To be irritated with all the USA themed clothing?

Why can’t you get a plain hoodie or tshirt any more? They’re all emblazoned with New York, Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Arizona etc.

I can see buying one if you’re in that state on holiday, but why are they being sold everywhere in the UK? Are they selling them with Blackpool, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast on them in the US?

You see Paris or Milan ones too but the states dominate. Why are clothing manufacturers doing this? And why are people buying them? Let us have plain clothes please!

Yep, I wouldn’t buy one that’s for sure! It made me laugh the thought of Americans wearing a Blackpool hoodie!

Needmorelego · 21/04/2025 22:57

I do find it odd.
Primark also had a bunch of American University hoodies. Why would you want to wear a top that says "Harvard" on if you've never been there?

Exactly! It’s very odd. Presumably they’re selling though if they keep making them but why would you want one?

I have a few of these plus a Paris one, I wear them because I love sweatshirts but absolutely hate plain ones. I wear them in the house and they are part of my comfort cinema capsule.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/04/2025 23:03

wonder if they’re made in China and were intended to be sold in the US but being dumped on the U.K.? I can’t imagine why you’d buy a garment with a random placename on it.

Haha, I imagine the Harvard one is for social status. Although they're sold in masses, who knows maybe you are one of the few who actually went to Harvard 🤣 Same as the NYC and LA ones, maybe you'd been to these flashy locations living the Dream!

ThisIsItNowOrNever · 21/04/2025 23:04

I'm with you. Hideous clothes.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 21/04/2025 23:05

Maybe someone unearthed some old stock from the 90’s and thought they’d give it a go to unload it.

I’m assuming these are university sweatshirts and hoodies.

Although when I did an image search for this post I giggled when I tripped over this one.

I don’t even notice what’s written on mine, if the colour suits me, it’s the right length, feels comfy and goes with my bottom halves then I’ll buy it. I don’t think a £6 sweatshirt is something to overthink.

henlake7 · 21/04/2025 23:06

Those Primark ones really do irritate me. I can see having maybe a couple with New York or Nevado on for instance but a whole expensive range of American university's and football teams?
Waste of space in the store.....they could be making nicer and cheaper versions.

Primark (and other retailers) has sold them for years (on and off).
I doubt they are unwanted chinese products.

Emoleno · 21/04/2025 23:09

I agree, op.
They're just so stupid-looking.

BlueLoris · 21/04/2025 23:11

I always found it irritating but now it’s even worse. why would you want to wear anything that affiliates you with that country?

Is having gone to Harvard (or Yale) a status thing in the UK.
I mean I know they are fancy universities in America. I'm not sure exactly where they are without looking it up.

mathanxiety · 21/04/2025 23:12

You don't have to buy them if they're not to your taste.

There's clearly a market for them if they keep on stocking them, so somebody must like them.

How can you "not notice" a giant logo that says "New York" or "Yale" on it.
(see that photo above ^ - you really don't notice that?)

Social status? Wearing the name or logo of a uni you haven’t been to is naff in the extreme, I doubt they fool anyone.

FKAT · 21/04/2025 23:15

Yes you're right. It's physically impossible to buy any t-shirt that doesn't have the name of an Ivy League university on the front. I believe it's now illegal in fact. Fewmin'.

hereismydog · 21/04/2025 23:15

I have a jumper with the name of a US state on it that DP got me for Christmas because it has a funny/sentimental meaning to us. I had a lot of interventions during my induction and kept begging the midwife to stop when I didn’t mean it, so she stopped and things weren’t progressing. I suggested we use a ‘safe word’ so she would know she still had my consent even if I was making a terrible fuss. She asked me what word I wanted to use when I’d just taken a big old huff on the gas and air, and I blurted out the name of a random US state I’ve never been to and have no connection with Grin

Other than that, I wouldn’t buy one! Hi midwife, if you happen to read this 🤭

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/04/2025 23:16

It’s been around for ages but I’d never wear it.

Needmorelego · 21/04/2025 23:16

@mathanxiety you live in America don't you?
Can you tell us - does Walmart or Target sell hoodies with "London" or "Yorkshire" printed on? We need to know 😂😂😂

What's a comfort cinema capsule? (Never heard of this phrase before).

Yes agree in general, unlikely you'd get Americans wearing English football team shirts, or names of universities other than Oxford or Cambridge.

Meadowfinch · 21/04/2025 23:18

There are plenty of plain sweatshirts & hoodies around. I don't see the problem.

Just choose something else.

You have to tell us which state it was! 😂

Emoleno · 21/04/2025 23:19

"Comfort cinema capsule" sounds like pretentious twaddle for 'slobbing around gear'.
