It's St George's which should be a national celebration.

Yet nothing

@BusyAzureFatball - have you clocked that it's not actually St George's Day today, it's next Monday because of the late Easter?

TheWombatleague · 23/04/2025 14:05

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 23/04/2025 14:00

Genuine question - is there something we are meant to do to celebrate? Like a Guinness and big green hat for St Patricks... Hot Cross buns for Easter..
TELL US WHAT WE DO!!!!!

Stand on a beach and shout at small boats.

Myengagementring · 23/04/2025 14:06

It's not St George's Day!

Embarrassinglyuseless · 23/04/2025 14:06

It’s not a national holiday is it though? Although Downing Street made much of it and the symbolism of the St George’s cross has been the subject of much Radio debate today.

I think being outraged that the celebration of a mythological dragon slayer isn’t being taken more seriously by workplace is probably not warranted. Have a tea party, raise a glass in your own home or the pub - it’s not on your employer or the government to dictate celebration!

Shoxfordian · 23/04/2025 14:07

Nothing stopping you posting on Teams about it op

ksksn10 · 23/04/2025 14:07

Mumble12 · 23/04/2025 12:35

Depends really, do you get a teams message for every single event throughout the year?

We do.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 23/04/2025 14:07

Hang on... are we meant to be working today? Surely a national holiday means I can quit this shit and get to the pub!

ChaToilLeam · 23/04/2025 14:08

Not a thing I'd expect to see on Teams. Celebrate it yourself if you wish.

IHeartHalloumi · 23/04/2025 14:08

Does St George get a food? St David gets daffodils and leeks, I would default St Andrew to haggis (Edinburgh residents note there is free entry to the castle on St A day, but it will be raining), St Patrick has guinness - what does St G get?

I'm not celebrating unless he has a special food or hat.

Yet trans is celebrated. Eid is celebrated. Yet your own country isn't celebrated.

Weird

Also we don't have an office

op please dress up as Britannia and post that on teams

I’m certain that will do the trick , or make traditional St George day food and post a pic if that ?

pimplebum · 23/04/2025 14:10

Umm I’m not sure trans is celebrated , never done that day at work - sounds fun though , will suggest it at next meeting

You do realise that a lot of English people celebrate Eid don't you?

You do realise that a lot of English people celebrate Eid don't you?

But it's recognised. Big difference between recognizing something and celebrating it.

OP posts:
pimplebum · 23/04/2025 14:12

Nope never once “ celebrated” eid at work unless you count someone brings food in to the staff room and I will say “thanks and happy Eid “

StillCreatingAName · 23/04/2025 14:13

It’s also Shakespeare’s birthday (and date of death) today and not one mention on Teams this morning. Hugely disappointing. So I nipped out at lunch for a Colin cake- sadly can’t light the candles in the office-fire regs, what can you do- but we will be streaming the film Bill throughout the afternoon on Teams for anyone who needs time to reflect.

TheBossOfMe · 23/04/2025 14:15

Sorry, absolutely pissing myself laughing that the @BusyAzureFatball is getting all steamed up about this when IT'S NOT ST GEORGE'S DAY today 😂😂😂

So you recognize it's Eid...

But you think it's totally bizarre to recognize it's your country day?

Weird

You can’t even say you are English now, without being arrested.

I long for the days when Winston Churchill paraded about London with a bulldog dressed in a Union Jack Waistcoat..

You get arrested now for flying a Union Jack

Woke gone mad

Agreed.

I tried to look at a photo of the Queen on the internet the other day and three van loads of police turned up and arrested me.

Yet on the same day, loads of foreigners were given free massive big posh houses in Hampstead.

Two years to save the west

Etc etc etc

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 23/04/2025 14:16

Given he wasn't English, it is rather daft to celebrate him.
He wouldn't get into the country today, and if he did, the far right flag-worshipers would want him deported.

DUsername · 23/04/2025 14:16

Well good news op, you have a week to sort out your St George's celebrations. I look forward to you updating the thread with what you got up to

Gives people time to talk about it now and prepare

I think Jeremy Corbyn advocated it being a public holiday in England. And St David's Day in Wales.

So perhaps given that people thought he was the devil incarnate, that's why they are not fussed in general.

BusyAzureFatball · 23/04/2025 14:12

But it's recognised. Big difference between recognizing something and celebrating it.

We celebrate and recognise Easter and Christmas. As you know, Eid is a religious festival.

The English don't need you to sort out St George's Day, thanks.
