Most shops are just landfill waiting to happen.

I mean, all are to a point, but I’m talking about the non essential ones.

Our society is engineering its own collapse. We only need food, health, house basics and clothing. And I suppose, technology.

Fast fashion could go. Housing should just be the essentials.

My friend took me into a shop called sostrene grene. It was lovely, but nothing was essential. Most shops are like that.

The horse has bolted, but I wish we could limit the unnecessarily stuff and just have the basics. Im not talking Amish level, but there’s no need for all this waste. It would be so much better if only the essentials were produced.

At the point of production, it’s already basically landfill.

My dad just died. What am I to do with all his stuff? We took bags of stuff tovthe charity shop when my mum died but he liked being surrounded by what he was used to and still had all the ornaments, loads of China etc. I can't take it all. At the end of the day you do need some way of disposing of all your stuff. My adult daughter has special needs and buys random stuff all the time that she doesn't need. It's either the charity shop or the dump when we have a clear out.

Btw our local charity shop won't take hard backed books or cds.

I did say there were a few exceptions!

Yes, but we can't have shops waiting for people to die!

Seriously, it is a huge problem trying to get rid of what were well oved possessions. My dad was 91 and had travelled widely in the 50s and brought gorgeous things back.

But we have little room for it and tastes have changed.

I'm sure a lot of it could painstakingly be put on various shopping sites but I live hundreds of miles away and my brother just wants rid ASAP.

Not sure what your point is. It's fine to give stuff to charity shops after someone has died.

Agree, I've come to hate gifting. I wish birthdays and occasions didn't need it, and focused on presence instead. There are so many gifts bought half heartedly out of obligation. I'd much rather we only gifted when genuinely finding something we feel the person would like. No one wants mediocre bloody hand cream, shite wine etc.

I would like hand cream and shite wine! But not candle holders or embroidery sets, or bracelets, or cosmetic bags.
At least you can use hand cream and drink the wine, the wine bottle might slip out of your hand if you use too much cream, but that just makes it a challenge.

😂 But if it was one small tube of decent hand cream rather than one of those gift sets with three tubes of rubbish slippery stuff then your wine would be safe Grin

Other people's cast off tat is always welcome at our charity shop. Puts food in the cat's bowls and pays for neutering.
Except photo frames. Nobody wants photo frames. They aren't good gifts at all. They sit, in our shop, boxed, tagged and ignored.

I do like frames. Can use them to frame my own art bits.
I follow a page on FB about crap in charity shops and some people donate frames complete with photos of their family.

Needmorelego · 21/04/2025 14:54

I've always wanted to completely cover a wall with mismatched frames with random pictures in.
Unfortunately because I rent I'm not allowed to put pictures up 🙁
A lot of people rent and probably have the same issue. That's why no one wants picture frames.

@XenoBitch I love the Facebook group "crap in charity shops".
One person's crap can be another's treasure.

I often read this on MN. I don't live in the UK and rent, but I have pictures on my walls and always have had. No-one has ever told me I can't. How bleak it must be living in places with empty walls.

Needmorelego · 21/04/2025 21:20

@NattyTurtle59 it's usually a standard thing in the lease with private rental.
Depends how fussy your landlord is really. I don't actually know if ours would care but our flat is maintained by the estate agents and they moaned at us using blu tac on the wall 🙄
Anything that involves hammering nails in is a total no no.

There can be some horrifying things on there though 😂

I've been merrily hammering nails in for years in my private rentals! (well picture hook nails, not actual nails).

Do you always get your deposit back?
Or repaint before you leave.
We would be required to put the walls back to their original state (so no holes) so that means we do the work or the deposit pays for it for someone else to do it.
That's pretty standard for UK rental 🙁

My DB rents and is not allowed to put anything up. He does use the 3M hook things thought that say they don't leave marks. When he has an inspection, he hides all his pictures.

When I rented, there was blue tack on the walls that the land lord had painted over 😆

Yes I get my deposit back, and I certainly don't repaint before I leave. In my current flat I am mostly using the holes from previous tenants to hang my pictures!

Things must be a bit different where you live.
