To not want to get hair cut every 8 weeks?

ForOliveMember · 21/04/2025 12:46

My hair salon used to charge me £40 for a wash, cut and blow dry providing you didn't go more than 12 weeks between visits. If you decided to leave it longer than 12 weeks they would charge you £10 extra, so £50. To be honest sometimes I didn't need or want my hair done every 12 weeks. After giving birth for example I was a month late and my hairdresser rang me to tell me I would have to pay the extra as it had been over 12 weeks. I did, but I thought it was a bit off.

Anyway, I went to book in for cut and they have changed the time limit to 8 weeks and also upped the prices. So now it's going to cost me £55 for the same wash, cut and blow dry.

I understand the longer people leave it between cuts then the more they will have to cut off but I always get the same cut, 2 inches off and layers trimmed. I am always out the door within 40 mins of arriving no matter how much I've had cut off. The blow dry takes the longest and usually I will tell them just to dry it however it's quickest for them.

Do all salons do this? Is this normal?

I pay for a wash cut and style at the going rate whether it’s been 4 weeks or 4 months. Their price is their price list and yes it will vary depending on short mid or long, but I’ve always just paid the going rate for long hair. There’s no top of £10 because I’m 2 weeks late. I’m never set on when I go anyway. Usually only 3 times a year

NotSafeInTaxis · 21/04/2025 12:49

Never heard of that. I'd change hairdresser.

Piffle11 · 21/04/2025 12:49

I’ve never heard of this before! And surely it doesn’t make a difference if they’re cutting off an inch or half an inch – I would’ve thought they were still making the same amount of ‘cuts’.

I’d be finding a new hairdresser, OP.

MissJeanBrodiesmother · 21/04/2025 12:50

I would look fir another salon. It does not cost more to cut an extra inch or two off your hair. They are just being greedy.

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 21/04/2025 12:50

Never heard of this before tbh. I know how difficult it can be for some, but I would be looking for a different salon if it was just for a trim and blow-dry

herbalteabag · 21/04/2025 12:50

I haven't heard of this. I would change hairdressers - I like to get my hair cut about every 3 months and definitely not after 8 weeks!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 21/04/2025 12:50

I would think of it as them giving you a discount for being a frequent and regular customer. If you are less frequent, you don't get the discount.

I have collar-length hair which grows quickly. I go every five weeks <sigh>

SpainToday · 21/04/2025 12:50

I’ve never heard of that OP. My hair grows like crazy, so the arrangement you describe would work for me but I accept not everyone has my sort of hair!

yeesh · 21/04/2025 12:51

Never heard of this. Surely your hair won’t grow 2 inches in 8 weeks!

Augustus40 · 21/04/2025 12:51

After 2 years of cutting my own hair it now looks terrible.

Going forward will try Supercuts for a dry cut only.

Cannot justify normal prices these days.

I think mine might but I wouldn’t accept the pricing arrangement!

I think the longer you leave it, particularly with shorter hair, it’s no longer just considered a cut, but a ‘re-style’.
My hairdresser doesn’t do this, but then again they charge a fortune for everything anyway!

Maray1967 · 21/04/2025 12:52

No. I pay £30 for a wash, cut and blow dry. £60 if I have it coloured as well. There is no extra charge for leaving longer between appointments.

Thirteenblackcat · 21/04/2025 12:53

I’d be looking for a new salon. You are a loyal customer and they are penalising you for not needing a haircut within a certain time frame

Sonolanona · 21/04/2025 12:54

That's nuts. Hair grows at approximately 1/2 inch a month (except a few exceptions) so they are charging you an extra £10 for half an inch more hair which doesn't take more skill or time to cut?!
I'd be changing salons!
I go when I feel like it; might be 3 months or 6 if I decide to grow it, I don't get charged a penny more!

AcquadiP · 21/04/2025 12:54

My hair is coloured and it's thick so 12 weeks is far too long for me. I used to have a cut and colour every 6 weeks but this became too expensive. Now I have a dry cut at 4 weeks and a cut, colour, blow dry and straighten at 8 weeks. My hairdresser doesn't charge me extra, I find it cheeky that yours does.

stripedrollerskates · 21/04/2025 12:55

Find another salon?!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 21/04/2025 12:55

No, that's ridiculous. Find another hairdresser.

ThinWomansBrain · 21/04/2025 12:55

that's weird and grabby - find a new salon, tell the old one why

I agree with PPs perspective of viewing it as a frequent customer discount - maybe the salon should think about their marketing!

BethDuttonYeHaw · 21/04/2025 12:56

They can charge whatever they want.

they are offering a discount for regular customers.

you can chose to pay or go elsewhere

Katemax82 · 21/04/2025 12:57

That's ridiculous, I just get my hair cut at mastercutters once a year or so, the price is the same regardless

No they are giving a discount for frequent users. People who go very frequently probably like feeling like they are getting bonus prices.

it’s strange how people look at things differently. Like glass half full vs half empty.

the prices seem very low to me so it all sounds a bargain anyway

Augustus40 · 21/04/2025 13:01

I hate paying for my hair to be washed. Dry cut all the way for me.

PandaCwtch · 21/04/2025 13:04

Sounds like your hairdresser has made a marketing/PR mistake by not saying the standard prince is £55, reduced to £40 for frequent customers (or perhaps they are and you've framed it the other way for your post).

They are entitled to charge however they wish, as long as they are up front about it. It clearly doesn't suit you, so you need to find somewhere else.

If I were rich, I'd pay for someone to wash my hair on a regular basis. I find it really relaxing.
