To wonder who is buying chocolate cereal

Who om each is buying Lion bar and Oreo cereal? See also lucky charms, nesquick and coco pops
These aren't breakfast foods (or any sort of food). I literally cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a reasonable way of feeding children?

I usually have lucky charms in and have a bowl most weeks. Rarely for breakfast, usually as a sweet treat mid afternoon.

In fact I eat a lot of cereal. Very rarely before lunch time though, I eat as a snack or for lunch mostly.

HeartyViper · 21/04/2025 20:47

Bloody love coco pops and buy them for me. Kids occasionally have it as a treat.
Live and let live, and be concerned about what’s in your own bowl.

Minieggcookies · 21/04/2025 20:50

Mumsnet can’t be a funny place.

Op - give my kids chocolate cereal = whole of mumsnet - you are a terrible parent, sugar is the work of the devil, my children only eat protein and organic oats or homemade sugar free muffins.

Op - who is buying the sugary cereal = whole of mumsnet - you judgemental arsehole, my kids love sugary cereal and are perfectly fine and healthy, it’s a perfectly adequate breakfast.

WeHaveTheRabbit · 21/04/2025 20:51

My absolute favourite threads on MN are the ones about what to eat/not to eat. Even better when they are about what to feed children. Happy sigh. 😅

Zimunya · 21/04/2025 20:51

No scientific evidence whatsoever that breakfast is either important or necessary. As other posters have said, plenty of people eat cereal as dessert. It’s not only a breakfast food.

gohomeroger1 · 21/04/2025 20:52

Christian Horner loves a bowl of coco pops iykyk

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 21/04/2025 20:54

People who like chocolate cereal I guess

I’d imagine many of them also eat avocado and work as lawyers and do cross county ski ing.

We are all of more than one small life choice

I know a upper-crust (by her connections at least!) mother who once told me she thought venison and partridge were 'very important for children'!

I think trying different foods is important.

2 minutes, that’s less than I thought.

So the second option @Eminybob 🙄

Yeah this. Funny that isn't it? 😆 If the OP had said they give their child chocolate cereal for breakfast, the majority of the responses would have been 'that's terrible parenting OP. Your children will end up obese by the time they're teenagers, shame on you!' 😂 But because the OP is berating chocolate cereal, multiple dozens of posters have dropped by to say chocolate cereal is wonderful and perfect, and it's absolutely fine to give it to your children! 😆

This place sometimes! 😬

Totally agree. No wonder everyone is so fat.

Bellyblueboy · 21/04/2025 20:56

😂 yes you are better than all of us.

i remember camping holidays when we got the mini cereal boxes! We weren’t allowed sugary cereal normally but i loved coco pops and those honey monster ones!!

everything in moderation OP. Kids should get treats.

Hoppinggreen · 21/04/2025 20:58

I REALLY want Coco Pops now

Lovelysummerdays · 21/04/2025 20:58

I buy Aldi coco pops and the odd bag of chocolate granola. Honestly mainly eat eggs for breakfast and home made flapjacks but sometimes there is no time so cereal it is. Everything in moderation!

Blueyseviltwin · 21/04/2025 19:20

A pulled pork, salad snd wedges,

Jacket potatoes

Curry/ chilli

@Blueyseviltwin You would be horrified at my mother with her tinned spaghetti Bolognese, crispy pancakes and beans, tinned ravioli and ready brek with more sugar than the local Tesco and party rings for breakfast! Not that I feed my kids anything like that. As long as kids are fed brush their teeth and have a healthy balanced diet it's shouldn't matter to you!

Kids have coco pops as a treat at weekend. I sometimes have crunchy nut as a dessert. Yum

Me too. Can't stand normal cornflakes but crunchy nut are great.

Xwx1010 · 21/04/2025 21:00

Fuck me, I wish I had the headspace, time and fortune to even consider such a non issue such as this.

intrepidpanda · 21/04/2025 21:01

You could say that about a lot of things

Who the hell is buying baked beans, too much sugar for kids
Who the hell is buying crisps. Too much salt for kids
McDonald's/ pizza - what are you thinking !!!!!
And wo the hell gives kids a sanddwich. Bread is sooo bad.
And why does anywhere sell wine. Nobody should be drinking that.

maowmaow · 21/04/2025 21:02

You’re not wrong OP, they are ultra processed shit in a box. I am Judgey McJudging everyone who buys these Grin

Well that covered a lot of our regular options 🫣😅

they do also regularly eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and home cooked meals.
Moderation is key, and that definitely includes wine. For me, not the kids.. for clarity 🙈

Your second paragraph would be quite confusing in French as "avocado" and "lawyer" are both "l'avocat".

Really mixed feelings about this thread. On the one hand I can see why people feel OP raised the subject in quite a combative or judgmental way. Based on what she says about how she feeds her children I think it’s probably also true that she is blessed with children who are relatively adventurous when it comes to food, because if she had to feed mine I think she would find she needed to be a little more flexible. Kids cart really widely, studies show that pickiness in eating is chiefly genetic with nurture only a minor component, and the same approach with different children accordingly yields very different results. I’m also conscious that people on a tight budget cannot afford to take risks with foods their kids may not eat, or that may just moulder in the fridge. And not everyone has had the time or the education to acquaint themselves thoroughly with the teachings of Chris Van Tulleken.
On the other hand, I see a LOT of middle class mum shaming in this thread, and I find that sad. As someone who skimps and saves on most other things to afford better quality food for her kids I have definitely had eyes rolled at me for serving things like home made salmon fish fingers and the like to my variety-averse offspring. It’s not in itself elitist or snobby to care about what we feed our kids, or even to be concerned that the dental and metabolic health of children in this country generally have been deteriorating over the last few decades because the food industry effectively subsidises poor quality, highly processed food. It’s unhelpful to sneer at people for letting their children eat sugary breakfast cereal when they might very well have their reasons beyond simply not caring about diet but it’s hardly useful to mock people for trying their hardest to feed their kids without including less healthy options either.

I wish this site would make its mind up on the sole reason for childhood obesity. Last week it was MacDonalds, this week it’s Coco Pops.

intrepidpanda · 21/04/2025 21:04

I'm guessing OP has just read ultra processed people and is on a low UPF drive that will be out the window in 6 months time.

ICantBeDoingWithThat · 21/04/2025 21:05

I accidentally bought chocolate chip granola from Morrisons, and well, it's delicious! Got to use it up, right? 😋
