To just want nice toilets

Honestly - toilets should all be unisex and completely self contained (floor to ceiling) , lockable with a wash basin in there, a hook for bags and room for a toddler and lots of loo paper.
With glass doors for the entry into the toilet area.
Then all this worry about who else is using them would stop.

I don’t get why the men’s toilets stink so badly
we had temporary toilets at work, one for men, one for women. The men’s toilet stinks of urine despite being cleaned the same as the women’s. Are they all dehydrated?!

Ideally completely separate. Although, if we have to have omnisex loos then a separate big cubicle with urinals in could potentially mitigate some of the issues raised.

If there’s not enough room for completely separate then I’d go for single sex individual toilets with sinks inside.

Basically starting point should always be women have single sex.

Perhaps stretch your imagination to several urinals behind one door.

OK, so sex segregated toilets after all then..... doh.

No thanks.
I want cloakrooms like the ones you find in nice hotels. The sign says 'Women' and there's a pleasant room with basins and tissues and a couple of chairs and stalls off that. You cand send the men to their own toilet, thank you very much.

minnienono · 23/04/2025 15:03

around half the public toilets here are unisex and all are kept clean. I’m not sure where these dirty ones are, are men filthier elsewhere?

Exactly, same here, I don't get it either.

Unisex is a misnomer.

Breadcat24 · 23/04/2025 15:22

We have unisex single room off corridor disabled access toilets at work. The amount of people who do not flush, or leave it looking like their backside has exploded has been shocking to me

lemmein · 23/04/2025 16:39

Women have been raped on trains in full view of other passengers -I don’t think we should ever concede, in any shape or form on single-sex spaces.

Besides, it’s about much, much more than access to toilets.

I agree, it is so weird how the people who don't see the need for single sex provisions are also the people who never encounter grubby unisex facilities.

I guess that is why they don't see the problem, because it's not something they personally have experienced.

Once upon a time I was a commercial cleaner, including staff toilets. The men's and ladies toilets were cleaned exactly the same - i know because I cleaned them.

These men were not especially dirtier than the women - no pools of pee or shit smears - but their toilets at the end of the working day were still grubbier and smellier, partly because men's pee naturally smells different and to my nose at least, pretty unpleasant, and partly because the pee gets into the hinges which doesn't happen in the ladies.

So yeah, given two sets of semi public (office) toilets cleaned to exactly the same standard and used by what seemed to be roughly equally considerate people, the women's were still objectively more pleasant spaces than the men's, so women losing those woman-only facilities in favour of unisex would have had a small but noticeable part of day-to-day life degraded in a small but noticeable way.

@Tessiebear2023why do you want to share facilities with men?

ErrolTheDragon · 23/04/2025 17:09

YABU.
there should be single sex loos plus some mixed sex ones.
mixed sex loos are useful for parents and children, they’re definitely needed, but they need to be properly designed.

ShouldIEvenBother · 23/04/2025 17:10

A higher percentage of men than women do not clean their hands after using the toilet, this includes after they have had a poo. I can't stand having to put the urine caked seat down either. On this alone it's a no from me. Plus, what everyone else has said!

Thistooshallpass. · 23/04/2025 17:22

I don’t want to share toilets with men . Hygiene and safety reasons .

@Tessiebear2023why do you want to share facilities with men?

In the place that work all toilets are unisex. If I need the loo I just go to the nearest facility.

In the town that I live the council had to get rid of the public toilet blocks because they attracted anti social behaviour, were unsafe, dirty (yes, even the ladies was bloody minging), and kept getting vandalised. They got replaced with individual unisex units, which are so much safer and cleaner.

It's not a case of wanting to share with men, I just don't mind sharing facilities if the end result is better, safer and more convenient.

If a man is capable of raping a woman on a crowded train, how are you safer in a public ladies toilet block? Do rapists combust when they attempt to cross the threshold, seriously how are you safer?

I'd rather be in the individual unisex loo thanks, away from the junkies and loiterers.

EasternStandard · 23/04/2025 18:24

There are no junkies and loiterers in my gym toilets.

None anywhere really. But the unisex Sainsbury’s loo is an abomination.

Just let us have some cubicles and sinks segregated from men. It’s not hard.

If a man enters a female toilet in somewhere like a shopping mall he can be reported and removed.

It’s about lowering risk, not eradicating it - unfortunately. We don’t just forget about safeguards because some flout the law anyway.

If good men respect the law and single-sex spaces then the predatory fuckers amongst them will be easier to spot.

Actually I thought this theory that men are dirtier has been proven wrong, both women's hands, and desks have been found to be germier when tested. Women may say that they wash their hands more, but not by the state of the fingernails I've seen 🤮

And as for urine caked seats, I work for an organisation with only unisex toilets and I can honestly say I have never had to touch a toilet seat, or seen anything 'caked in urine'. Same for the unisex public toilets in my town. Where on earth do you live that the toilets are so bad?

Well, another quick Google search tells me very clearly that women have cleaner hands and wash their hands more frequently - and use soap. The last office I worked in was before the pandemic. I am WFH now, and that last office was in London. There was a male member of staff defecating and smearing (protest poo I suppose you could call it) in the gents. On another occasion, ejaculate was left on one of the unisex toilet seats (there were 2 unisex, and a block of women and a block of gents toilets). As I'm sure you can imagine, this didn't go down too well with HR.

I have lived in various parts of the UK and, like most people, have visited different parts of the UK. Whilst women's public toilets can sometimes be less hygenic than I would like, any unisex toilets I've ever used have stunk of piss - and generally been far less clean.

Single sex all the way is my preference, I'm afraid!

Strange, that's not the result I got with a Google search, women have more germs on their hands apparently. They may say that they clean more, but the tests don't seem to uphold that.

I wish I could show you to the unisex loos around where I live and work, I've never witnessed anything like you've just described. But the main thing is, they are absolutely safe.

Walked into the men’s loo by accident at an NT place. It absolutely stank and there was pee on the seats.

We have mixed sex toilets at work. It's shit sharing with blokes.

What's with the handprints on the wall above the toilet? Do men lean and dangle?

They get cleaned off but come back.

We once viewed a house where a man lived on his own and there was a grubby handprint above the toilet. DH explained what it was 🤢
