What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

As I was trying to collect for charity I probably approached nearer 500 people over several days.
Im sure there will be a statistician on MN who will be able to say if this is statistically significant.

Here you go. 30% of the population in Leicester do not speak English as their main language. Some of that 30%, no doubt, will speak English. But even if absolutely none of them do, that’s very different from 90% of the population not speaking any English.

Imber. The abandoned village on Salisbury plain. Only open once a year for the church. Truly eerie.

Lonelycrab · 14/04/2025 20:40

Orkney islands have a strange energy too from the one time I’ve visited.

You are a tourist: very welcome!

You actually want to stay here…?
hmm let’s consult the pitch fork gang and see if they decide to burn your house down or not….

I will, thanks!

Cong in County Mayo. Went to a pub and it felt like we’d stepped into a scene from The Wicker Man. We’d planned to stay a couple of days but left the next morning.

Allow me to be the first person to point out that Mayo is not in the UK.

Also, I’m sure quite a lot of people will pretend not to speak English if they don’t want to be stopped in the street. I’ve been known to do it, myself.

With the exception of Lincoln - the whole of Lincolnshire for me - flat, dull and always feels ‘shut’.
Forest of Dean - just weird and does give off vibes

north wales- some lovely scenery but again to me feels weird and has odd vibes

Goathland, creepy place. And the drive 'over the tops' from Goathland to Whitby. Can't even put it into words so this won't make any sense, but it feels to me like the air is buzzing and incredibly oppressive, like when you were a kid and you'd stand under a pylon and hear/feel that electrical buzzing sensation. Creeped me out.

I stayed at Goathland for a couple of weeks a few years ago, and quite liked it, and the general area. And I loved the drive into Whitby.

There have been several places mentioned on here that I like: Lewes, Dungeness, Tavistock, Masham, Bridport, Fowey, Chester.

Maybe it's me that's weird...

The Shell Grotto in Margate. I don't know wtf happened there but I feel it's likely it included black magic and torture 😬.
Could not wait to get out.

I agree! also Margate itself, Brighton, amd Blackpool. Those kind of heritage seaside towns that have become run down can be quite scary.
also Tower of London was creepy as hell for obvious reasons
Had an uncomfortable feeling on holiday visiting Castle Drogo, a creepily named National Trust house, made of heavy granite and moody moorland all round. Found later it has a reputation for creepiness. Lots of the small moorland towns in Devon and Yorkshire had that slightly off vibe for me. With the all fog and the remoteness.

LondonFox · 14/04/2025 20:44

Northampton central bus station and 100m radius around it.
Hastings. It's Trainspotting but by the muddy seaside.
And I am not anti drugs 🤣

Portland is supposed to be quite weird - rumours of inbreeding etc. - prbably exaggerated,

I hated Portland. Felt a weird dark vibe there. Surprised nobody has mentioned Weston-Super-Mare. Bleak and creepy. Agree with others on Bristol (Temple Meads in particular). Lots of bits of Jersey gave bad vibes to me. I like Machynlleth (didn't know about the child murder) but stayed in a converted chapel near there last year and OMG it freaked me the hell out. There was even a Bible still open on a pulpit. Felt chilled to my core and couldn't wait to leave #shivers

The North

Ha, Northerner here what's the problem we don't bite between meals!
Just out of interest what's your definition of North? My son and I were debating this the other day. Someone at his uni says north of Newcastle, Someone said north of Leicester and Someone said north of Watford. 😊

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 14/04/2025 20:47

St Andrews. It's beautiful. It makes me feel claustrophobic.

Dearg · 14/04/2025 20:50

Isle of Mull. Could not wait to get off it.

I was fine on the whale watching trip we took ( saw so,Evansville, so,e jellyfish, no whales) But as soon as we landed in Tobermory, there it was again. Very oppressive.

No offence but I hope no one answers this, we'll be here all bloody night arguing the toss of where the South ends and the North begins! Im just enjoying the creepy stories...

RJ2023 · 14/04/2025 20:52

Durdle Door in Dorest... Just why would anyone go there? It's a boring bit of rock in the middle of nowhere that everyone obsesses about! I still remember when I was about 6 years old in the 1980s falling on the chalk path and taking all the skin off my legs and arms. Still traumatised to this day and would never go back!

OrangeAndPistachio · 14/04/2025 20:53

@mrsbojangles2 I agree on Portland. We went there as a group in my uni days and the locals were staring at my black friend constantly. It felt very unwelcoming. I found the place odd in general too , we went to a pub with a restaurant and were told off for taking a seat and waiting to order to our food. Apparently we weren't allowed to sit until our food was ready which was weird. We couldn't wait to leave , it felt like we'd stepped back in time for the weekend.

TwoRobins · 14/04/2025 20:55

gingerandsmall · 14/04/2025 12:44

Portmerion. Appeared deserted but felt like we were being watched. I haven't seen The Prisoner so that didn't account for it.

That's so odd you should say that! I really quite liked it when I went but now you mention it, YES, I did feel like we were being watched. I never saw The Prisoner either.

FrustratedC0ffeeDrinker · 14/04/2025 20:55

Went on a random day trip last year to Royal Tunbridge Wells. Whilst I appreciated the architecture, I really don’t feel any desire to ever go back. I remember feeling a bit claustrophobic. Perhaps a bit like The Prisoner tv series filmed in Portmeirion. My partner really like the place though.

Floogal · 14/04/2025 20:56

The Westgate multistorey car park in Oxford. Creepy concrete nightmare with hiding spots for anyone sinister. It doesn't help that there was an Inspector Morse murder there. Thankfully, it was demolished a few years ago.

VivienneDelacroix · 14/04/2025 20:56

Bedford. I had no expectations it all of it, just thought we'd pop into town when we were passing. It just felt really "off". We zoomed around the town centre and back into the car so quickly - felt like I had to avoid eye contact with everyone.

Also I agree about Liverpool - ex's family were from there and they were really proud Liverpudlians (is there any other sort) so I really wanted to enjoy it, but I just felt it to be really threatening and couldn't feel comfortable anywhere.

TwoRobins · 14/04/2025 20:56

Croydon! Ugh! I couldn't wait to get out.

Bernardtheseal · 14/04/2025 20:57

Porthcurno in Cornwall. I went to go to the Minack Theatre. Beautiful place but felt like I was going to fall off the end of the world and I couldn’t wait to get away.
Also the Cambridgeshire Fens. I have to drive across the fens quite frequently with work and it somehow makes me feel unsafe. I can’t explain it.

HubbleBubbles · 14/04/2025 20:58

Gibraltar- all those monkeys causing chaos, weird British shops that don't exist any more (Woolworths) , like a high street from the 70s/ 80s , unfriendly ex-pats, and that rock looming over everything. - gave me the shivers.
