What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Also the fact that 90% of the population appear to be men none of whom seem to speak English. Any women around are covered up and scuttling around with their eyes to the floor like something in the handmaidens tale.

How do people ‘appear’ to speak no English? 90% is very precise. Did you approach 100 people?

We drove through Macclesfield recently and I felt like I was being smothered and was going to die, it was so grim and oppressive, I’m no stranger to mill towns but it was hideous. DD had bought us a spa break at Shrigley hall and I couldn’t wait to get out of the place, really gloomy.
I made DH drive the other way towards Manchester when we left, rather than go back home via Macclesfield.
Another place I really hated was Urqhart Castle on Loch ness, it felt evil, no other word for it.

jollygoose · 14/04/2025 20:21

Dungeness gives me the creeps it's just so bleak

Bonietheretriever · 14/04/2025 20:21

Alford in Lincolnshire

The North

I think you mean ooop north - honestly it’s not that bad but you do need a big coat on. 🤣

Do you mean the German underground hospital on Guernsey or the war tunnels on Jersey? Either way, I would expect there to be an odd vibe because of what happened there.

The German Underground Hospital in Jersey was re-branded as the Jersey War Tunnels. I remember going as a young teen - I agree it has a disturbing atmosphere.

Wintersgirl · 14/04/2025 20:22

The Cannock Chase is quite creepy...

LBFseBrom · 14/04/2025 20:23

Boscastle, Battle and Bodmin Gaol.

East Croydon is ok, South is a bit rough

South Croydon isn’t too bad. The further south you go the better it gets. Purley is ok, Coulsdon and Kenley, Sanderstead are really quite decent.

The bit to avoid is around west Croydon station, going north towards Thornton Heath.

Leicester. It’s a shame because I liked the actual look of the town, the architecture especially. But the fact that there were bars on the windows of every single shop just added to the sense that it was about to kick off at any moment and a feeling of general unwelcome.

Agree, I went there for work recently, and stayed in the city centre. I can’t put my finger on why exactly I felt uncomfortable but I really did. From the train station, then the taxi to the hotel it just felt off, a weird vibe that I’ve only ever felt in one other place - Croydon. Even during the day, walking to find something to eat, I felt really on edge and decided I wasn’t going to go out at night so just stayed in my hotel.

Laugharne. So racist it was almost unbelievable. Was with mixed race friend and we were stared at all day with a really aggressive feel to the staring. Bloke in the pub told us it was because my friend is black and they thought we were lesbians. Exhausting and scary. Left after a day and went to Tenby, no issues whatsoever, lovely place.

Right then, the Creature.

I've posted about it before, on the Goatman threads (2022!)

We had a very strange one once, near Stenying. Wooded road, driving along. About to turn right, into a different road. At the road junction ahead, we saw what looked like a person standing on the left. It was like a 2D cutout of black shadow. Thin and tall, with clear long legs and arms, but in proportion. We indicated to go right, and the thing crossed the road, with one leg reaching to the other side, elongating, then the body and other leg followed over. As we left the original road, we then couldn't see it on the right side of the original road, or on the left of our new road. It was sodding creepy, the way it moved, and that there was no detail to is, just a black cut out. We did wonder if it was trying to get onto the car, as when it crossed, we would have been driving right over it, if we hadn't left that road. Crossroads were often chosen as placed to bury those outside societal norms.

Have you watched the new uncanny episodes on bbc? There’s a similar story from a man who was stalked by a black creature similar description for years.

Did you see the Shadowman episode of Uncanny (the TV show)? V similar description. Series 2 ep 3 on iPlayer.

Yes! I just posted about this before seeing your post!

SeaUrchinHat · 14/04/2025 20:27

Cong in County Mayo. Went to a pub and it felt like we’d stepped into a scene from The Wicker Man. We’d planned to stay a couple of days but left the next morning.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/04/2025 20:28

@HeartandSeoul as another one in Bath I don’t get it either. But in fairness it’s much nicer on a nice day - as is anywhere I guess. It doesn’t have lots of indoor stuff to do if you hit on a shit rainy windy day ! I’ve never found it remotely unfriendly either- maybe it’s just one of those places that’s better to live than visit -plenty clearly don’t feel weird about it looking at our house prices and demand

I need to see this, I love that sort of stuff...

Saddleworth Moor always creeps me the hell out. Even if it wasn't for the history it's just so quiet and eerie despite being right at the side of the motorway.

Honestly, watch them, they’re great! The podcasts are good too :)

Strange what weirds people out, I find Cannock chase really peaceful, I love wandering around the war Cemetery and the memorial to the German Airship crew.
We lived in Germany for years when DH was in the RAF, we used to walk in the local woods and once found a Nazi cemetery with beautifully tended graves. When we went back we couldn’t ever find it again.

I feel quite weirded out by Suffolk/ Norfolk and how flat it is. Not that it isn’t nice but it’s just so flat!

Glad it's not just me that gets weirded out by flatness! It feels like you could fall of the edge of the earth or something, to me anyway. (I'm not a Flat Earther, for the record 😆 just gives me that sort of feeling even though it's illogical.)

I booked a week's holiday with dd a couple of years ago in Hastings. Was a very long, unpleasant drive in the rain and dark to get there. The next day we went around the town and thought "oh my god what have we done?!". But the weather was lovely, the flat we were staying in was great, just opposite the main beach in Hastings. We walked to St Leonard's and went into Hastings and into Old Hastings several times and I ended up really liking it and want to go back 😁!

It did help that it was our first trip after the pandemic, dd is an adult and it was just after the summer holidays.

I also love Selfridges, Liverpool and Polperro. ☺️

As I was trying to collect for charity I probably approached nearer 500 people over several days.
Im sure there will be a statistician on MN who will be able to say if this is statistically significant.

The centre of Bolton when all the spiced-up zombies are out can be grim. I took some foreign students there once and they couldn't believe the place.

The centre of Bury isn't much better - it appears to be comprised entirely of vape shops and the people just look defeated, even the ones not on spice.

All of Rochdale.

All of Wigan.

Take it you’ve never been to Bacup??? Home of brassic lol!!! One of the strangest places in England. Apparently the league of gentlemen when looking for filming locations wanted somewhere weird. They came to Bacup and found it too weird and only filmed a little bit. We are also famed for Juliet Bravo and I believe an episode of hetty wainthrop was filmed here. Walking into any of our local drinking establishments highly resembles the pub scene in “American werwolf in London”, if you’re not local that is. Personally I love the place.

Wintersgirl · 14/04/2025 20:37

Cornworthy in South Devon, it had a reputation for having a Witches coven, not sure if it was just cobblers but when I was in my 20s myself and a friend knew of the villages repuation so we decided to take a drive through one evening, not late but about 8.30 and every single person came to the window to watch us drive through, it was so spooky, needless to say we didn't hang about!

Bookloveruk · 14/04/2025 20:38

My view is due to a lot of people who lives there act very superior, very dismissive of local places (esp Leeds). It’s a sought after place, very beautiful but the residents pull it down.
