To not want to get hair cut every 8 weeks?

My hair salon used to charge me £40 for a wash, cut and blow dry providing you didn't go more than 12 weeks between visits. If you decided to leave it longer than 12 weeks they would charge you £10 extra, so £50. To be honest sometimes I didn't need or want my hair done every 12 weeks. After giving birth for example I was a month late and my hairdresser rang me to tell me I would have to pay the extra as it had been over 12 weeks. I did, but I thought it was a bit off.

Anyway, I went to book in for cut and they have changed the time limit to 8 weeks and also upped the prices. So now it's going to cost me £55 for the same wash, cut and blow dry.

I understand the longer people leave it between cuts then the more they will have to cut off but I always get the same cut, 2 inches off and layers trimmed. I am always out the door within 40 mins of arriving no matter how much I've had cut off. The blow dry takes the longest and usually I will tell them just to dry it however it's quickest for them.

Do all salons do this? Is this normal?

I have my hair cut when I fancy it and can afford it, not on.a regular basis.

I've never known a salon do what yours is doing. I wouldn't be going back!

No they are giving a discount for frequent users. People who go very frequently probably like feeling like they are getting bonus prices.

it’s strange how people look at things differently. Like glass half full vs half empty.

the prices seem very low to me so it all sounds a bargain anyway

Well I disagree. £10 more for half an inch extra growth is nuts.

my hairdresser charges £30 for a cut style and blow dry and I pay £70 if I want cut and colour ( style and blow dry)

PuppyMonkey · 21/04/2025 15:31

It’s up to them what they charge and it’s up to you to decide you’d rather not go there.

Wonder how many other customers will vote with their feet.

No. I pay £30 for a wash, cut and blow dry. £60 if I have it coloured as well. There is no extra charge for leaving longer between appointments.

How I would love this. I would do it every 3 months if I paid £30/40 or even £50.
im in London where it’s just 85 for that and the longer your hair it’s a bit more

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 21/04/2025 15:51

View it this way: They're offering a discount to loyal customers. And probably charging whatever gives them the best business model with the highest profit. It's not weird, grabby or unethical - they're running a business.

You're free to go elsewhere for your haircut if you prefer, though. I have long hair, which some salons charge extra for, and I also have preferences based on salons that offer cheaper haircuts to customers who don't need pampering or lengthy whatever-treatments - just spray some water in it, give it a straight cut and let me get on with my day.

SharpOpalNewt · 21/04/2025 15:53

Some charge more for long hair for a cut & blow dry. Others charge on actual time. I've never heard of charging more as you don't have it cut very often. Mine still only takes a few minutes to actually cut whether it has been two or four months between cuts. The blow dry takes longer as my hair is long, I don't mind paying more for that.

PonyPatter44 · 21/04/2025 15:56

Sounds absolutely ludicrous. I would be changing hairdresser.

Londontown12 · 21/04/2025 15:57

I’m a hairdresser that’s insane !!!
there trying to keep clients coming in regularly but they are totally going about that the wrong way !! Not very professional!
if I went every 8’weeks I wud have no hair left !
I have mine done every 12 weeks if I felt pressure to go in sooner for extra money being charged they would lose me as a client and I would never ever do this to my clients

mylittlekomododragon · 21/04/2025 16:01

Never heard of this! I have my hair cut about three times a year and it’s no dearer for being so long between cuts.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 21/04/2025 16:04

I've been going to the same hairdresser for 20 years, never heard of this...I'd wouldn't go back

arcticpandas · 21/04/2025 16:08

I pay 65 for wash, cut, light brushing. But I go max 3 times a year..

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 16:25

I cut my own hair these days. It looks just as good.

JazzyBBBG · 21/04/2025 16:47

I could kind of understand if it was really heavily styled but if it's just long and hanging - no. I bet they don't price the men like this.

HollieHock · 21/04/2025 16:50

I think that's really cheeky of them. I'd go somewhere else.
