We were relatively lucky. We have private access to land with lakes and ponds and owned a rental by the beach. If we wanted a holiday without the dogs and frankly even as a dog owner I said it wasn’t actually a holiday if the dogs came 😅 they went to a family members for the entire time and we repaid the favour when they went away.

The dogs pretty much only came to the beach out of season when it was cooler and not as busy so more enjoyable for them and of course because it was ours we could leave them to pop to the pub or pool.

My last dog stressed so much when we left her to go on holiday that she pooed blood. We never left her again because it wasn't fair on her.

My BILs both have cats so the dog can't go there. My MIL wouldn't look after any let longer than a couple of hours. My parents would but their dog got attacked by an out of control dog, nearly died and unsurprisingly became quite dog reactive. And I don't trust my sister to look after herself so she's out.

So, dog came with us. She was always impeccably behaved and if she was having a moment we'd take her out of wherever. I've also done that with DD, much like a PP I will always remember carting her out under my arm screeching. Dog usually better behaved than most kids I've met tbh.

Sometimes, dogs can't be left. And as owners we've made a commitment by bringing them into our families.

Not really all of a sudden is it. Stop going to restaurants if you don’t like it.

Or stop taking dogs?! Humans get preference over dogs in human eating establishments.

Why would people stop taking dogs into places were the owners of the business welcome dogs?

If dogs are allowed then nothing wrong is happening.

Because we are a dirty nation. Most people do not remove shoes the moment they come into the house - and refer to others who do it as 'ethnic'. Very strange. People do not wash their hands before they sit down to eat in a restaurant - in they come from the dirty outside and eagerly start pawing the bread basket, etc. Hospital visitors are not offered plastic shoe covers - remember, perish the thought net zero is not on track for the NHS, ward doctors walk around the ward in outdoor shoes, as do nurses and auxiliaries, who, when changing patients' beds, routinely drag bed linen on the floor when changing it (short nurses and auxiliaries). A regular occurrence - when on the train I observe how people take their shoes off and walk the length of the carriage to the toilet (!!!!!) in their socks. Toddlers crawl on floors in shops and airports. Dogs with their dirty arses sit on fabric-upholstered sofas, cats go outside for a shit and bird massacre and come back in to have a nap on the pillow (awww, so sweet). Teachers don't tell pupils to wash their hands before lunch, etc. etc. Frankly, dogs in cafes are the least of our hygiene worries - I am frankly surprised we have not all succumbed to non-stop diarrhoea.

As small kids, me and my sister were sat outside the pub with coke and crisps whilst my dog got drunk inside with the dog.
People also used to leave babies in pushchairs outside of shops.

We lived opposite a pub, my family never went in. DGF went to the British Legion for half a pint on a Sunday late morning then home in time for lunch cooked by DGM. We never, ever went, it wasn't considered suitable children.

I don’t mind it as long as they are well trained.

But just as if your child is kicking off if your dog is barking at everyone who goes past then please take them out.

we went out for a meal last week and there was a lovely dog at a table nearby, happily sat not creating any issues. Another couple came in with two dogs who spent 10 minutes barking at the other dog (who did little more than raise his head!). In the end the owner of the well behaved dog ended up taking him out which was unfair on her but she understandably didn’t want other diners disturbed.

My favourite farm shop allows dogs. I don't mind those that are well behaved, but there have been instance of dogs piddling on the floor. Yeuch.

Dogs, unless service dogs should not be allowed in restaurants ..
Constantly in shops aswel , I have a dog , so I like dogs & she stays indoors with us , hairs go everywhere & that’s a fact .
Inside in restaurants, where hair could easily go into food , is unhygienic & disgusting, especially when a dog is shedding..🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you for your consideration.
you understand that hair goes everywhere.

Unfortunately, no matter what you do or don't like, humans, and children, have rights that your dogs don't have. They are not equivalent and they are not going to be.

Humans, even children, don't have any right to be in a restaurant or cafe. The owner of the establishment can decide on their clientèle.

Exactly
Because at the end of the day they are dogs, animals, and behave as such.

Except in restaurants that specifically say they welcome dogs. In those places dogs get preference over humans that don't like dogs. By decree of the owner who has the right to decide.

Absolute rubbish. Nobody asks through highsteets with dogs off leads. You’d be terrified they’d end up under a car or lost. Never seen one off a lead.

Not rubbish at all. Why on earth would I make that up? The town is mostly an area without cars except delivery vans so traffic isn’t too much of a concern. But it’s still a pain for my client when they’re off the lead and he gets very nervous. (I say this as a dog owner, but I wouldn’t dream of letting my dog off the lead in a town).

Frankly? The vast majority of dogs are WAY nicer than you. If I had an arsehole dog I wouldn’t take it out. Perhaps apply the same to yourself.

People aren't taking dogs everywhere. Only the places that they're welcome. There's plenty of places they aren't.

Either accept the place you want to go welcomes dogs or choose a different place from the very long list of places that dogs aren't.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/04/2025 19:54

As for allergies and phobias - serious, ie life threatening allergies to dogs are really really rare.

However they are also a 'you' problem, not an 'everyone elses problem' - thats blunt and I realise lots of people won't like it at all, but thats the truth of it.

If everyone had to behave in a way that could not possibly trigger someones allergy or phobia, given the number of things that could trigger either, no one would be able to go out or do anything.

I say this as someone with a couple of allergies (albeit relatively easy to avoid) and a huge phobia of wasps (seriously, I will get out of my wheelchair and run and I can't walk so this involves me splatting to the floor, it is that severe.) So it isn't as if I have no experience of negotiating life out in public with allergies/phobias!

TaggieO · 19/04/2025 19:54

Oh goody. Another one of these. It’s been at least 45 minutes since the last time someone complained 🙄
