The 1990s

@2025mustbebetter I did laugh, but agree somewhat 🙂

PsychoHotSauce · 18/04/2025 13:30

Self-employment. The romanticized version is choose your hours, be your own boss/don't answer to a shitty boss, set your own rates. All technically true but the reality is rather different!

MissyB1 · 18/04/2025 13:30

Relocating to New Zealand.

Hapagirl48 · 18/04/2025 13:31

Camping.

CrazyCatMam · 18/04/2025 13:34

Forever home / fixer upper / reno.

More like money drain / stress / dust.

Social media has a lot to answer for.

TariffPenguin · 18/04/2025 13:34

Boarding school. Don't tell me you loved it I don't care, it's child abuse

sodabreadjam · 18/04/2025 13:34

Weddings. Cost too much and go on too long. Expectations are too high.

OhWhistle · 18/04/2025 13:34

Witchcraft

pictoosh · 18/04/2025 13:34

The significance of a collar and tie as an indicator of decency.
"It's ever so smart."
Any old cunt can wear one...and frequently do.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/04/2025 13:35

Country life/farming. Less than bucolic and more about working on weekends and Bank Holidays, whatever the weather.

Ted27 · 18/04/2025 13:35

Adoption and fostering

BritishFoodFan · 18/04/2025 13:35

You've changed your thread title OP, naughty!

My post now makes no sense, I have never had an engagement ring or proposal because I spoke to my husband about getting married as an equal adult.

But people should definitely stop romanticising romance!

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/04/2025 13:35

1990s was great for us.

Heard on the radio, LBC I think, yesterday that 70 is the new 50 and that we should all carry on working.

Er, no 🤣

Bestbefore2030 · 18/04/2025 13:35

Schooldays are the happiest days of your life.

TariffPenguin · 18/04/2025 13:35

A blow dry and colour. (Mythical status on mumsnet)
Just cold (the wet hair) and long.

Arniesaxe · 18/04/2025 13:28

To be fair I don't think people romanticise thar?

I agree totally. I remember being a teenager and smothering myself in vaseline before bed to stay warm.

What? Didn’t it make the bed slimey?

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 18/04/2025 13:35

Meeting/working with famous people. After the first few minutes, they're just people.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 18/04/2025 13:36

Mcdonalds

Being drunk (which I plan to do tonight)

Having a garden

pictoosh · 18/04/2025 13:36

Christmas as depicted on social media and adverts.

I'd love it if there was a national call to dial the whole thing the fuck down.

SendBooksAndTea · 18/04/2025 13:36

I disagree, I love being surrounded by countryside, there's so much to see and do, it's like living a dream.

For me it would be the 'long holidays, short hours' that teachers/teaching assistants etc apparently get. Really not the reality at all.

Buying a new build home, often none of it stays perfect for long even if it looks good and the guarantees don't always cover everything.

sodabreadjam · 18/04/2025 13:36

And hen dos - they seem to cause so much grief according to the threads on Mumsnet.

ToWhitToWhoo · 18/04/2025 13:36

The Good Old Days. As I always say, 'Things ain't what they used to be- and they never were!'
