To not want to get hair cut every 8 weeks?

ForOliveMember · 21/04/2025 12:46

My hair salon used to charge me £40 for a wash, cut and blow dry providing you didn't go more than 12 weeks between visits. If you decided to leave it longer than 12 weeks they would charge you £10 extra, so £50. To be honest sometimes I didn't need or want my hair done every 12 weeks. After giving birth for example I was a month late and my hairdresser rang me to tell me I would have to pay the extra as it had been over 12 weeks. I did, but I thought it was a bit off.

Anyway, I went to book in for cut and they have changed the time limit to 8 weeks and also upped the prices. So now it's going to cost me £55 for the same wash, cut and blow dry.

I understand the longer people leave it between cuts then the more they will have to cut off but I always get the same cut, 2 inches off and layers trimmed. I am always out the door within 40 mins of arriving no matter how much I've had cut off. The blow dry takes the longest and usually I will tell them just to dry it however it's quickest for them.

Do all salons do this? Is this normal?

Ridiculous though I suppose it is a regular customer discount rather than surcharge really.

find an independent, mine worked from her spare bedroom, £30 a cut

AprilBunny · 21/04/2025 13:10

Look on it as £50 every four months or whatever and forget about the £40 price (as long as you are happy with the salon).

They can charge whatever they want.

they are offering a discount for regular customers.

you can chose to pay or go elsewhere

Yes I'm aware they can charge whatever they want. It's not so much about the price, it's adding extra on top for no justifiable reason.

Getting a hair cut every 8 weeks or less isn't really needed by most people. I'm still a regular repeat customer (over 5 years) I just don't want to get it cut every 8 weeks.

I’m an every seven week person since pricing structure would suit me.

Natsku · 21/04/2025 13:14

If you have your hair cut less often it'll all balance out anyway despite the higher price.

No way would I get my hair cut every 8 weeks, it's more like every 8 months for me!

Vaxtable · 21/04/2025 13:16

Mine doesn’t do this. Never heard of it and I would be changing hairdressers

Ellie1015 · 21/04/2025 13:16

If they cut 2 inches or 12 inches it is the same job. I could understand different price for restyle compared to a trim or some cuts may be more complicated than others. I would move to another hairdresser rather than pay a different price if over 8 weeks.

lunaemma · 21/04/2025 13:17

I go every 9-12 months for mine and pay exactly the same price as anyone else! My hairdresser even says don’t come back before 6 months as it’s not worth it for my hair

DUsername · 21/04/2025 13:19

Never heard of this. Mine certainly don't do it - they do have different prices for short hair and long for some services though.

ForOliveMember · 21/04/2025 13:22

They also have another option called "redesign" which is for people wanting a change of style, which is another £10 extra.

I've booked in with another salon to see how it goes.

YANBU to change hairdresser due to price if you can find another good one for less money.

But they’re not ‘adding extra on top’.

Yes I think it would balance out, but I can't help but feel annoyed paying £15 extra for the same service just a few weeks later.

I’ve never heard of this!

Eight weeks, unless you have v short hair or a very complex cut, is excessive

I’d change salons

Silvers11 · 21/04/2025 13:26

Not the norm at my hairdressers. I get a wash, cut and blow dry for around £30 and a wash cut, colour and blow dry for £67

No difference to the cost no matter how frequently or infrequently I go. They have a price list and that's what they use

I'd find another Salon if I were you!

ACynicalDad · 21/04/2025 13:26

Our dog groomer does this, I kind of get it there as there are typically more mats and it is a bigger job, his hair is pretty slow growing and he only needs it about 3 times a year not six and she is cheaper than most so I take it on the chin but at a hair dresser I'd go elsewhere.

NannyR · 21/04/2025 13:27

My hairdresser charges like this but it doesn't really bother me. I see it more as a discount for regular customers.

How much do they charge?

BatchCookBabe · 21/04/2025 13:30

This is utterly batshit. Never heard of this. I'm amazed you haven't changed hairdressers already @ForOliveMember They don't deserve to have a business IMO. It's like the bloody dentist. Don't go every 6 months and they knock you off their books. It's not so easy to find a new dentist though. Should be easy enough to find a new hairdresser!

As pps have said, find a new hairdresser.

WaltzingWaters · 21/04/2025 13:30

I’d find another hairdresser. I go 3-4 months between cuts and have a hairdresser who comes to the house, costs £15 for a trim.

MayaPinion · 21/04/2025 13:32

It would be cheaper to go three or four times a year and pay £50 rather than pay £40 every 8 weeks.

£50 x 4 (once every 3 months) = £200

Or even better:

£50 x 3 (once every 4 months) = £150

Versus:

£40 x 6.5 (once every 8 weeks) = £260

with the added benefit of fewer tipping opportunities. If you like the salon just drop out of feeling pressured to go every 8 weeks. It’s a big time commitment on top of everything else.

I’ve never heard of this either. I’ve recently changed to a new salon and was a bit unhappy with the pricing as it’s a lot more than my previous salon.
I only changed as my previous hairdresser took so long to respond to messages to book appointments. Weeks not days.
But reading this thread I am being seriously overcharged! I go every 5 weeks for a root colour, wash and blow dry and fringe trim and just paid £95! Time to find a new salon for me too!

BatchCookBabe · 21/04/2025 13:38

ForOliveMember · 21/04/2025 13:33

Mine charges £18 for a dry cut. Find one that does a dry cut.

There are a couple in my market town who charge £50-£60 for a wash, cut, and blow dry, and they don't do dry cuts. They can't make enough money from people with dry cuts, so they make you pay £50-£60. 🙄

Luckily I found a hairdresser a mile out of town in a little parade of shops on a big housing estate who charges less than £20 for a dry cut. She does a good job too!

Upsidedownagain · 21/04/2025 13:39

I only get mine cut around every 12 weeks, sometimes a bit longer (shoulder length). I currently pay about £50 for a cut and blow dry. (I always have one of the same two stylists who've been there first a number of years - the more senior charges a bit more). The money doesn't bother me but being manipulated into going more often by a lower price would. It's unfair to people with longer styles that stay looking good between cuts.

But if you go every 12 weeks, you're only be paying £4.58 a week if is now £55, whereas for £40 for 8 weeks you're paying £5 a week. So it actually works out cheaper (though you're don't say what the lower price is).

If you otherwise like the stylist, keep going there but go less frequently.

ShillyShallySherbet · 21/04/2025 13:39

Find another salon. I go for a dry cut and it’s £20. The hairdresser tells me I need to come back every 8 weeks but in reality I go every 3 months or whenever I feel like I need it so sometimes longer.
