To not want to get hair cut every 8 weeks?

ForOliveMember · 21/04/2025 12:46

My hair salon used to charge me £40 for a wash, cut and blow dry providing you didn't go more than 12 weeks between visits. If you decided to leave it longer than 12 weeks they would charge you £10 extra, so £50. To be honest sometimes I didn't need or want my hair done every 12 weeks. After giving birth for example I was a month late and my hairdresser rang me to tell me I would have to pay the extra as it had been over 12 weeks. I did, but I thought it was a bit off.

Anyway, I went to book in for cut and they have changed the time limit to 8 weeks and also upped the prices. So now it's going to cost me £55 for the same wash, cut and blow dry.

I understand the longer people leave it between cuts then the more they will have to cut off but I always get the same cut, 2 inches off and layers trimmed. I am always out the door within 40 mins of arriving no matter how much I've had cut off. The blow dry takes the longest and usually I will tell them just to dry it however it's quickest for them.

Do all salons do this? Is this normal?

I think I've stuck with my current hairdresser because the salon is near my house, they always have appointments at very short notice and my hairdresser is really nice. Cuts have always been fine, but if I'm being honest my previous hairdresser before I moved house was much better so I think that is why I'm begrudging paying any more. I am definitely going to try different salons and find someone else.

I've never heard of this but my hairdressers' annoys me by sending me reminders after six weeks. I mean, my hair is attached to my head, I know how long it is. I go every four months or so (long bob so it doesn't look too messy) but one time the hairdresser - having asking me how much shorter I wanted my hair - told me 'I've left it a bit longer this time.' I thought 'you don't get me that way!' and replied brightly 'Oh, that's good because I've been thinking of letting it grow a bit.' My, did her face fall.

I appreciate that times are hard BUT to someone like me with straight hair and no colours, a hair appointment is not something you need every couple of months.

I would think of it as them giving you a discount for being a frequent and regular customer. If you are less frequent, you don't get the discount.

I have collar-length hair which grows quickly. I go every five weeks <sigh>

But then it should be “get x off if you book your next appointment within y weeks”.

Ringing her up post birth to tell her she needs to pay more because she didn’t book an appointment is bonkers.

GG1986 · 21/04/2025 14:18

So bizarre! My hairdresser is amazing and doesn't mind that I only get my hair cut when I want to! Which is usually every 4 months or so. She doesn't charge me any extra and doesn't pressurise me to book in. Find a new hairdresser!

Franjipanl8r · 21/04/2025 14:20

Don’t pay for a wash or blow dry. Just go as often as you want and get a wet cut (wash it before you go). I pay £18 per hair cut. They just spritz it with water to damp it and cut it.

Franjipanl8r · 21/04/2025 14:21

Also get a new hair dresser.

CiaoMeow · 21/04/2025 14:33

I would change hairdressers.

I also have had experience of being charged more because my hair was longer than shoulder length. It's a nonsense.

Charged more for a cut, that is.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 21/04/2025 14:34

If you go every 8 weeks, that means you go approx 6 times per year. Which at £40 per visit costs £240 per year. If you go every 12 weeks, that means you go approx 4 times per year. Which at £55 per visit costs you £220 per year. So you can either be happy that you’re paying less in the long run or find a new hairdresser.

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 21/04/2025 14:36

I simply cannot afford to get my hair cut every 8 weeks. I normally have a cut and full head colour and blow dry but once every 5 months or so as I can’t really afford it.

Even just a cut every 8 weeks mounts up. I would change salon.

Which does make no sense. Longe4 hair is frequently less hard to cut. DDs takes much less time than DS’s hair.

WhatsitWiggle · 21/04/2025 14:40

I have curly hair - if I cut it every 8 weeks, it would look like it was getting shorter and shorter! I tend to go every 4 months, although I tried a curly cut last year at a different salon and they cut it much shorter than I wanted, so it's been 6 months and I'll likely give it another 3 before I need a trim.

If you like that hairdresser, just stick to the times you want your hair cut. Even with the extra £10, if you're going 14 weeks rather than 8, you're saving money over the course of the year.

This made me chuckle. 😆

SanFairyAnnie · 21/04/2025 14:48

My usual hairdresser was recently promoted to senior stylist so charges an extra £10 per visit. It's exactly the same cut and blow dry but a 20% increase.

Gundogday · 21/04/2025 14:51

BethDuttonYeHaw · 21/04/2025 12:56

They can charge whatever they want.

they are offering a discount for regular customers.

you can chose to pay or go elsewhere

But the op is a regular customer. She’s been going to the salon a lot.

i would change hairdressers. Around here, they’re charging £35-45 for wash, cut and blowdry.

Olika · 21/04/2025 14:54

I would stop going if my hairdresser called/txt me reminding of any deadlines. I wouldn’t need haircut every 8 weeks even though I have short hair.

postmanshere · 21/04/2025 14:59

I’ve never heard of that. I used to pay £70 a go at a flashy hair dresser in town for a wash, cut and dry and now I go to a cheap chain hairdresser (because my needs are quite simple, just a trim) and pay £14 for a dry cut. No complaints. Then I just wash and style myself. I’m much happier with that price but there has never been any suggestion that I should pay more or less based on how long it has been.

ForOliveMember · 21/04/2025 15:08

Just to clarify, I did ring up and make the appointment after having my baby, I think I spoke to one of the other stylists or a receptionist. Nothing about price was mentioned I just made the appointment time. Then the day of my appointment my actual hairdresser rang to say that she had noticed it had been over 12 weeks so would have to charge me the extra as my appointment would likely take longer. She said she just wanted me to know before I came into the salon. I said sure, no problem. But my appointment took 40 minutes which is exactly the same as it usually takes.

Lord. I rarely go the hairdressers. I've been to several over the years and none have bothered with anything like this. I found a decent one literally on my doorstep and pay the same when she trimmed my long hair as when she cut the whole lot off. Admittedly now I will be going more often now it's shorter but that's not for any kind of discount. It's to stop me looking like Boris Johnson

Member984815 · 21/04/2025 15:13

I put yabu , unreasonable to accept this just go to another hairdressers, I go months without a haircut and my hairdressers don't charge extra

TroysMammy · 21/04/2025 15:14

It was 14 months ago I had my haircut. I've got another 4 weeks to go to have it cut again. My hairdresser will charge me her rate for a wash cut and blow dry. Your hairdresser is bonkers and greedy.

Happyspendingthedayinthegarden · 21/04/2025 15:18

Sorry bust with GC & haven't read all posts - have you thought about having your hair cut with a trainee?

DH & me have our hair cut at home. We live on a community of over 55's & get neighbours in which means our house is full of old ladies waiting for their perms to 'cook' while others get their hair done. DH makes cakes etc. Makes for a lovely communal morning.

RaininSummer · 21/04/2025 15:19

I pay 21 pounds every 12 weeks or so and have a dry cut. I couldn't cope with that expense.

Darkclothes · 21/04/2025 15:19

I recently had my 1st haircut in 12mths- what would your salon charge for that???

I've never heard of their money making scheme. Do they have a loyalty card- so after 5 cuts you get a discount on the 6th? That is the only thing I could think of when you mentioned being charged extra is not cut every 8 weeks.

Look for a mobile hair dresser!

Dinosweetpea · 21/04/2025 15:24

No, that's not normal! I go about every 5 or 6 months and pay the same!
