be fair to him. It must have been a rule from the council.

Aside from that, the beach is unusable by families because of the dogs on it.

SnoozingFox · 26/04/2025 08:34

I am hoping that in 4 or 5 years when the animals bought in the pandemic as impulse buys start dying off, that the feckless halfwit owners move on to whatever the latest trend is at that point.

There’s an independent dog friendly coffee chain in my area which is partnered with Guide Dogs. Each branch sponsors a guide dog puppy in training and the profits from their dog treats go towards that. This is a good thing surely, and it would not be a good look if their shops were not dog friendly?

It's a good thing, but possibly a one off? All the cafes where I live are dog friendly, so I don't get an option.

Humans are in charge .... they artificially created your pet. It did not arise in nature. It was deliberately fashioned by human inbreeding. Your dog is not a natural phenomenon.

Indeed, we created this:

Dogs sitting on train seats and on pub benches with fabric covers - aagh. That's dog anus and poo particles on those seats. If a human sat there with a naked bum people would be complaining and wondering about disinfecting seats.

Glitchymn1 · 26/04/2025 09:10

@Kardamyli2 What a despicable thing to say. Disgusting and vile, you should be banned.

..... exactly. I find it revolting.

Glitchymn1 · 26/04/2025 09:19

You think trains are clean? Oh dear. I don’t think humans are very clean either, nose picking, not washing hands after a poo, soiled clothes from their dirty houses and work places. But I agree the dog should be on the floor area or the person’s lap perhaps.

@DinoLil Rehome that poor dog- if your post is real. You didn’t do much research did you, getting a dog when you hate them so much. Do you have form for making uneducated decisions in life.

I think posts like this @MariLlwyd bring out new posters with whole agendas.
Vile. But I hope it brightens your day and makes you happy.

The pay off with children is that they are our future. They will be workers and taxpayers, they will be out medical teams, politicians, teachers, lawyers, bus drivers, care home workers. With the exception of working dogs, there is no comparison.

Well they might be if their parents actually taught them how to behave and that they aren't the centre of everyone's universe.

And yes, that applies to dog owners as well, although I've seen more badly behaved kids than dogs.

Not my point. Bella your dog is your companion. She will never pay tax or contribute anything to the future of society. We are relying on Bella your daughter to be the future of our nation.

That’s a sweeping statement regarding human worth. But then my job had made me cynical.

Well I don't have a dog or a child so no point on relying on them.

I still don't want other peoples' children bothering me as if they think I might be interested in them!

I'm fairly sure that a random heavy child won't jump on you, bark at you, give you unwanted licks or make you concerned about being bitten. I could be wrong, however.

OonaStubbs · 26/04/2025 10:38

I don't know what the answer is. Maybe to dissuade people from having dogs. Bring back the dog license and make people have to take a test before they get one, like with driving.
A dog tax on all dog related products, dog food, dog leads, dog bowls etc.
Designated neighbourhoods where dogs are completely banned.
There should be specialist dog parks and dogs beaches and dogs should be completely banned from other ones.
Dogs should have mandatory number plates, like cars, so that bad dogs can be identified, reported and dealt with.

Usernamenope · 26/04/2025 10:45

Inthetyreshop · 26/04/2025 05:49

Absolutely same could be said for children.

Kids running up and down restaurants, shops, buggies blocking lanes of shops, buggies in disabled bays, kids chasing birds, cats and stabbing eachother.

Selfish society is the problem and everyone is entitled or thinks their fur babies, children, cars, life is more important than others

So rather than complain about it live and let live because I am sure there are things we all do which someone else will complain about.

Some of those behaviours are true of kids but it's much more difficult to leave your kids at home or tie them up outside a shop or cafe.

I think the number plate thing is a bit far but they should all be microchipped.

I would support a return of the dog licence but at a much higher cost - say £500 per animal per year. Compulsory third party insurance. Revenue ringfenced to pay for a UK-wide network of old fashioned " dog wardens" to deal with dogs on beaches where they shouldn't be or those godawful XL bully types. Any dog found to be unlicensed and unchipped is immediately removed and destroyed - no questions asked.

Complete ban on importing feral dogs from Eastern Europe under the guise of being a "rehoming charity". Just no.

Clarification of the law on what exactly is and is not an "assistance dog" and legal protection for staff members who say that actually, your badly behaved labracockadoodledoo with a vest bought off Amazon is not assisting anyone, and that claiming it is gets you another hefty fine.

Can't afford the costs? Boo hoo. You can't have a dog then, can you?

NeedASafeSpace · 25/04/2025 23:16

The staff are not mind readers. If you would prefer not to be seated near dogs then you need to state that... especially if you are somewhere that welcomes dogs.

It’s more difficult if you were there first, opted for a quiet corner and then had a large group with a dog join the next table. Particularly as you’re halfway through the meal and didn’t know the restaurant had changed its regulations to permit dogs.

The absolute dream is that “no dogs” is the default and you have to jump through a million hoops to have one; not just in terms of acquiring it but living with it. Whereas at the moment, society has evolved to the point where we all accept dogs shitting on grass and pavements, so long as the bulk is picked up?! But there are always smears left behind and it’s normal. Fucking weird!

You have to actively seek out dog-free spaces, but it ought to be the reverse: want a dog? Onus is on you to find out where it’s OK to take it.
