Who om each is buying Lion bar and Oreo cereal? See also lucky charms, nesquick and coco pops
These aren't breakfast foods (or any sort of food). I literally cannot imagine anyone thinking it is a reasonable way of feeding children?

If I offered my DD pork or kids pizzas, she'd choose the pork.

After her swimming lessons, her class all go to the cafe for a treat afterwards. She can choose whatever she likes, she's just been swimming, I'm not restrictive around foods. She always picks fruit, even when the rest of her class are choosing cupcakes or brownies. She also doesn't like potatoes so she won't eat chips.

I mostly cook from scratch because I have allergies. But she's absolutely allowed sweets, cereal, chocolate, beige food. She just tends to choose the "real" food more.

Kids like that exist. People who don't feed them loads of rubbish exist.

The difference is, most of us don't actually use it as a stick to beat other parents with. I firmly believe that making sure children are fed is the most important thing. Doesn't matter so much whether that's whole foods or chicken nuggets, as long as they have full tummies. The rest can follow on as and when you can get it in them.

i agree. Some children are like that. My nieces are polar opposite, one shuns sweet and junk food for olives, seafood and Mediterranean type foods. The other will only eat beige food.
same parents, same parenting. It’s just how they are

Neglect 🤣 You must have led a charmed life if you genuinely class this as neglect. If you spent a week working as a children's social worker you might just understand what neglect actually is.

Yes neglect. If people constantly feed their kids crap then it is neglect. I'm not talking about weekend treats or holidays. And I'm surprised working within CSC you can't see that and it's unfortunate you find it funny.

My dh often has some sort of chocolate cereal, usually as dinner after a late shift.
His favourite cereal is either coco pops or bran flakes, I don’t think there is anything wrong with adults eating that kind of cereal in moderation, as part of a balanced healthy diet.

please unclench….

It may have been marketed that way but the fact that chocolate/sugar covered cereal isn't healthy isn’t that mind blowing!

No it’s not mind blowing. But it was in reply to the post about it not being seen as healthy in the 80’s and 90’s. When, it was marketed as a healthy vitamin & mineral packed breakfast

CookingFatCat · 21/04/2025 20:34

Not for every day, but my daughter loves chocolate shreddies.
I love chocolate Weetabix with warm milk. Admittedly it is more like a pudding.
I like it when under the weather and can’t be bothered to cook.

RedHelenB · 21/04/2025 19:11

As a child we put sugar on porridge, weetabix, shredded wheat, cornflakes etc. So not that different

I've just had a flashback to when I was a kid - I'd have two Weetabix in a bowl and put a layer of sugar on top. Then as you got to the bottom of the bowl there would be a load of sugary milk to slurp up. Lovely.

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 21/04/2025 20:34

I do for DD . At least she’s eating.

She went on a trip to Italy with the school recently (secondary) and the teachers were so concerned about her eating(or lack of) that they actually emailed me. She was having no breakfast(despite cereal and croissants and pain au chocolat being on offer) and only bread and pineapple for dinner. They went for pizzas and she had a few chips.Lost 2 kgs.

She also won’t drink fizzy drinks or eat things like cold meats (of any type), sausage rolls, pizzas , only certain chicken nuggets will do and so on. Hell even chips aren’t all the same. So most convenience and crap food is out. Most healthy foods are also out.

Like I said, at least she’s eating, perfectly well behaved , high achieving and a perfectly healthy weight.

@Blueyseviltwin You lost me at the mention of venison. 😅

I know a upper-crust (by her connections at least!) mother who once told me she thought venison and partridge were 'very important for children'!

mummysmagicmedicine · 21/04/2025 20:35

We have weekend cereal in my house, each child gets to pick a cereal on Friday after school as a treat. I will always offer fresh fruit and Greek yoghurt on the side too which most of the time they will have too or sometimes just the cereal or just the yoghurt! Choice is theirs.

GettingMySpringOn · 21/04/2025 20:36

My dcs occasionally like krave cereal. See also coco pops .
They don't like porridge or weetabix. Nor anything egg ( allergy) so they usually have shreddies or Cornflakes or a sweet cereal. And fruit. They're just fine

I’d suggest gently that if you think a diet of coco pops for breakfast is neglect you have led a sheltered life and need to take a bigger interest in the world.

Are kids not allowed treats? Must they only eat healthy things all the time?

Kids are allowed treats, well OP lets her kids have ice cream, chocolates etc which seems to be ok but parents letting their children have a cereal whether it’s for breakfast or a snack is not ok. Sounds pretty judgemental and hypocritical to me

shortsharp · 21/04/2025 20:36

BendingSpoons · 21/04/2025 20:30

I might have had breakfast dessert once or twice...

Who am I kidding…same! 😂😂

MamaClausToTheRescue · 21/04/2025 20:36

For breakfast, my 13 yo makes his own smashed avocado for his toast, or on other days he grates a tomato to have with a drizzle of olive oil. He enjoys making homemade pasta and gnocchi. He doesn’t eat any sweets or chocolate and loves salad, grains, vegetables. Am I winning your approval so far OP?
I used to be a total judgey pants too - none of my kids had a single prepared baby food meal and have never had a ready meal.
but guess what, it’s me - I buy the feckin coco pops because my kid also happens to be autistic and he bloody loves them. On days when he’s dysregulated and struggling - the coco pops (and yes - chocolate shreddies too) are his comfort food. So don’t be coming for the bastarding coco pops and don’t be making small-minded assumptions about the type of people who buy them. You never know what’s ahead of you.

PS and for some of the rest of you, if you’ve not tried pulled pork at a kids’ party you’re missing out. Fire it into soft baps and the kids are delighted. Piece of piss.

Weetabix was our version of a breakfast treat. I would spread jam over and then pour on the milk. The jam keeps the top layer of weetabix deliciously crisp. I doubt it would float my boat now but the memories are very fond.

Ah so you believe advertising… that’s foolish.

As a GP have you not had any public health training @Blueyseviltwin - what does your local Health and Wellbeing Strategy say about Best Start in Life and how that impacts across population cohorts and reduces inequalities?

FleurDeFleur · 21/04/2025 19:43

😂I'm thinking duck, wild salmon en croute, chocolate Krave cereal, porridge, yoghurt, a BBQ joint of pork and Tango.
Then when they arrive at school, a plain rice cake.

🤣🤣 maybe include a pot of homemade coleslaw, to dip said rice cake into??

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 21/04/2025 20:41

You have no idea what neglect is at all. This is what I was laughing at.

Real neglect is not having essentials like a bed. Going to school with underwear covered in faeces because you are too afraid to use the toilet at home. Not being fed in the school holidays because your parents spend all their money on alcohol or drugs. NOT having a bowl of chocolate cereal once or twice a week as a treat or even more regularly. 🙄

CorbyTrouserPress · 21/04/2025 20:41

Obese, uneducated, poor people?

Am I right? Is that the answer you wanted?

Good thinking.
Then home to a slab of beef, an antelope burger and some potato wedges.

chipsandpeas · 21/04/2025 19:00

theres a oreo cereal......need to try that

The Oreo one is disappointing @chipsandpeas. Having tried most of the chocolate type cereals my DC report the kitkat cereal as being the chocolatiest.

I mix it up, sometimes sensible sometimes fun. DS2 had odd mealtimes today so finished the day with a bowl of crunch nut with a chopped banana so I didn’t feel so guilty.

TheIceBear · 21/04/2025 20:44

I agree about lion bar cereal that sounds really grim . However I know If I served pulled pork and coleslaw at a party 90 percent of the children I know wouldn’t touch it…tbh I wouldn’t touch it myself sounds horrible. Getting cravings for coco pops now.

GivingUpFinally · 21/04/2025 20:45

I buy coco pops, krave and nut clusters with chocolate. Not all st the same time and sporadically. Usually for me and H. The 10 yo occasionally has a bowl. It's not used as breakfast but more like a snack/treat.

And, I'm completely happy with this set up. I don't ever walk down the cereal aisle thinking about what/how and or when other family's eat their sugar laden UPF box of glory.

It's a treat.

Teenybub · 21/04/2025 20:47

Please, preach at us more OP.

Surely you recognise that different people have different levels of education about food and what is needed for a balanced diet? Different amounts of money and time available to provide a meal, different health conditions/disabilities that might mean they need to feed the children something the children can make themselves?

Just to add, I eat a balanced diet which includes a chocolate cereal for breakfast every day, I like to start my day with something I enjoy.
