To ask what I should eat for breakfast to combat constipation?

I normally eat Greek yogurt with walnuts and blueberries but I’m thinking too much dairy is probably contributing to my terrible constipation. Any recommendations?

im now in agony from a big purple haemorrhoid so im pretty desperate (hence the AIBU) ill eat anything as i have no appetite so willing to try anything

Prunes are good for constipation, or ask your local pharmacy for a recommendation.

faerietales · 12/04/2025 14:23

Black coffee

Friends1996 · 12/04/2025 14:24

Bran flakes with chopped dates on top usually help me! (you can get them already prepared in packs). Plenty of water, a hot strong coffee?

Pharmacy gave me lactolose which appears to be making things worse 😭

2 bowls of all bran. Breakfast of champions

TariffPenguin · 12/04/2025 14:26

Marks & Spencer Agen prunes. Firstly, they're delicious and secondly, they have very immediate effects.

caringcarer · 12/04/2025 14:26

Drink a glass of fresh orange juice with the bits in each day. Bran flakes with fruit.

Bushmillsbabe · 12/04/2025 14:26

Drink warm water with lemon juice before bed, and half an hour before you eat anything in the morning. I got badly constipated when pregnant and the midwife advised this, and it worked a treat.
For haemorrhoids, ask gp to prescribe Uniroid cream, was only thing which helped for me.

KSmith94 · 12/04/2025 14:26

I sympathise with you on the hemorrhoid, I've been contacting my GP as it's been a couple months, they suggested Movicol so I don't have to strain, the pain relief from that alone is magical but they also prescribed uniroid suppositories and cream, may be worth contacting yours xx

You really need to see a doctor as this is not normal.

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 12/04/2025 14:27

Prunes bran things like that. oddly enough diet coke does it for me, drink that and I am sure to want the loo shortly after!

AquaPeer · 12/04/2025 14:27

You guys must’ve had pretty mild constipation if it could be shifted with 2 glasses lemon water or a black coffee 😂 or an orange juice!

Elmeux · 12/04/2025 14:28

Add in some golden linseed as a topper to your Greek yoghurt

I have been backwards and forwards to doctors, they say it’s my diet which it could well be as like I said I have no appetite so tend to just eat crap 🤦‍♀️
constipation runs in our family on the female side though

Oats contain beta glucan which helps combat constipation (a gastroenterologist told me this when I saw her about my IBS).

lunaemma · 12/04/2025 14:30

Random but tinned pears in juice, drink the juice too. Nice with Greek yoghurt

What oats do you eat? Just normal porridge oats?

arcticpandas · 12/04/2025 14:32

MACROGOL. And black coffee.

SquidgibleDirigible · 12/04/2025 14:32

Yep normal porridge oats.

Lassango · 12/04/2025 14:32

Add a large glass of prune juice.

Venicelagoon · 12/04/2025 14:33

I find eating an apple helps. And drink more water.

Sixtypfft · 12/04/2025 14:34

Chia seeds mixed in with the yogurt.
Maybe start with 1 tablespoon.

fussychica · 12/04/2025 14:34

Prunes
Bran
Drink lots of water
If you're a drinker a glass or two of red wine sometimes helps.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 12/04/2025 14:34

I've found dried apricots very effective with young children!!

SquidgibleDirigible · 12/04/2025 14:34

Beta glucan is a kind of fibre and also adds moisture to stools making them softer, and is generally good for gut health. Having a bowl of porridge for breakfast with some mixed seeds and plenty of water would be a great place to start.
