To report this as benefit fraud

A relative is claiming benefits, can’t work due to health but is one of those who is always complaining about something wrong with her but is always able to do the things she wants to do. Can holiday abroad, always down the gym, etc. When she was working she was always making complaints against employers- one of life’s victims.

She sold a property a couple of years ago and has squirrelled about £40k away through investments. I think has got her mother to do this for her.

I’m so fed up of seeing people like her take the piss. I 100% support a welfare system and it really pisses me off to see it abused like this. And meanwhile we are working our arses off and not able to afford the foreign travel and gym memberships.

I’m so tempted to report her secret savings to DWP.

Well, are you going to report him or just bitch about him on MN?

All suspicion of fraud ( not just benefits ) should be reported and no one should be made to feel guilty about that

You are just trying to guilt trip

Not at all. I have outlined what can happen to people who are investigated and asking whether you want that on your conscience if it turns out you have reported someone who has done absolutely nothing wrong. Reporting an innocent person is not a victimless action, and people need to be very aware of that. And if they report, especially out of envy and without being in possession of all the facts, and they turn out to be wrong and their victim is put through hell, then they absolutely should feel deeply, grovellingly guilty and ashamed.

Hastentoadd · 15/04/2025 19:17

ShanghaiDiva · 15/04/2025 19:13

yes, those of us who have raised issues are angry because we are also fraudsters. Nothing to do with the backtracking of comments regarding pip or the op determining whether the ‘relative’ is able to work or not.

No one has accused you of being fraudster but you seem to be quite against anyone reporting suspicion of fraud

All suspect fraudulent behaviour should be reported, why would anyone have an issue with that

uncomfortablydumb60 · 15/04/2025 19:17

So… You don’t actually know what she’s claiming and so have no idea if she’s claiming fraudently???

spends a lot of time at the gym
The OP knows her well so would have mentioned if she had some Physical disability
No harm in reporting suspicious behaviour, it can be investigated and if she is actually entitled the all is fine

Oh my god

you seriously need to educate yourself on the many complex disabilities that exist and how they effect people

many severe disabilities allow people to use the gym, even everyday, in fact make them better/improve their health condition

people seem to think all disabled is just paralyzed in wheelchair

even then my gym is full of people in wheelchairs/aids, with carers etc

paralympics exist, does that mean they are not disabled

youre being very ignorant

The cheeky old bastard. I bet he’s a Tory immigrant who came here and codded he can’t work yet simultaneously paid into a pension and national insurance.

Do us all a favour and put his windows in.

No, she has made it very clear that she is very anti fraud which everyone should be…..where does jealousy come into it?

Are you not anti fraud?

The jealousy can be seen in the opening post - I work my arse off but can’t afford the gym. Ooh I have a good mind to report her.
OP is not some crusading anti benefit fraud superhero. It all comes down to the same thing- someone appears to have something I don’t and it’s not fair.

It’s not fair.
It’s not fair if you claim something you’re not entitled to.
It’s not fair to take money from others that you’re not entitled to.

Not against it all. In fact if you look through my posts you will see on numerous occasions I have advised the OP to report and questioned why she needs validation from mumsnet.

No I don’t think it is the op is full of assumptions and is contributing to a narrative that disabled people can’t do certain things she doesn’t even know what the person suffers from but is still declaring that she knows she can’t work

I don’t know if she qualifies for pip. She’s always been one of those people who has a lot of moans but no diagnosis. But she always presents as very able to do everything that I do, she’s never struggled to keep up.

That doesn’t matter,
PIP is about the limitations you have in your daily life, not your diagnosis.

To qualify for health related UC support, you need to have been evaluated. Not easy.
She migut be on ESA which doesn’t require you to have savings under £6/16k.
She might have used the money to repay her mortgage/do essential repairs to her house etc…. All of which is allowed under UC conditions. You have 1 year to do so.

I can't imagine how he hides a private pension. If that comes to light he'll have to pay back his pension credit and any tax he owes.

This is so wrong though.
Irrespective of age, if he’s got a decent income he shouldn’t be claiming what’s not his. There are other families struggling on the bones of their arse while some abuse the system.
Being 82 is no excuse.

That’s literally the definition of jealousy. “Resentment at the perceived advantage of another.”

well you said yourself you didn’t know if she was claiming pip so it’s a reasonable comment.
you seem a little defensive, bordering on rude

DogPawsMud · 15/04/2025 19:23

In the real world most people don’t suppprt fraud. Of any type, including defrauding the benefits system (= tax payers = all of us).
On MN there is a weird dissonance on this subject. I don’t know why. But MN is not the real world.

pointythings · 15/04/2025 19:23

Hastentoadd · 15/04/2025 19:19

No, I am suggesting that they should consider all the potential consequences. Which is something everyone should do before taking drastic action. It's common sense and basic decency.

You on the other hand seem keen to believe that people with physical ill health and disabilities cannot possibly go to the gym, which shows an astonishing level of ignorance. Your advice on this thread is therefore of limited usefulness.
