To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?

There is now not a single public space in my home town that is dog-free - and that includes cafes, restaurants and even the library. Local beaches, once a quiet escape, have turned into asylums for the fur baby/pupper brigade to inflict their poorly trained animals on others with children getting chased, people jumped on and tripped over and all to the sound of hysterical barking and frequent dog fights.
80 year old woman knocked over by uncontrollable dog? 'You got in his way'.
Ask politely that you take your dog away from our lunch table? 'Go fuck yourself'.
Sit on the most remote bench you can find? Peri-menopausal wild eyed harridan lets loose 3 dogs from her 4x4 to jump all over you and laughs that it's 'their spot' and turns unhinged when you push them away.
Yes, this is a rant and yes I hate most dog owners.
This weird cult that values darling dogs over human beings is actually pretty worrying.
I shall await the inevitable and hilarious 'incoming' from the emotionally stunted Doggo Nutters.

I am in the US and saw this sign yesterday...

To dare to think that the Cult of Dog has gone too far?
TwelveBlueSocks · 25/04/2025 15:34

Totally agree.

@BasiaN you might want to start your own thread

Apologies. Im new to the site and thought I did. Thank you for letting me know 👍

Shcab · 25/04/2025 15:44

I agree. I like dogs but I do not want them to be in a cafe or a shop - it’s unhygienic and a nuisance.

MikeRafone · 25/04/2025 15:45

Dogs in my local pub and the owners keeping them on long leads - they then wander off causing a fucking trip hazard 🤦‍♀️

sitting near the table of whoever is eating, wanting food from them and begging.

it’s not the dogs fault, it’s the owners

MinnieMountain · 25/04/2025 15:48

Oh dear. I grew up in Pembrokeshire. People used to be very sensible with their dogs.

Are you North or South Pembs OP?

senua · 25/04/2025 15:48

We have a relative with a rescue dog. It was very nervous and growly when it arrived, which is understandable. It's still the same over a decade on and I have run out of sympathy.
I don't enjoy visiting them; it's no fun sitting there waiting for the dog to start snarling and baring its teeth because you dared move half an inch. I'm certainly not inviting it into my house so - because they can't go out without the neurotic creature - it means the owners aren't invited either.
The dog has practically ruined our relationship with them.

Perhapsanothertime · 25/04/2025 15:50

I can’t say I see anything like what you’re describing happen near me. We have a few dog friendly places and plenty that aren’t. I have had dogs in the past, I don’t have them now and no intention of getting one as just too much work and not enough time. But one of the biggest frustrations with other dogs was when I had one myself! People just allowing their dog to come right across the park to pester us, stealing my dogs ball, when we were on our own minding our own business. Then said owner gets all pissy when challenged. Urgh.

As a previous poster said, it’s the humans that are the problem. I see entitled knobheads everywhere, so it’s not surprising that some of them own dogs.

Okrr · 25/04/2025 15:51

TBH, allowing dogs to shit in public, picked up or not, set the tone years ago. What do you expect if that’s allowed? Dogs should be on the owner’s private property only, as long as they aren’t a nuisance to neighbours.

You must be in the minority, I guess. If most people disliked dogs being in shops, cafés etc, then presumably it wouldn't be in the interests of shop and café owners to let them in.

Your posts are obviously you getting all wound up, starring as the martyr in some wild and rather paranoid exaggerations that you fantasized. Calm down FFS.

Dramatic · 25/04/2025 15:57

I feel lucky that I don't live in a touristy area, dogs aren't allowed in anywhere here and that's how it should be imo

I am not a dog person, but what an absolutely vile thread. All the misogynist, ableist, ageist comments has made you look very unpleasant and unreasonable, and extinguished any valid point you may have ... 'Peri-menopausal harridan,' 'unhinged,' 'nutters!'

I would take any dog, (or dog person,) over you any day @MariLlwyd

Seriously, have a word with yourself! Hmm

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 25/04/2025 16:00

@PerimenopausalWildEyedHarridan

Yes

My daughter's local Facebook group are banned from mentioning anything to do with local dog/cat noise/waste issues (so it's mainly moaning posts about children playing on the village green).

She had a visit from the police because someone had complained about her antisocial behaviour because she had put a cat deterrent on top of her fence around the back garden. She did this because she wanted her three children to be able to play out without finding cat turds all over her property. Her children are not allowed to play on the green and annoy the other residents just for being children. The policeman rolled his eyes and asked her where she'd bought it from.

You wouldn't believe the number of properties around her who now have exactly the same cat deterrent on their fences because they also don't want cat turds in their gardens. It's about 75%.

Meanwhile, the woman across the square wasn't too pleased when her son, who was playing on the green (annoying the residents), suddenly started screaming. He had fallen and his legs were now covered in dog dirt. She ran to get wipes and set her 10 month old son down, who then promptly crawled away and scooped dog dirt into his mouth.

I really don't understand why dog/cat owners think that others must remain silent/just put up with it/be banned from ever speaking about the nuisance caused.

Soozikinzii · 25/04/2025 16:02

I agree and I'm a dog owner . But my dog is a medium sized mixed breed rescue dog and definitely a dog not a fur baby .

yoghurttops · 25/04/2025 16:02

I have a theory.

I have a baby (human) and my close friend has a dog (I have another close friend who became a dog mum and was considering asking their partner to pay “child maintenance” for their dog - I wish she was joking). I find it shocking how similar our experiences are. For example - sometimes I have to bail because I don’t have a babysitter - she also can’t go anywhere without a dog sitter. She only goes out if her dog can come, and so if we meet up it has to be dog friendly (which is pretty much everywhere these days). I think more places accept dogs than babies! Either way she is completely attached. Her dog is the centre of her life, when I remember a time when a dog was part of your life but not restrictive. I have more freedom as a mum to a human!

I find she talks about her dog, as I would my baby - it’s so fascinating!

So my theory is, with the decline in having children, why not replace them with dogs - dogs are like babies that never grow up. Many dog owners are treating their dogs like human babies. The amount of dogs in buggies I have seen recently is insane! I believe Covid has also accelerated this as more people found comfort in their furry friends.

FourChimneys · 25/04/2025 16:07

Just remembered a weird incident a couple of years ago. DH and I had climbed a well known hill, we were sitting near the top having a rest and a snack. Quite a few other people around, including severaldogs.

DH was eating a chocolate bar. A dog rushed over, sniffing at DH. He stood up quickly, trying to keep the chocolate away from the dog who had got very bouncy, barking and jumping up. I asked the owner to call it off and put it on a lead.

The dog jumped up again, making DH stumble so he dropped the chocolate. Of course, the dog grabbed it and ate some. The owner started shouting that chocolate could be poisinous for his dog. Well yes, that's why we tried to avoid letting the dog grab it 🙄

Another sensible dog owner told jumpy dog's owner off, he eventually slunk off down the hill with his dog on a lead. I hope the dog wasn't ill but if it was under control it wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Well a lot of beaches will be closed to dogs and their owners from next month. Its the usual majority now of dog owners who are just irresponsible and think they're above everyone else.

But Having these signs there doesn’t mean they will be obeyed. As we saw last summer, with numerous dogs running all over the beach. There was zero enforcement so many owners did as they pleased.

No, many people are not ok with dogs everywhere. But to say so is taboo, like a few other things.

I do not want to avoid dog poo or bags of poo on every path, beach, road.
I do not want hairy dogs in a cafe or a shop where I am
I do not want a "friendly" dog bounding up while running or sniffjng my crotch.
I do not want visits to friends and family to be curtailled by dealing with a dog.
No. No. No. No. Go away. Get them under control and back to the bottom of the pecking order.

Theseventhmagpie · 25/04/2025 16:18

Of course there are some bad dog owners but OP sounds like the grimmest of human beings. I cannot begin to express how much I would rather spend my time with any dog on the planet than someone like the OP.
