To think I can't be the only person who doesn't know a single trans person

Seriously.

The news is full of people worrying about how the SC ruling will affect people who identify as trans.

Where are they? Not in my office (large organisation), my family or social groups. I don't come across any in the village where I live or when I go into town.

DD is at university and doesn't know any trans people.

Surely, I can't be the only one?

I got to page 3 of this thread. Christ it's bleak.

My boss and my GP are trans, as is a friend. They all pass in different ways to differing extents. Their aspired level of 'femininity' differs, as does mine and that of many cis women I know.

Who gives a flying fuck? None of them are doing harm. In fact the one other thing they have in common is that they're highly successful in sex-nonspecific jobs that help others (GP, legal aid lawyer, Psych nurse). None of them are motivated to do these jobs by a desire to 'infiltrate' anything. They're highly intilligent, committed, hard working and self aware people. They're probably all frightened to go to work tomorrow.

I don't think the supreme court judgement was wrong per se. It takes pains to recognise the rights of trans people. My major concern was that the ignorant anti-trans corner of the internet would be emboldened by it. This thread proves my fears to be correct.

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 18/04/2025 01:51

I have two friends who are trans men. Had to be told by both of them as I never would have been able to tell otherwise.

CornishMade · 18/04/2025 01:52

I know 5 trans people from different areas and years of my life, and I'm a 'regular joe' ie not in any way associated with those communities.

I don’t know where these schools are that have all these trans kids either. I’m a teacher with many teacher friends and we were discussing the other day after all the news headlines that not one of us has taught a trans child and none of us knew any other teachers who have. Maybe a really dense population of trans people in certain areas?

There are 3 in ds year in a small middle school in a rural area. The school decided to have an assembly to explain to the other kids why their classmates suddenly had different names.

Really surprised you haven't encountered any.

glittereyelash · 18/04/2025 01:52

I've met loads through work but none outside of work.

When you say your friend is a psych nurse, I very much hope their patients aren't expected to pretend they are their chosen sex, because that would be abusing their position.

Chickensky · 18/04/2025 01:57

I have also men who were presenting as a woman at work twice.

Panjandrum123 · 18/04/2025 02:06

Am glad biological women have been recognised, sad it had to go to court to get this recognition which should be self-evident.

I don’t care what gender people want to identify as, if it helps them live their best life living as the opposite sex, crack on. But since I saw Jordan Grey, someone presenting as a woman, strip off on the revival of Saturday Night Live to reveal pert breasts and a penis, I can’t get past this dissonance, biological women don’t have penises.

Totallymessed · 18/04/2025 02:15

And it's interesting how your friends might be "frightened to go into work tomorrow". Yet it sounds like they are all in positions of power over others. I'm sure they'll all be absolutely fine. I hope the people who have no choice but to be treated by them are fine, I suspect possibly not.

Notsosure1 · 18/04/2025 02:30

VioletSpeedwell · 17/04/2025 23:03

Are you trying to suggest they don’t exist?

Not at all. I'm just amazed at the impact they've had when they are so few in number.

In 2021, approximately 3.7% of the UK identified as Black. They make up a tiny proportion of the population but would you not say they have made an impact? You don’t necessarily have to belong to a specific group that is large in numbers to have an impact on society.

That’s interesting! I’m in quite a small school to be fair but within a big city.

Remaker · 18/04/2025 03:02

I don’t personally know any my age. My friend works in a very progressive religious charity and she works with two trans people- one FTM, one MTF.

But three of my friends have trans children. One is MTF, one FTM. The third friend has three kids and two of them are trans (one MTF, one FTM) A 4th friend’s DD was trans for a couple of years but then desisted around age 14. Every single one of those kids is autistic.

WheresTheLambSauce · 18/04/2025 03:05

A number of friends are, as well as a few others I've interacted with in my local community. They just want to get on with life without too much grief, like everyone else.

KrisAkabusi · 17/04/2025 23:03

How do you know? Unless you see them naked, you can't tell with a lot of people.

You can always tell.

notatinydancer · 18/04/2025 03:55

I know one. Looks like a man in a dress , hair band on bald head.
See lots through work.

Yellowsunbeams · 18/04/2025 04:01

I know several trans people. They would absolutely pass. They are both in professional jobs. They have similar age partners and are very low key. I know one in particular would never use a gym change room to avoid making others feel uncomfortable and they are not keen to advertise their trans status either. I suspect the other follows the same approach. It is very unfortunate that a group are being demonised. Having said that they do think the sporting thing is unfair where not very successful male athletes parachute into female events.

AncientAndModern1 · 18/04/2025 04:03

I would refuse to be treated by a male doctor or nurse larping as female. Who wants to be treated by a fetishist or mentally ill person who demands patients ignore the evidence of their own eyes? Men can’t be women and you’d think a medical professional would know that if anyone does. Imagine trying to discuss pregnancy, gynae issues or menopause with a bloke pretending be a woman? I can’t think anything more uncomfortable.

LookingAtYouLookingAtMe · 18/04/2025 04:04

I know 3 through past work. My children know LOTS through school and uni. If you have young people in your life, I’m surprised you don’t know any OP. We used to live next door to someone with 2 trans children. 2 of their nephews were also trans. 🙄 Social contagion is frightening.

None of them pass.

FlakyCritic · 18/04/2025 04:10

KrisAkabusi · 17/04/2025 23:09

You're wrong. As someone that actually knows a couple of trans people, it isn't always as simple as you think. There's one in particular, I knew for years before being told. I am 100 percent certain that the vast majority of people that know them are not aware.

Males (transwomen) are easy to tell, because they still look so very male. But females (transmen) are harder to tell.

blubberball · 18/04/2025 04:11

I know one teenager born female, but identifies as male. Changed their name and look slightly, but no life changing surgery as of yet. I know one other teenager born female, kept their name but wore "boys" clothes sometimes and identified as gender fluid. I don't know if they still do.

I know one other adult born female, but identifies as male and uses a male name. Had no surgery as of yet, but wanted to use the male toilets at work. Why anyone would voluntarily use those toilets I don't know. I worked in a very blokey bloke bloke environment, and those toilets stank just walking past I would have to hold my breath. The ladies toilets upstairs were always nice and clean.

notatinydancer · 18/04/2025 03:53

You can always tell.

You can. In photos, with the right lighting etc, it’s not always as obvious, but seem them in the flesh, see them move etc, you can tell.

The impact of this ideology of autistic kids is frightening. 😔

Transwomen are male. You'd have to be pretty dumb to think slapping the label 'trans' on a male makes him no longer a man. Trans people are not a third sex you know.

AncientAndModern1 · 18/04/2025 04:20

It is utterly bleak that so many children - particularly vulnerable autistic children - are being influenced into rejecting who they are.

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 17/04/2025 23:14

Oh, here we go.
Yeah, you're right, a real woman would never go out in awful clothes and have silly looking hair.
As real women know how to "lady" properly. 🙄 Biscuit
It's always women who aren't trans who get hurt by so called "gender critical" people as well - with all this policing/deciding what a real woman should look like, whether by statements like this comment, or "we can always tell", which is a load of shite.

Do you honestly think a real woman would wear heavy makeup to do farm work? Come on! They are so stereotypically awkward that they feel they have to dress feminine even when it's not appropriate. Even when you see transwomen athletes, they're all wearing makeup and necklaces and big earrings in races. The other actual women are not.

And no, it's not gender critical women who hurt other women, it's trans activists who put males in female spaces that causes a level of high alert that we hadn't had before. Stop gaslighting and DARVOing females. That is solely the fault of TRAs/MRAs that started this.
