Have you ever visited somewhere that was haunted?

Rosieposy89 · 19/04/2025 22:01

Just that really. Have you ever visited somewhere and had a paranormal experience?

When I was a teen, camping with family in the Lake District I had an experience. The campsite had an odd atmosphere. It felt dead and flat. I woke in the night. It was quiet, I then heard a childlike voice saying it hurts over and over. When I looked outside the tent there was a white silhouette. My dad says it was a nightmare but I was definitely awake

OP any chance that might have been a real child asking for help?

Ever heard of Merchant Ivory, the film producers? They did Howard’s End, The Remains of the Day, and A Room With a View, just to name a few.
Anyhow, in high school, I hadn’t, not yet. I grew up in small town in California, and out in the country there was a wood mill where all the local young men worked - it was called Ivory Pine.
And my best friend lived next door in a big, two-story all-wood house, befitting whomever the head guy was at Ivory Pine. It was beautiful, that old house.
But since I’d known her age 5, my friend and her family had lived there and I had been there so often her mother had to shoo me away.
On this evening, we were watching a ridiculous made-for-tv movie about a witch - and ridiculous teenage witch at that out at Friend’s house.
Well, we weren’t really watching - we were talking and laughing about everything like we always did.
And somebody said, “hey did you we have a ghost?”
And I said that I’d been in this family only 5 years less than Friend, and if they had a ghost I was pretty sure I’d know about it - but don’t start talking about yet because I’ve gotta go to the bathroom.
You had to go up on a landing (which led up the stairs) and then down into the bathroom - which I did. And then I came out and stepped back up on the landing and bent to turn the doorknob into the kitchen - only the doorknob wasn’t there and that’s when the steps started down the staircase. They weren’t menacing - but I FREAKED OUT and kept feeling for the doorknob back into the kitchen and IT WASN’T THERE and the FOOTSTEPS KEPT COMING DOWN THE STAIRCASE and I was feeling up and down the door and there was simply no doorknob.
But those footsteps kept coming.
Finally - I found the doorknob and threw the door open and there were my sweet friends, laughing and joking like before.
That doorknob was not there.
Those footsteps were real.
That was 1974.
You’ll never convince me that was all in my head.
Never before or since experienced anything like it.
Oh yeah - Ivory Pine same family as the Ivory from Merchant Ivory.

There is an incredibly simple and completely reliable way to tell if a particular place is haunted.

If you think it is haunted...

..it isn't. Because ghosts don't exist.

Minimili · 20/04/2025 05:28

I was absolutely adamant that there was no such thing as ghosts and haunted places, I used to get frustrated with people insisting they had experienced something and even when I’d had previous spooky experiences I refused to believe it was anything supernatural. Over the last few months I’ve had some really frightening experiences, one actually happened last night.

I live in the middle of nowhere next to an unlit country road that’s one of the oldest in my town, I have lived in my house 15 years and walked up and down that road in the dark the whole time I’ve lived there before I had a car with no concerns.

A few months ago I was walking back from the gym and heard rustling behind me, the road doesn’t have pavement but has green verges on each side, one side is next to trees so there were dry leaves on the ground, it was only 7pm but pitch black and I was using the torch on my phone.
I turned round to see what made the noise and there was a figure that looked like they were dressed in black, they had a white almost luminous face with black eyes, our eyes locked and I was terrified, I swung the torch round to see what was in front of me in the hope cars might come or someone might be dog walking so I wasn’t alone, when I looked back the figure had gone.
It was literally a couple of seconds I looked away, it wasn’t possible for someone to just disappear when there was no where to go, the road is straight and they would have to climb a fence to disappear into the wooded area next to the verge with the trees.

I ran the rest of the way home and was in such a state that DP knew I wasn’t messing about or making it up, I have posted about it before on another thread. I refused to walk on the road for weeks but I loved walking in the countryside and missed it so I tried to convince myself I’d just imagined it, that got easier as time went on and I forgot the feeling of pure terror.

I went back to walking to the gym and back for a few weeks, one night I was walking to the gym and I saw a black figure again, this time it was more like a shadow, I watched for about 5 seconds as the shadow slowly moved across the road in front of me and disappeared mid way.
Again I was terrified and ran the rest of the way to the gym, I told the receptionist what I’d seen and she just said she wasn’t surprised with the amount of history in the area.

I was too scared to walk for another few weeks but now it’s getting darker later so last night I walked to the nearest supermarket for cat food and yet again I saw the black figure, I was still frightened but not as much as before. I googled to see if anyone had experienced similar but haven’t come across anything online.

I had a more unsettling experience when I was out so will have to go back to driving most places but it’s a shame as I live in a beautiful place and love walking.

I got the cat food and DP had said he’d pick me up when he finished work so I didn’t have to walk back too late, he ended up finishing later then usual so I thought I’d start walking back as it was busy with it being a weekend and the start of the journey was well lit busy roads.
I went to cross the road near some shops and noticed a black teenager (this is just to be descriptive not racist! I’d have mentioned if they were white or any other ethnicity) with his hood up standing in a shop doorway, when he saw me he shrank back into the doorway.

Normally this wouldn’t bother me, I even approached some teens outside a shop wearing hoodies pulled up last week and asked them to borrow a pound coin for a trolley, they were happy to help.
I have heard people describe spidey senses and gut instinct before but have never really felt it myself, I’ve felt scared and uncomfortable in situations but they are usually justified, the level of fear I felt and the pure instinct I was in danger was something I’d never felt before.

I ran to the nearest pub in the opposite direction and DP picked me up from there. I still feel like I had a lucky escape.
I think yesterday has taught me to stop wandering round in the dark alone! I might live in a safe area but that doesn’t completely remove all risks. I wonder if anyone else would have felt similarly or if I was just or edge from the previous spooky experience?

The Royal Kings Arms Hotel ,Lancaster .Right opposite the castle.Really creepy,TV switched on and off, lights on and off ,strange noise out in corridor like heavy breathing.
I checked out in the morning despite booking for 2 nights and I was given full refund because the person in reception acknowledged that room opposite mine was haunted.
Had never believed in ghosts etc before staying there.

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 20/04/2025 07:25

Had loads of experiences over the years, most recently we stayed in a converted barn airbnb in Cornwall. Was fine all week, but the last night we had a few spooky goings on. I got woken up at 5am as something moved/jolted the bed, and then I realised that our fan had turned itself off in the night. My adult son got woken up by something tapping on his bedside table, and when my adult daughter woke up her bedside lamp had been switched off. Me and DH also swore we heard children whispering in the corridor to the bathroom when we were packing up as well. It stopped us in our tracks and we just looked at each other.
We called it the energy saving ghost as it obviously likes saving electricity 🤣

FanofLeaves · 20/04/2025 07:47

My son and I stayed at the Red lion hotel in Colchester, he was only two so was in a little travel cot. It’s is reportedly a very haunted hotel and we were in one of the rooms that had had funny stuff happening randomly to other guests, tv or lamps turning on or what not. The decor is obviously very old fashioned, and behind the bed behind Perspex is part of the old wall dating back to medieval times, all made of twine and clay. Really interesting place.

I didn’t experience anything at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ but when my little boy woke up, he pointed at the armchair in front of his cot and said ‘oh! Lady gone!’ He wouldn’t leave that chair alone as we were getting ready to go out, and kept checking to see if it was occupied.

i went to Berlin a couple of years ago and stayed in the older part near checkpoint Charlie. Oh my god I felt so depressed the whole time we were there. Never ever felt like that before or since. I would just randomly start weeping, everything just felt pointless and it was just overwhelming sadness so matter what I was doing. Very, very strange. My DH still brings it up as it was just so out of character but I just couldn’t shake it.

We had an experience at the red lion, a book on our bedside table flew ten foot across the room in front of us, and landed open, face down, spine upwards.

Wow! It’s meant to be really haunted with several different presences.

would definitely stay again though, their rates are very reasonable 🤣

I stayed on the third floor of The Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool last year. Shared a huge twin room with my friend.

The first night, I was worken up because my duvet was being gently lifted off me, sort of being peeled back as if someone was going to get in. I grabbed it back and sort of wrapped myself in it like I was in a sausage roll. Then I heard scratching and rattling at the door. Then the scratching came along the wall, behind my bed and then the knocking and banging started on the wall that ran parallel to my bed. Next, a little girl said 'helloooooooooo' and giggled. The knocking went on all night.

My friend just wouldn't wake up and I was wide awake all night.

I told her about it in the morning and we decided to ask if there had been noise complaints from anyone else on our floor that night. Apparently not and the room next to us was empty. My friend told me to say about the voice. I was embarrassed but did. The receptionist went rather pale and said 'you heard The Little Girl??' and immediately offered to move us to another room.

Anyway, we decided to stay put and the next night, my friend told me to make sure I woke her up, whatever it took, if it happened again. Sure enough, the knocks and scratching started up again and it was my friend's turn to have a sleepless night!

The next evening, we decided to have a word with whatever was being a nuisance. We said we were only there for another two nights, we were sorry for invading their space but please could they let us sleep and then we'd be gone. There was a big bang, as if in acknowledgement, and then we were left in peace.

Every morning, the receptionist asked for an update!

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 20/04/2025 08:50

No, because there is no such things as ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties...
Honestly, the crap people believe!

EveryKneeShallBow · 20/04/2025 09:08

I’ve done ghost walks in Bristol, York, Edinburgh and St Andrews. I’ve stayed in a pub in England supposedly widely known for its ghosts ( been on tv programmes but I can’t remember the name), used to work in a really old creepy building in Bristol where years before partner in the firm hanged himself in the basement where I used to have to go and retrieve old documents. Often worked late after the admin staff had gone home. Never once have I ever experienced anything remotely paranormal. Or maybe I have, but I’m just oblivious.

Shit I stayed there years ago and in the middle of the night the lights came on. Checked with other relatives in the same hotel they said nope no lights on you must have been dreaming. Fucking wasn’t

RabbitsRock · 20/04/2025 10:55

DH & I stayed in an old cottage on the edge of Dartmoor years ago & it had a very strange atmosphere, not helped by a weird sculpture in the lounge that gave me the willies! I’m not exactly psychic but can definitely sense “otherworldly ” activity shall we say. A sensitive soul. When we were leaving, I asked the owner if anything had ever gone on there & he laughingly asked DH if I was always like this!
We stayed in a cottage in Ireland for our honeymoon & it was lovely but I had to put away one of those old china dolls in our bedroom! I worked for a dental practice based in a 16th century former coach house & that building was definitely haunted. One room was always absolutely freezing & none of us liked to go in there. The whole town feels off actually. There’s a prison (now converted into a hotel) which you used to be able to tour - I couldn’t bare it! So oppressive & the sorrow & fear was palpable.

I have a friend who swore her house was haunted - old victorian house or something. i always thought it was a load of nonsense but she swears someone was watching over her at night. LOL

I lived in a very old cottage and felt uneasy at night in the spare room, didn’t like using the shower at night. My adult DD visited and after I moved out she told me the whole upstairs felt haunted. Neither of us have had those feelings in other houses we’ve lived in.

PowderRoom · 20/04/2025 11:15

As ever with these kinds of threads, the “ghosts’ are a combination of superstition, a cultural discomfort with death, anxiety in unfamiliar surroundings, especially at night, fear of the dark, sleep paralysis, priming by going on a ghost tour or going somewhere ‘haunted’, misinterpretation of the normal sounds of a building, electrical faults, pipes etc, genuine error, false memories, memories from imaginative childhood, and wishful thinking.

It could be that the child was cowering or acting suspicious because he was afraid of being treated badly or having his actions, expression, or presence misread as out of place, offensive, or violent. Are you white and/or middle-class looking?

The danger you felt might have been projected from the fear he felt.

As far as the thread goes: yes, I've experienced numerous hauntings but it would be outing to list them! A bad one was the house where guests dreamt they were not themselves, and one day I joked that it was Little Alice causing it. The television turned off with a loud and angry click. It was a rental and we only stayed a year.
