Silliest place you’ve seen a dog owner take their dog

To ask where the silliest / most inappropriate place you’ve seen a dog taken by the owner

Inspired by recent posts complaining about dogs being everywhere in cafes etc

Yesterday in our local Cathedral Easter service , a dog was taken up to the altar for communion with its owners. I’ve seen it all now 😃
I was unfortunately unable to see if they attempted to snaffle a bit of bread for the dog , but it honestly wouldn’t have surprised me
Just why ?

Depends on the dog. Mines a gundog. Totally unfazed by loud bangs. Actively loves bonfire night. Hates untrained yappy dogs running over to him, climbing all over him and refusing to leave him alone though.

I knew a couple who are into war re-enactment. Don't ask me what era!
Lots of guns, gunpowder, cannons etc. Their dog was fine with it.

They acclimatise to the heat as well. The reason heat is seen as such an issue in the UK is because we don't get much of it, and when we do, it only lasts a few days so dogs never really get used to it.

But dogs who live in Florida or other hot places live in those temperatures for months - it's just their normal.

Yep, I know someone who rescued a dog from Spain. She was used to high heat so got walked in the summer here whilst everyone else (including me) was trying to keep their dog out the garden.
She got so much abuse. But her dog was fine.

8dateslater · 21/04/2025 14:05

We've also had a dog that was unfazed by loud noises and would have been fine with fireworks.

The toilet thing is a real issue. If it's a dog friendly place , what are you meant to do?

I walk a couple of dogs who came from Cyprus - honestly, they don't care about the heat. They will lie outside and bake on the pavement for hours and won't even pant, lol.

There seems to be a bit of a trend lately for people to think that if their dog can't cope with something, then no dog can cope? It's a bit odd.

Yes, all dogs are different. I have an ancient black greyhound. When it is hot out, she will lie in the garden and then come back in. She gets so hot, I can't touch her! She cools down and goes back out and does it all again 😂

I wont walk her in high heats though. She turns into melted liquorice.

Fair point. These establishments need to put "Dogs welcome" signs up so it's clear to all.

So long as it's not one of those naff "dogs welcome, humans tolerated" signs. I saw one once that said "live laugh woof" 😂

Makes a change from it being anti trans 🤷‍♀️

That’s simply not true that Mumsnet is anti trans. Being pro womens rights does not make you anti trans at all.

My mums dog came to her funeral. It was her wish that she was there.

I don't think a funeral is a silly place for a dog to be at all. I bet most funeral directors have seen people bring all sorts of weird and wonderful pets to funerals!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 21/04/2025 14:17

A polling place. We had cats as well.

Off topic sort of - Our local cathedral does a service for pets once a year OP! It’s an actually lovely. Someone bought a mini pony once. And they have a donkey and sheep at the crib service on Xmas eve.

There was a mini donkey for sale at the cathedral service?

Well I never.

minnienono · 21/04/2025 14:22

There was a pony (not miniature), duck, sheep, goat, rabbit, hamsters, cats and a plethora of dogs at the annual pet service last year, nobody ate anyone else but I don’t think the smaller rodents were comfortable whereas there’s often a dog or two in church, they are not allowed to approach the altar as per our rules (assistance dogs would be fine but not been an issue)

Why is mumsnet suddenly anti dog?

I'm not anti dog.

I actually really like dogs - not as much as cats admittedly.

But I think dogs should be treated as dogs and not substitute children or mini humans.

I think dogs are great in their appropriate places and I don't think that includes food shops or supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. Or libraries - there is one comes in my local library and just yaps the whole time

I like to be able to go into dog free spaces if I want to.

I'm anti the way some dog owners allow their dogs to worry and chase animals and birds.
And of course anti dog mess that irresponsible dog owners don't clear up.

As always it's not the dogs that are the problem its the behaviour of humans that causes the problems for other people.

TheNightingalesStarling · 21/04/2025 14:24

A friend deliberately chose a wedding venue so her dog could be there.

However she wouldn't take her dog to a random wedding.

You need context sometimes... like with funerals. Its fine for the beloved family pets to be there (even the Queen got that!) Its wrong to just randomly take your pet.

Speckyfourfries · 21/04/2025 14:24

Our local cinema does dog friendly screenings. I love dogs but FFS... does a dog really want to sit in a dark room for 2 hours?

YeOldeGreyhound · 21/04/2025 14:18

Ah, there was a thing about taking selfies with your pets at polling stations.

The BBC roll out a feature every general election on dogs in polling stations. The text gets recycled every time and for a few years there was an amusing section that read "dogs may not yet have the vote, but [filler article on dogs on polling stations]." The addition of "yet" tickled me as it read as though the author thought that canine suffrage was just around the corner 😆

Last time i saw the article alas the text had been updated to remove the "yet"!

Wasn't that the plot of an episode of The Vicar of Dibley?... 🤔

PhilippaGeorgiou · 21/04/2025 14:28

@TerrifiedPassenger- how acclimatised can a service animal be?

You clearly don't know the answer to that question, because if you had the remotest idea what the training for a service dog is, you would never have asked it. It is also ableist and very insulting to suggest that people with disabilities do not care about the welfare of their service dogs, upon whom they depend. Nobody with a service dog would put their companion at risk.

8dateslater · 21/04/2025 14:28

I also wonder if the increase in dog friendly places like petting farms, museums, shopping centeres etc is due to the increase in strict rules in rentals.

Things like static holiday parks don't allow you to leave dogs unattended now days. I swear that want the case 30 years ago

Weve definitely been in the position of a windy/wet day on holiday, trapped in a caravan looking for family friendly indoor activities that are dog friendly

Saw a dog on the Tube the other day. Didn't think they'd be allowed. Woman had it in a large bag on her knee. It was quite a long journey too and of course I spent the whole journey wondering where it would go to the loo if caught short and who would have to clean it up.

I take my dog on the tube or the train all the time. My dog can easily do a 4h train ride without needing the loo.

A dog just doesn't pee like that, they know to hold it and need certain conditions to pee. A dog who's quietly sitting in the tube is not going to suddenly pee or poop out of the blue.

I'm pro dogs rights. Can we possibly keep the ongoing trans row to the many threads already about it - we are rowing about dogs here.

SiobhanSharpe · 21/04/2025 14:31

@Differentforgirls
So the Supreme Court is vilifying TW? Biological reality vilifies trans women too?
A viewpoint showing why the SC ruling was needed in the first place.
(apologies for the derail. I like dogs but would not have one -- can't stand the shit. The shit thing applies to the crap owners too. )

I go to a lot of festivals, mostly older people, Rock/Prog/Blues, usually 4 nights camping. Never used to allow dogs but most do now.

I don’t have a dog, badly attacked as a child so a bit scared of them tbh, sorry. But I do wonder whether taking them to the stage, right by the speakers, is actually fun for creatures with such acute hearing.

Also not keen on those who take them into the shower.
