What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Gloucester. Was only in the city for a couple of hours but felt relieved to leave.

mindingmyown37 · 14/04/2025 23:04

Goldstone village is a bit of an eerie one too… visited back in primary school, so 98/99, it comes across as a perfect little town, think goodnight mr Tom, but I got some bad vibes and I was only 11. I still think about it now, some of the people we came across were creepy as hell…

Wintersgirl · 14/04/2025 23:05

Also Pluckley Kent, again that charged air and a feeling something was waiting

It's meant to be the most haunted village in England...or at least one of them
.

Bedknobsandhoovers · 14/04/2025 23:06

As a child Aldeborough. In particular the beach. Something spooked me. Nearly 60 years later I went back - I could sort of see why the 5 year old me was disturbed by it.

Now…. Eccles town centre, Fleetwood - all of it!

Lonelycrab · 14/04/2025 23:06

Fascinating thread.

Although I think by now pretty much everywhere in the entire UK jas been described as weirdGrin

ForeverPombear · 14/04/2025 23:06

Weybridge. I stayed there for two weeks and I was miserable and unsettled and just felt like something was off with the place.

Yeah. Creepy.

And @SinnerBoy , that phrase made me laugh so much - the people with the mismatched ears!

For me, the only place I felt really uncomfortable was Brighton. We were visiting London for the London to Brighton veteran car rally, so after we'd watched them depart, we got the train to Brighton. I was really expecting to love it, I'm vegetarian and a bit of an old hippy and from what I'd read it should have been just my type of place - relaxed, lots of veggie restaurants etc. Wow, I couldn't have been more wrong! We were only there for about 5 hours but I was so hyper-vigilant the whole time, it just had a really threatening atmosphere I thought.

I live in Brighton, the atmosphere is for the most part fantastic, even though it’s far to busy for me but them kind of events bring some weirdos to town. I hate the whole hustle and bustle of it, I also work in town so could do with less crowds

Magpie1976 · 14/04/2025 23:06

2 areas I’ve found made me feel uneasy/like there’s something creepy about them but not sure why:
the Colne Valley in Huddersfield, including villages such as Marsden
and
Kielder Water… once had a holiday there and felt a bit uncomfortable the whole time
anyone else found this?

Twilight7777 · 14/04/2025 23:07

Stoke on Trent. Grim.

Usernamenope · 14/04/2025 23:07

Burnley gave me a terribly sad lonely feeling, as if I would die there alone and no one would know (apologies if you live there and it's a great place really).

Birkenhead was odd. Just felt a bit empty and abandoned. Maybe I went on the wrong day!

Sadly, nowadays there is no right day to visit Birkenhead 🙁 (I live not too far from there)

Crikeyalmighty · 14/04/2025 23:08

@MonGrainDeSel my DH thinks so too

I don't want this thread to end, it's been interesting and fun....

Carlisle. So depressing. Everyone seemed so miserable and rude. We lived there for a year, couldn't wait to leave!

I think the locals have a frontier town mentality, and not welcoming to outsiders, the isolated location doesn’t help.

I know someone who moved there and ended up on anti depressants, she too only lasted 12 months…

Couchtattie · 14/04/2025 23:11

I agree with Camden. Almost too much energy and a feeling like things could kick off at any moment.

Personally really like Glasgow central.

Loch Lomond in winter is stunning but melancholic IMO. The mountains and stillness of the water is a bit eerie.

I find towns and cities less spooky than the countryside and the sea.

DemBonesDemBones · 14/04/2025 23:15

Sandhurst and a lot of surrounding towns. Makes me feel cold.

Catsandcheese · 14/04/2025 23:17

Sandhurst, really?
Why?

clickyteeclick · 14/04/2025 23:24

Skelmersdale. Sad, lonely and depressing. Just feel alone when I’ve been there.

Birmingham - city centre is rough… and this is coming from someone who works in Manchester City centre.

canthavethatonethen · 14/04/2025 23:30

We visited Skipton Castle when dd was a baby. She had the absolute blue murder screaming abdabs the whole way round. She never did anything remotely similar anywhere else, and this thread is making me wonder...

WhiteWriting · 14/04/2025 21:37

Yes - the massive Art Dec hotel had just been refurbished when we went - full of daytrippers in cagoules gawping in the foyer. Horrible drizzle and mist hanging over the town. Ate chips sitting in car watching morbidly obese tattooed women on motility scooters.

Depressing but in a fascinating way.

Sandhurst and a lot of surrounding towns. Makes me feel cold.

Sandhurst in Berkshire? think there is one in Kent too - I live in the Berkshire one and apart from being near Broadmoor in Crowthorne - it’s ok. I came on to say that some of Windsor Great Park makes me feel odd when I drive through, also one particular road just outside the park - ‘Drift Road’, unlit, dark and no path .. I avoid it !

NewBrightonEel · 14/04/2025 23:37

Flaybrick Cemetery in Birkenhead. I was cutting through there about 30 years ago and got a feeling of doom and everyone's mood changed as soon as we walked in the gate (including kids). It was really spooky. Found out a couple of years later it's supposed to be one of the most haunted places in the North West. Never went back.

doreeen · 14/04/2025 23:39

I echo Dungeness, was surprised that it’s actually really expensive to buy a home there. PP was accurate that it looks a bit post-apocalyptic. Ed Sheeran owns one of the houses there apparently.

MojoMoon · 14/04/2025 23:42

Rhyl in North Wales. Specifically Rhyl Fun Fair which I think may be haunted or cursed despite not believing ghosts or curses exist.

KissedTheBlarneyStone · 14/04/2025 23:42

Huddersfield, it’s the most depressing place I’ve ever been to.
