This amount of Easter eggs

To get straight into it - I get my children 10 Easter eggs each every Easter .

When I started it years ago , it was very cheap. I don’t get the huge ones . Years ago I could get one or 2 big ( the ones that are now medium ) and then the little ones ( they had more packaging and more in them ) and I would spend £20.

It all stems from my son’s autism , he is a young adult now. I’ve always said that birthday and Christmas is at least 10 presents and 10 eggs at Easter . It’s usually more at Christmas but it has became a security thing - he knows he’s getting at least 10 presents ( he does not care about the price , he’s not spoiled . I could get his main present and then 9 things from the pound shop ) .

I have had comments about it being too much . I don’t get gifts and balloon arches or anything like that. My youngest never eats them all , he barely touches them and we eat a lot of them 🤣 but I can’t get him less. Usually at the end of half term we melt the uneaten eggs and make cakes - so that’s an activity for a day of the holidays - , the uneaten chocolates all end up in a box for anyone to have.

For info - this is what I spent.

I got 2 of the “ 2 for £9” eggs , the bigger ones. So they have one each of those. Usually I get some medium and some small but as the small were £1.50 ( and I left it late so couldn’t find any anyway) but the medium were £2.30 in Asda I didn’t bother with the small. So I then got 4 for £12 ( 2 each ) then they had 7 each of the £2.30 ones . I spent £53 in total , so £26.50 each . Usually it’s less as I grab the smaller ones when they’re on offer in Morrisons , it just happened that I left it late this year.

Yes, it’s a lot on chocolate . But I see people getting hampers and balloons etc .

Is this really over the top ?

10 eggs would be too much for my children so I don't buy them 10 eggs.

I don't feel the need to judge you though - your children are not my children. You are buying 10 eggs for your children as part of doing your best as a parent to keep them calm, happy and (counter-intuitively) healthy.

One of my children is a selective eater. For them, fish fingers are a "healthy" food option. So they get fish fingers much more often than other kids would necessarily and I'm sure people would judge me for that. I don't care, they're not trying to parent a child with sensory issues and a limited diet.

As long as they are Easter eggs in boxes , yes I can .

the unopened ones we melt and make cakes. The nibbled ones do get thrown away , yes . But that waste is worth it for the calm it brings him .

Ok, I know it can be difficult but next year try and get them when they are reduced. It is a pity you didn't post on Saturday and I could have told you Asda had reduced most of their eggs. The wee chocolate buttons were about 90p so you could have saved yourself a fair bit 😊

Whattodo1610 · 22/04/2025 12:28

I’m not sure what you want from this OP. Your child is autistic, you do what is right for them, end of 🤷‍♀️

Extiainoiapeial · 22/04/2025 12:29

Gobsmacked at the amount of eggs some kids get! (Not the OP, she has reasons for doing this, but perhaps one day the 10 eggs might have to change!)
Mine used to get an egg from us, and sometimes we did an easter egg hunt in the garden with little eggs. That's it!
I don't think they suffered.

Plantatreetoday · 22/04/2025 12:29

Why not get one of those packs of smal Easter Hunt eggs if they must have ten.

If he’s not worried about the price then it’s all about the number
I packet of EH eggs is not expensive in Aldi and Lidl

Pinkbleach · 22/04/2025 12:30

Strictlymad · 22/04/2025 12:22

But you said you melt uneaten ones to make cakes - so you are making cakes with 50 quid of chocolate. Each to their own but I don’t see that as good value

Value doesn’t really come into it .

Yes , it’s a lot to spend . But there is also a lot that I don’t spend / haven’t spent over the years - outings with friends , school trips abroad etc . He can’t / couldn’t do this . Going to Easter parties , visiting places at Easter etc .

I have to watch him look at the world from the outside and being unable to access it in the same way as others his age . I look at friends with children the same age and they’re buying them their first car , or driving lessons , or they’re going out clubbing with their friends , going travelling , going on holidays and weekends away with their friends . So I don’t care if I’m throwing chocolate away .

Because the eggs have to be in boxes, the OP said! 😲

I just don’t see the point in buying kids more chocolate than they can physically eat.

I get my kids baskets with little eggs, chocolate bunnies, spring themed pjs, books, soft toys, stickers etc. I don’t really care whether someone thinks that’s over the top or not, I much prefer carefully selected things I know they will like and play with than a mountain of chocolate.

Each to his own I say. Frankly I don't get the need for baskets. Just more landfill

Have you tried to find a job lot ( thinking of the future here ) of small boxes. You could package them up yourself. I appreciate I’m coming across as a little mad here.
Just trying to think a solution through here.

Oh OP, I know exactly what you're dealing with here - and I wouldn't worry a bit about doing this if it works. I find myself doing all sorts of things for my child that I'd never have imagined I'd have to do as a parent - it just comes with the territory. And there's nothing nicer than cornflake crispies with leftover chocolate!

IceColdChardonayPls · 22/04/2025 12:36

It probably is “too much” but I did it as well.

Partly, I also left it too late and couldn’t get the small ones I wanted to do an egg hunt. So I panic bought what I could (£34 between two kids, yes, too much).

Partly, my kids don’t have much family so I tend to try and compensate this by getting them lots so they don’t notice.

As it turned out, some family we don’t see much crawled out the woodwork and also got them eggs.

so they very much did end up with too much.

However, it’s just chocolate. It’s not gifts and tat that’s going to end up in landfill.

they will eat it a bit at a time over the coming weeks, and I like your idea of melting down to make cakes.

ThatMrsM · 22/04/2025 12:37

How old is your youngest, is he old enough to understand why you always buy 10 eggs each? If he doesn't really eat much chocolate anyway wouldn't he prefer a different gift/money to spend on what he likes?

RedXTart · 22/04/2025 12:37

One of the most stupid foods I’ve read on MN my fault for looking!

Autistic or not, who starts after giving their children 10 chocolate eggs for Easter? Ridiculous. No wonder people are so fat in this country. (that is not a dig at fat people by the way, who have many reasons for being fat that is out of their control, one of them being giving loads of crap food when they were children by ignorant and indulgent parents)

Maybe you should read the whole thing before commenting .

He does not eat all 10 .

Starting with “ autistic or not” made me not even want to read the rest of your post

Yes I do think from next year this will be the case . He is getting to an age now that he understands more

That's an awful lot of chocolate.

I diidn't get any eggs this year as they so expensive but did buy some small ones for Easter egg hunting from lidl..the ones in little bags. Just been into tesco and lots of large and small Easter eggs left and everyone looking at them. Some like me said they not had an Easter eggs this year. Very few were taking them as even half price they were still very expensive.

Trickabrick · 22/04/2025 12:42

I think it’s fine, it sounds like a nice tradition and it’s not like you’re giving him that much chocolate every week!

My kids get amounts of chocolate at Easter (and similar at Christmas) that would horrify lots on here, but I let them gorge themselves and we return to normal levels of sugar for the rest of the year. No weight, teeth or eating issues so far 🙂

I did read the OP’s original post. She said and I quote :

“I’ve always said that birthday and Christmas is at least 10 presents and 10 eggs at Easter”.

Why did she had to say that? whether her child is autistic or not is irrelevant. She didn’t have to say that. So it’s all on her, even if that’s the inconvenient truth. She has set up the problem herself, whether he eats them or not. The fat/health problem was more directed at people generally who just stuffed their kids with all of this crap. Like I said, ridiculous post, buying 10 Easter eggs for a child who may or may not either.

RaspberryBeretxx · 22/04/2025 12:44

YANBU. I think it's great you've found a way to regulate a stressful experience for your DS so he can enjoy Christmas/Easter/Birthdays etc. It's 10 not 100 and within your budget and not like he's eating them all in one go and getting sick. It wouldn't work for all DC/families but it does for you so I'd crack on.

It's quite easy to fall down these rabbit holes with kids and hard to extricate yourself (and them) once you're in them. All it takes is going through a tough patch where you're under pressure from all angles and you give in a few times, and suddenly you have a whole host of new bad habits to deal with.

Because it was a number that I had said about presents. I said that number because it’s an average of what I get . So I said the same with eggs. Growing up I used to get around that so to me that was normal . I remember at that time , others used to get the same I never saw it as extravagant . I had to say a number to prepare him.

You talk as though I am stuck with this huge problem. It is not a problem to me. I am not asking for advice on how to stop it . I asked if people think it’s extravagant , because I don’t think it is compared to what some spend . The general consensus is that it is. That’s fine. I’m not going to change what I do because of it I was just interested in the thoughts of others.
