Have you ever visited somewhere that was haunted?

Just that really. Have you ever visited somewhere and had a paranormal experience?

When I was a teen, camping with family in the Lake District I had an experience. The campsite had an odd atmosphere. It felt dead and flat. I woke in the night. It was quiet, I then heard a childlike voice saying it hurts over and over. When I looked outside the tent there was a white silhouette. My dad says it was a nightmare but I was definitely awake

It could have been, but it didn't sound right, really hard to explain. I also saw the white by the tent. The whole place just felt off.

I know what you mean. As if there's something missing or off or other about the whole way the sound comes across.

Stayed in an old Tudor era pub / hotel, we had stayed there before but this time was in a different area of the building. I just felt uneasy, like we were being watched. Not malevolent, just that we weren't alone. We were just going to sleep when the kettle turned itself on, my then-partner got up and turned it off. A while later it turned itself on again. This time he unplugged it at the wall.
The next day he told me that room was said to be haunted, he hadn't wanted to say anything when we were allocated that room, so as not to freak me out.

That is utterly chilling. I wouldn't be able to sleep.
My parents stayed in an old pub in South Liverpool and their TV kept coming on in the night

Yes, it's really hard to explain, but if you've experienced it, you just know what it means

Edinburgh Vaults. I still can't explain what happened to me in there and no one believes me.

Well you have to try now you’ve said that …

My parents' house is supposedly haunted though I have never seen anything. We had a lady who lived with us for many years, she's like part of the family. She told me she saw a woman in white with long black hair floating on the landing in front of my room at 9 in the morning! She was surprised and the ghost was surprised and disappeared the second after they exchanged look. I know her very well, she's like an aunty to me and not a lying type. I don't feel afraid when I'm at my mom's house even though my dad died there. If there are ghosts I feel they are good kinds.

When I was a uni student I lived in a tudor house opposite the Dell - the old football grounds in southampton, the house has been knocked down now but I saw a ghost there in my bedroom and another girl who i'd lent my room to in the holidays also saw her on a separate occasion and i hadn't mentioned anything - I'm afraid I was fairly rude to said ghost and never saw her again.

What was it doing?

OhWhistle · 20/04/2025 21:15

Someone told me to make the sign of the Cross even if a nonbeliever as most ghosts will respect that or dislike it enough to go away.

I wish I had known this ages ago. There was one memorably terrible Victorian house where I felt as if eyes were drilling into my back whenever I was in the kitchen or bathroom. It has a concreted-over basement in the pantry cupboard. A friend of mine who visited refused to go upstairs at all.

Had loads of experiences over the years, most recently we stayed in a converted barn airbnb in Cornwall. Was fine all week, but the last night we had a few spooky goings on. I got woken up at 5am as something moved/jolted the bed, and then I realised that our fan had turned itself off in the night. My adult son got woken up by something tapping on his bedside table, and when my adult daughter woke up her bedside lamp had been switched off. Me and DH also swore we heard children whispering in the corridor to the bathroom when we were packing up as well. It stopped us in our tracks and we just looked at each other.
We called it the energy saving ghost as it obviously likes saving electricity 🤣

It was probably the B and B owner cutting costs.

I’m not going to say there’s nothing in it as I guess you never really know if you dont know. However, I do always wonder why ghosts - often supposedly dating back to Victorian times and earlier - would play with things like electric kettles and televisions.

Well maybe it's an energy burst.
Or maybe it's one of the live people emitting or focusing energy.
Or maybe some ghosts just use what's there.

Emitting energy to turn on a light sounds a bit like a spectacular sort of fart🤭

I worked in a hotel which was a restored 14th century castle. Hotel was completely empty one evening as we were preparing for an exclusive-use wedding so guests arriving the next day. There were a small number of staff finishing the setup for the wedding on the top floor about midnight, we all bundled into the lift which suddenly stopped at one of the floors but the doors didn’t open. All we could see was a light gradually getting stronger, and the sound of footsteps and a dragging sound, before a shadow came across the gap at the bottom of the lift doors. The light suddenly went off, lift started up again and carried on down to the ground floor where we all agreed that the only people in the building were all in the lift together. No one dared to go up to the floor in question so doors were hurriedly locked and we all made a swift exit. No one ever did come up with a sensible explanation for it.

Chillingham castle ,we’ve stayed 3 times now twice in the coaching rooms and once in the dairy apartments ,
father in law has stayed in the lookout and lenser apartments , the grounds and apartments are great to explore always finding new areas we haven’t seen yet

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 20/04/2025 22:09

I've been to many apparently haunted places. My own home is according to some!
I actually went on a paranormal investigation/ghost hunting evening at a location near me and it was the biggest load of tosh. My sister and I spent the evening holding back hysterical laughter at the flashing cat ball throwing and bizarre radio tuning stuff and both felt the location was lovely and not remotely scary or intimidating. We were extremely polite and obviously didn't scoff or annoy the group leaders, but it really was so ridiculous. I'd absolutely LOVE for it all to be true though.

I worked in an office that had a vibe where you felt like you were being watched. There was a small room at the end of the corridor and I could not bear to be alone in there. It felt oppressive and like I was not alone. The lock to the room would also not work at random times, like the door would not open. I was in the office alone one day and the lift doors opened on their own and the radio came on. Very odd

I never believed in ghosts, never wanted to have a ghostly experience, but it happened to us in a rented house on holiday in Spain about 20 years ago. When we spoke to the owner much later he said that nothing had happened for about 10 years but recounted a number of incidents from when he was renovating the property. The atmosphere was horrendous. If we could have afforded to leave & stay somewhere else or go home, we would have. Three of us independently saw a little girl & described her as looking like someone we knew. We kept it from each other (so hadn't influenced the others) until one of us couldn't bear it any more. Seeing the girl wasn't actually as frightening as the awful atmosphere. It's hard to describe how frightening it was just being in that house. People don't believe me. I wouldn't have believed me. You don't believe it til it happens to you.

Block 11 in Auschwitz. I can’t explain the feeling when I walked down the stairs to the basement, it was like a feeling of total dread and misery came over me, the two gentlemen in front of me must have felt it too as we all kept looking at each other and had hunched over shoulders as if the ceiling was too low but it wasn’t. Couldn’t get out the place quick enough. This area of the block was where the first gas chamber was. After doing a bit of research when I came home I discovered a lot of visitors also felt this area was particularly haunted.

I stayed on the third floor of The Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool last year. Shared a huge twin room with my friend.

The first night, I was worken up because my duvet was being gently lifted off me, sort of being peeled back as if someone was going to get in. I grabbed it back and sort of wrapped myself in it like I was in a sausage roll. Then I heard scratching and rattling at the door. Then the scratching came along the wall, behind my bed and then the knocking and banging started on the wall that ran parallel to my bed. Next, a little girl said 'helloooooooooo' and giggled. The knocking went on all night.

My friend just wouldn't wake up and I was wide awake all night.

I told her about it in the morning and we decided to ask if there had been noise complaints from anyone else on our floor that night. Apparently not and the room next to us was empty. My friend told me to say about the voice. I was embarrassed but did. The receptionist went rather pale and said 'you heard The Little Girl??' and immediately offered to move us to another room.

Anyway, we decided to stay put and the next night, my friend told me to make sure I woke her up, whatever it took, if it happened again. Sure enough, the knocks and scratching started up again and it was my friend's turn to have a sleepless night!

The next evening, we decided to have a word with whatever was being a nuisance. We said we were only there for another two nights, we were sorry for invading their space but please could they let us sleep and then we'd be gone. There was a big bang, as if in acknowledgement, and then we were left in peace.

Every morning, the receptionist asked for an update!

From my experience of staying in the Crapelphi, they’d probably double booked the room.

Leasowe Castle in Liverpool. Woke up in the middle of the night to a man screaming, crying and saying no - I was freaked out, my initial thought was maybe a homeless man drunk and shouting? Later on that night I awoke to a horrible old woman’s face right in my face, I sat upright and woke my partner who told me I was just dreaming - I also thought maybe I was, so tried to go back to sleep. The next morning we woke up and partner told me he woke up around 3am and could hear horses galloping, very odd considering we were on the coast right next to the beach! I also thought maybe he was just hearing things and didn’t really believe him..

the next day I couldn’t stop thinking about what we experienced so I googled the history - it turns out that a man and his young son died in a fire right in the castle which explained the screaming.. and it also used to be an old racing ground for horses which explains the galloping sound!!

Terrifying but fascinating!

Has anyone else stayed here?

Edit - after googling again it wasn’t a fire. The man and his boy were locked in a room. He killed his son and then committed suicide!

It was imitation, we just used to call it that - it was right next door to what was the Gateway Inn and looks like a closed down Blue Keys Hotel.
