To be shocked by a transwoman guest on Jeremy Vine today asking a female caller what sex she is - and whether she’s “been tested?”

I genuinely couldn’t believe what I was hearing. A woman called in to make a point and instead of responding to her argument, the guest asked her what sex she was - and even questioned whether she’d been tested to confirm it.

I found it incredibly demeaning and unsettling. AIBU to think this kind of behaviour undermines the whole idea of respectful discussion and actually silences women?

@AlertMaker I think when we have got into a situation that even the nhs asks on forms about your “gender assigned at birth” then there is a lot of unwinding to do about basic biology and language…and some individuals need to prove a belief they have about themselves, it says more about their state of mind.

Lostcat · 23/04/2025 12:46

I found it incredibly demeaning

the double think is beyond belief. Exactly OP, and now how do you think trans people feel when subjected to exactly the same except in every aspect of public life

ImConfusedDotComHelp · 23/04/2025 12:48

Jeremy Vine. Not a great show imo. So he has a man who identifies as a woman on as a guest and that person asks caller if tested. Strange world 2025.

I get the assigned at birth bit. It wasn't assigned it just is. Not all this picking one of over 150 later and chopping and changes.

Sex is binary. You cannot change sex. End this madness and delusional speech now.

Not all women are able to get pregnant, even if they wanted to, so I would not go down that road personally.

But only women do

id say I’ve been through puberty when I grew breasts and had periods, had 8 pregnancies and 3 births, had treatment for cervical cancer, am currently in menopause, recovering from surgery for investigations into uterine cancer.

actually ‘I don’t have a penis’ would be my answer!

hattie43 · 23/04/2025 12:55

the question was ridiculous , just shows how desperate these men are .

Desperation personified.

Yep I think I would have laughed tbh and asked if the 2 babies I gave birth to were enough of a test.

What utter nonsense. I think it’s actually good though, the more ridiculous they make themselves look the more people will start questioning whether the feminists were right all along

I'm wondering how I would answer....Years of periods, endometriosis, 3 miscarriages and 4 uterine biopsies. I'm guessing that that might be enough.

Stupid question. My answer would be “years of periods and uterine fibroids”.

Rockhopper1 · 23/04/2025 13:13

Quite honestly I would be happy to do a cheek swab chromosome test & carry the results around with me if this is where we are atm . People with DSDs could have them too & indeed should have dispensation if they have a female DSD . It’s the XYs who shouldn’t be accessing women’s prisons / hospital wards / sports / taking female places on boards etc

Gettingbysomehow · 23/04/2025 13:14

Some fool on tiktok was trying to say that as people with downs syndrome have an extra chromosome you can't be sure about their sex. Morons are everywhere and now it seems they are disablist too.

It’s not about being embarrassed to say you’re female - it’s about how the question was used. The caller was making a valid point and instead of engaging with it, the guest flipped it back with a bizarre and demeaning question about her sex and whether she’d “been tested.” That’s not respectful debate - that’s deflection and intimidation. It’s uncomfortable not because women can’t say what sex they are, but because being challenged like that, out of nowhere and on national TV, is dehumanising and meant to put someone on the back foot.

Read back what you just wrote - yes, being challenged on your sex is demeaning and dehumanising. I imagine that was the point the trans woman on the radio was making.

user2848502016 · 23/04/2025 11:07

Well I’d say your friend was actually male so not a woman. Whether she should not be referred to as a woman, she/her and her presumably female name anymore, no I think that would just be unnecessarily cruel to someone who has already been through something traumatic. My personal view is that people with this sort of DSD should still be allowed to use the ladies toilet and changing rooms. They look female, haven’t gone through male puberty and are unlikely to be a threat to women. Nobody is likely to notice anyway. Saying that they’re biological women is inaccurate though.

It’s incredibly cruel to conflate issues facing those with DSD with trans issues….that persons friend IS a woman if they have androgen insensitivity as their body does not respond to male sex hormones and therefore they won’t have developed as a man and will have spent their whole life as a woman.

JasmineAllen · 23/04/2025 13:49

The caller should have just called his bluff and said yes, I've had a full profile done as part of genetic testing 😂

Helleofabore · 23/04/2025 14:12

Lovelysummerdays · 23/04/2025 10:29

I think though that opens the door to other questions are woman who don’t have children still…?

We need to stop allowing these people to control the rhetoric and getting bogged down in the crazy. The Supreme Court has clarified what they mean by biological woman. For most of us it’s just common sense.

It really is an activist trying to make those listening think that their claim to being a female is plausible.

It is really offensive on several aspects. It uses those with differences of sex development for political gain. Also female people with other health issue.

And yet there is this plea to remember that this group is marginalised.

That will happen when you're claiming to be a sex you're not. That's the difference.

The point being what?

That a male person with a philosophical belief that doesn't reflect material reality is asked questions about their sex for issues where sex matters?

There really is not comparison to be made here unless you somehow believe that a male person's philosophical belief about themselves should be treated as material reality regardless of whether it is materially real or not.

ScaryM0nster · 23/04/2025 10:37

The problem with these debates is that most of the points made work from a basic assumption that there are two, distinct, black and white categories. The testing done in elite sport clearly demonstrates that in reality things aren’t quite as simple as that.

That piece of education is missing for so many people.

So while, yes, it was a very direct question, in a debate program where the differentiations are a key part of the debate it doesn’t seem unreasonable.

There are two distinct black and white categories.
Male and female. Every human that has ever lived has been either male or female.

There are two black and white categories however.

For a tiny number of people, what category they are in may take a little extra investigation. But they will be in one or the other.

For the vast, vast majority of people there is no ambiguity at all.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 23/04/2025 14:32

Surely the answer should be "yes, my sex was confirmed at birth and has not changed". All babies are "tested" that way.

And I've not met a transwoman who could pass for a woman yet, I bet I'm not alone there.

NotSafeInTaxis · 23/04/2025 14:33

Seventree · 23/04/2025 10:40

It's a pretty weak argument but I guess there's some potential truth in it. I had a friend at uni who had presented biologically female from birth. After suffering from lots of pain and discomfort she ended up finding out she had some kind of chromosomal condition that meant she was biologically XY, despite having a vagina, growing breasts and being the average build for a woman.

In her case I'd say she's still a woman though... just with a rare biological condition. Completely different to someone who has gone through male puberty and has a penis so not really relevant in the trans debate 🤷‍♀️

Your friend is male.

Livpool · 23/04/2025 14:34

Well I gave birth after conceiving my son and carrying him in my uterus for 9 months. So I think I qualify as a ‘real female’

FriNightBlues · 23/04/2025 14:37

Somebody on the show clearly needs to be tested for something…

ScottishEggs · 23/04/2025 14:39

Brocsacoille · 23/04/2025 10:22

Exactly. Being female is obvious to 99% of the population. In fact include the animal kingdom in that too, my dog has no trouble recognising male or female…across species.

Stupid questions should receive the obvious answers, we don’t need to pander to people who set out to be deliberately obtuse.

Very true. We have had both a dog and a cat who had been abused by men who never got over their fear of men. Maybe they should have asked the random men they came across how they identified before running off and/or hiding under sofas.

GustyBaloo · 23/04/2025 14:40

Would you like to see my meno clots? Ask paramedics that were sent last week worried I might need a transfusion. Ask the phlebotomist that took my blood relating to my hormonal haemorrhaging.

I'll happily swap all that shit!

Fucking wise up guys, being a woman isn't exactly a walk in the park in a nice frock and heels.
