Most shops are just landfill waiting to happen.

I mean, all are to a point, but I’m talking about the non essential ones.

Our society is engineering its own collapse. We only need food, health, house basics and clothing. And I suppose, technology.

Fast fashion could go. Housing should just be the essentials.

My friend took me into a shop called sostrene grene. It was lovely, but nothing was essential. Most shops are like that.

The horse has bolted, but I wish we could limit the unnecessarily stuff and just have the basics. Im not talking Amish level, but there’s no need for all this waste. It would be so much better if only the essentials were produced.

At the point of production, it’s already basically landfill.

My entitlement?

What do you mean? Or are you so privileged you can't see that some of us can't afford nice new things... we have to settle for the cheap things. We are still allowed to have new.

It is weird I am somehow to blame for the ills the planet suffers because I shop in Primark... yet if I buy a bundle of used Primark on Vinted, it is ok? Fucking mad.

I had better clothing when I was with my ex-partner. He was totally ashamed of Primark, Lidl etc. He would only shop in Waitrose for groceries, and places like All Saints for the basics. He was the breadwinner, and he bought my clothing. Enough of a backstory for you?

I literally don't care about what brand is on what I wear. I just want it to feel nice, fit well and be in my budget. Primark ticks those boxes for me (as does supermarket brand... I do like the leggings from Sainsburys too).

I might be on UC, but I am still entitled to things I like and that are new. Is that so hard to understand?

Jeeper's xeno you've had a rough old time of it on this thread.
It's so easy to go from a have to a have not in this country.
All it takes is the right set of bad circumstances to play out.

Yep, I went from a have to, to a have not.
It could happen to anyone on this thread. Stay humble.

Woah, @MyNameOrNot that‘s uncalled for. This is an abstract discussion not a pile on on Xeno!

So you would buy second hand underwear? I wouldn't.
I do not have the time or energy to be going round charity shops all day to find bobbly Primark clothing that is priced more than it is new.

So, please tell me where I am allowed to shop?
I used to have an awful online shopping addiction. Think 50 or so parcels each week. I had therapy and weaned myself off that. I very rarely shop online now. For me, cash is the way I budget. I shop in Primark because I like the basics, and it meets my needs. My body is covered up.

I am no snob. Can't afford to be one on UC.

I am happy with my choices. It seems you are not, and you feel the need to come on here and berate me for them. Why? It does not affect you at all.
I am comfortable, clothed, and it is within my budget. If you take umbrage with that, then you are the snob.

I certainly think the fast fashion companies ought to be taxed out of the market. Unnecessary rubbish.

Trump is doing some of that. Crazy times for the economy but I can’t help wondering if some of the Temu / Shein volumes reduce it would be a silver lining.

I wear new... from Primark lol and you call me a snob?
Fucking hell, do you even know what Primark is? it is not something you see on catwalks.
I have a lot of second hand clothing too. I make do and mend. Do you?

XenoBitch · 19/04/2025 23:36

@MyNameOrNot so again, where am I allowed to shop? I am waiting.
And then tell me why you are allowed to dictate that

They might start flooding other countries with more volume though.

Us spending money on imports worsens the trade deficit and increases the national debt.

They’d already do it if there was demand.

SnoozingFox · 20/04/2025 10:59

And that's the crux of it. There is the demand for this shite so companies will keep churning it out. So depressing.

They might drop their price if they have huge surplus due to not being able to sell in the US.

minipie · 20/04/2025 11:03

It’s our DD’s first Easter so I’ve got her a brilliant outfit, some props and of course eggs. I’ve also got a personalised sort of sign which says it’s her first Easter.

Just seen on another thread…. I despair

@MyNameOrNot

Your harrassment of that particular poster is appalling. Even after having a few of your posts deleted you have continued harrassing her. You may have some sensible points to make if they were made generally but you are coming across as a horrible bully. Not a good look.

Bluegreencat · 19/04/2025 18:09

Buying secondhand is great if you have the time and patience for it. In any case it’s only ethical because the person who bought it first has done the good deed of bothering to take it to the charity shop so you can buy it.
If you buy new and then wear it to the end of its useful life, sell it on Vinted or take it to the charity shop, surely that’s still a good thing to do too?

I'm not sure I agree that people who take stuff to charity shops have done a good deed. With a few exception e.g. books and maybe children's clothes, I feel if you buy something you should keep it and use it yourself. People often give to charity shops to make themselves feel better about buying so much but a lot of it will actually end up in a landfill.

My dad just died. What am I to do with all his stuff? We took bags of stuff tovthe charity shop when my mum died but he liked being surrounded by what he was used to and still had all the ornaments, loads of China etc. I can't take it all. At the end of the day you do need some way of disposing of all your stuff. My adult daughter has special needs and buys random stuff all the time that she doesn't need. It's either the charity shop or the dump when we have a clear out.

Btw our local charity shop won't take hard backed books or cds.

I think the PP was referring to people who justify their overconsumption to themselves by saying that it's OK because the stuff they have replaced has gone to the charity shop.
