What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Savernake Forest near Marlborough has some dodgy juju apparently…

lazyarse123 · 14/04/2025 20:10

Oh I forgot about Mary King's Close, Edinburgh. It was very interesting but I couldn't wait to get out. I think I feel weirded out if I know incredibly sad things have happened there.

Bethnel Green is a typical shabby part of London but doesn't weird me out in any way - but the tube station does.
I always think of the WW2 tragedy of people dying there.
I don't use that tube station very often but on the rare time I do I always pause and think of what was essentially a freak accident.
Edit : for those who don't know the story....
In 1943 people were rushing to the tube to shelter from an air raid.
The station was actually unfinished but being used as a shelter. There was no handrail or decent lighting and it is believed a woman carrying her baby tripped and fell and it caused a domino effect behind her and 173 people died in the crush.
The irony was there wasn't actually an air raid. It was a false alarm.

Very tragic. There is a memorial there called Stairway to Heaven.

The estate belonging to the former MP Richard Drax. Family became rich off the slave/sugar trade. There are so many car accidents along that stretch of road and it’s always peppered with holes in the wall.

We pass that estate often and always have a guess how many holes are in the wall- it’s become a family tradition. They had a open garden day once it had nice grounds

Right then, the Creature.

I've posted about it before, on the Goatman threads (2022!)

We had a very strange one once, near Stenying. Wooded road, driving along. About to turn right, into a different road. At the road junction ahead, we saw what looked like a person standing on the left. It was like a 2D cutout of black shadow. Thin and tall, with clear long legs and arms, but in proportion. We indicated to go right, and the thing crossed the road, with one leg reaching to the other side, elongating, then the body and other leg followed over. As we left the original road, we then couldn't see it on the right side of the original road, or on the left of our new road. It was sodding creepy, the way it moved, and that there was no detail to is, just a black cut out. We did wonder if it was trying to get onto the car, as when it crossed, we would have been driving right over it, if we hadn't left that road. Crossroads were often chosen as placed to bury those outside societal norms.

Did you see the Shadowman episode of Uncanny (the TV show)? V similar description. Series 2 ep 3 on iPlayer.

And the somerset levels is my one. I do really like the area but it's just got an eerie feel to it. And all the pubs have a bowling alley for some reason! Happiest of memories of the area though 💓

That’s not a bowling alley, that’s pub skittles. Very traditional pub game, each pub has a team they play other pubs and have a skittle tea afterwards. Mostly consisting of cold roast potatoes and buffet.

One pub I used to play against the balls went outside to return back to you so on a wet night they were very damp.

The pub pays a teenager to be a “stick-er up-er” basically to sit at the end and put the skittles back. I’m

Exmouth town centre in the evening was awful. Had a horrible experience there where we couldn’t find our parked car. Lots of dodgy people about, quite unnerving.

East Croydon is ok, South is a bit rough

TheaBrandt1 · 14/04/2025 20:14

Deserted islands freak me out. We went to some off the west coast of Ireland. Boat dropped us for the day nothing there but a few houses. Was beautiful but relieved to get back on boat. Have watched too many murder mysteries!

Felt the same in the Gili islands. Seemed like paradise but was glad to leave. Felt like we were at the end of the world and about to drop off!

SwedishEdith · 14/04/2025 20:15

Newhaven. Thought it would be nice to mooch around before catching the ferry. It's not. I think lots of coastal ferry ports are bleak because they're designed for people to escape from. And then the locals seem like people living at the end of the line and unable to leave.

It's actually not that awful.
The town centre is struggling massively with loads of shops etc closed down plus lots of beggars and anti social behaviour.
But the suburban parts are nice. Public transport (ie the tram) is good.
2 train stations - one that can get you to central London in about 20 minutes.
There's some nice little places there with interesting history (ie the airport).
It's not really "weird".

Lonelycrab · 14/04/2025 20:15

If you come out of East Croydon station and turn left; it’s ok.

Liverpool feels very malevolent to me. I can't stand being near the Mersey, it makes me feel very uncomfortable.

I can understand this -
the majority of people would help you in a heartbeat but there’s definitely a threatening undercurrent.

Peterborough reminds me of something from a post-apocalyptic film. Sad because you can tell it was probably nice once.

Agreed. Beautiful architecture in places but horrible atmosphere. I hung around in the city centre recently waiting to collect my passport and it wasn’t nice.

Also, my home city of Nottingham. Used to have a nice feel to it, particularly in Hockley and Lace Market but now just feels dangerous.

I went back to Nottingham for the first time in 25 years back in the autumn and really liked it! We were students there. It felt properly buzzy and lively.

A National Trust property in Cornwall - Cotehele: I ventured into a bedroom at the top of the house, which was so dark it was almost black, and almost immediately my neck felt constricted, I was struggling to breathe and shivering, even though it was mid-summer and warm outside.

I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I remember! It made the news, any sightings of it since?

Crikeyalmighty · 14/04/2025 20:18

@YesHonestly it’s my original home town till I was30 - it’s truly like the Armageddon in the centre compared to when I lived there. Very sad to see and lots of aggressive royded up blokes too - suprisingly I think the edges have improved, I actually saw a couple of cafes and restaurants that looked quite pleasant and some actually quite pleasant new housing developments- in fact if I never ever had to go into the centre it wasn’t too bad .

Wintersgirl · 14/04/2025 20:20

A poster earlier mentioned Selsey and I have to agree...

Croydon and people there talking full volume about their sex lives in public.
