This amount of Easter eggs

To get straight into it - I get my children 10 Easter eggs each every Easter .

When I started it years ago , it was very cheap. I don’t get the huge ones . Years ago I could get one or 2 big ( the ones that are now medium ) and then the little ones ( they had more packaging and more in them ) and I would spend £20.

It all stems from my son’s autism , he is a young adult now. I’ve always said that birthday and Christmas is at least 10 presents and 10 eggs at Easter . It’s usually more at Christmas but it has became a security thing - he knows he’s getting at least 10 presents ( he does not care about the price , he’s not spoiled . I could get his main present and then 9 things from the pound shop ) .

I have had comments about it being too much . I don’t get gifts and balloon arches or anything like that. My youngest never eats them all , he barely touches them and we eat a lot of them 🤣 but I can’t get him less. Usually at the end of half term we melt the uneaten eggs and make cakes - so that’s an activity for a day of the holidays - , the uneaten chocolates all end up in a box for anyone to have.

For info - this is what I spent.

I got 2 of the “ 2 for £9” eggs , the bigger ones. So they have one each of those. Usually I get some medium and some small but as the small were £1.50 ( and I left it late so couldn’t find any anyway) but the medium were £2.30 in Asda I didn’t bother with the small. So I then got 4 for £12 ( 2 each ) then they had 7 each of the £2.30 ones . I spent £53 in total , so £26.50 each . Usually it’s less as I grab the smaller ones when they’re on offer in Morrisons , it just happened that I left it late this year.

Yes, it’s a lot on chocolate . But I see people getting hampers and balloons etc .

Is this really over the top ?

I don’t think you should worry OP. It’s just chocolate and it keeps your son calm.

next time I’d go for those little Cadbury eggs that are about £2 - the Easter egg ones but the smallest boxes you can get like dairy milk caramel or mini egg.

mine got about 7 each and it is a lot but they’ll eat them over the next few months and we’ll all survive and my children won’t turn into enormous ungrateful brats with no teeth.

do what works for you and your family and don’t worry about it

Gently, this is a ridiculous amount to spend, especially when you're paying for the chocolate to be in an egg shape and then melting it down anyway!

£53 on overpriced poor quality chocolate in a novelty shape is a waste whereas £53 on a hamper might well not be. My daughter got 1 egg, and her Easter basket had things like craft activities, a kite, and outdoor toys which will keep her occupied for months and encourage her to go outside, rather than just a vast mountain of chocolate she can't eat and I wouldn't want her to eat if she could.

If your oldest needs 10 eggs then you can get 10 eggs for a lot less. You can get Creme, Lindt or Kinder eggs that are the size of an actual egg, and they might have half a chance of getting eaten. Your youngest clearly doesn't need 10 eggs and it sounds like it's more about a compulsion that you have rather than the children.

The little eggs aren’t Easter eggs though and that’s how he sees it .

I could get a hamper - but it would be meaningless to him . He’s a young adult , he doesn’t do arts and crafts etc . So that would t get used either. So either way , I would be spending the same and not everything being used but getting the eggs keeps him calm and happy . It’s not even about money to me , it’s his well being.

My youngest absolutely doesn’t need 10 eggs . He also wouldn’t use a hamper . I get him 10, because as a sibling of an autistic person he does suffer in a way. We have to work around his needs , so I do not want him coming down to 3 eggs ( the amount he would probably eat max ) whilst there is a pile of 10 for his brother. I do think as he gets older I’ll probably just give him the choice - does he want all those eggs , or would he like a small amount of cash instead etc .

Usually I do , but the bigger ones were £2.30 anyway and it saved me going around multiple shops

I think it all sounds ridiculous but if the kid needs 10 eggs he'd be getting 9 Cadburys creme eggs and one large egg. Are both DC autistic?

Pinkbleach · 22/04/2025 12:11

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 22/04/2025 11:46

My word, no wonder child obesity is so high.

He doesn’t eat them all.

I know of an autistic person who has to have 3 crates of bottled pop ( not cans , and a specific sized bottle ) in her room at any time. She asks for new ones as birthday and Christmas presents ) . She does not drink any fizzy pop .

Try reading OPs posts as she explains why this wouldn’t work.

No just my eldest .

crème eggs aren’t Easter eggs .

There isn’t a massive difference in price for a crime egg or a small Easter egg . In fact if you get them in the sale , they’re the same price .

OP I voted YABU but honestly thinking about it I would definitely buy this many eggs if it would prevent a meltdown for an autistic child.

Thank you . That’s what it is . It’s more than just having an obscene amount of chocolate

Obviously it's a lot but you're not buying them for the same reason as most others - to give to eat - you're doing it to fulfil a (rather arbitrary! ) promise you made when he was small, and presumably that still matters to him.

If you can afford it then it's not really an issue.

As he gets older I wonder if you could include "and we give to 10 charities/food bank items" as well? (If you can afford £1 to 10 places etc! ) Not scolding or judging or anything, just might be a nice thing to introduce. Or 10 things to charity shop.

Saying that you are donating to charities etc is kind of virtue signalling in my view. If the child is empathetic ( not usually a characteristic of small children) then fine. We've spent ridiculous amounts of small items I thought the children would like at Christmas, and veritable mountains of eggs for a gimormous hunt at Easter. As the children have grown up our pressies now are more financial, but less in total as we give to chariities more. My DH decided to give this as a reason when I was not looking to give an explanation. What good did it serve? What could they say?

DidYouEverGoBack · 22/04/2025 12:13

OP, I think you need to look at the reasons why you feel the need to justify yourself, because you really don’t have to.

Whatever you do in life, someone will judge, you will never please everyone so just please yourself and your loved ones.

ShortColdandGrey · 22/04/2025 12:14

I have to admit I went a bit OTT this year but it was due to me being a bit too organised. I kept picking up eggs while they were reduced and forgot I had already bought some. I kept finding wee bags of eggs on Sunday morning. So the egg hunt was fun. My daughter asked if the Easter Bunny thought it was Christmas. My husband restocked his treat box and my chocoholic brother went home with a great stash of eggs 😂I found a box of 5 cream eggs last night and I hope that is the last of them haha

Pinkbleach · 22/04/2025 12:14

Cucy · 22/04/2025 11:43

I think 10 Easter eggs is absolutely madness.

It’s way too much chocolate (I say that as an chocoholic) and you’re paying through the nose for something that is so commercial.

I can’t imagine having 10 eggs lined up, it must look like Christmas or something.

I would definitely find ways to reduce this number.
I’m not sure why you set this rule anyway as of course it’s going to be hard to break for anyone, let alone for an autistic person.

If you’re happy to continue this then carry on but I do think it’s one of the maddest things I’ve read on here lol.

One of the maddest things ? Really ?

What’s the point of the post though? You don’t actually want opinions on whether it’s reasonable or unreasonable. You’re happy with your decision so what’s the goal here?

ThisIsItNowOrNever · 22/04/2025 12:16

10 eggs? Absolutely insane. Do you want to give diabetes on your son? His blood sugar is literally going through the roof.
You must start looking into other alternatives. Have you tried to speak with him ? I understand that it can be a challenge but at some point he needs to understand that healthy eating is necessary.

As I have said quite a lot - he does not eat them all .

To see if it was extravagant . The general consensus is that it is .

I wasn’t asking for advice if to stop.

I get about the same for my DC. They are still eating their way through them for about 2 months. YANBU

As I have said quite a lot - he does not eat them all .

So what happens to them? If they just get chucked after he has nibbled it then that is a lot of waste. Can you not just buy him 10 small eggs that will get eaten even if it is over a good few weeks?

Cucy · 22/04/2025 12:20

Pinkbleach · 22/04/2025 11:53

I am interested - it seems it is extravagant. I’m not going to change what I do , that wasn’t the point of the post . But maybe it will stop me being defensive if people tell me it’s extravagant .

I just wouldn’t tell people.

No one has ever asked me how many eggs I get for my DC and as most people don’t have a set number, it differs and so it’s not a question people tend to ask.

You know it’s not the norm which is why you get judgement in real life and so if you don’t want your parenting judged, just simply don’t tell people.

I think you’ve made a rod for your own back and this is something you can change if you wanted to but none of us are perfect parents and if this makes your life easier and you don’t want to change anything then just carry on.

I usually do , but I left it late this year so I couldn’t . But , to be honest - chocolate wise - there isn’t much difference .

But you said you melt uneaten ones to make cakes - so you are making cakes with 50 quid of chocolate. Each to their own but I don’t see that as good value

As long as they are Easter eggs in boxes , yes I can .

the unopened ones we melt and make cakes. The nibbled ones do get thrown away , yes . But that waste is worth it for the calm it brings him .
