I normally eat Greek yogurt with walnuts and blueberries but I’m thinking too much dairy is probably contributing to my terrible constipation. Any recommendations?

im now in agony from a big purple haemorrhoid so im pretty desperate (hence the AIBU) ill eat anything as i have no appetite so willing to try anything

Prunes and at least 2 litres of water. Daily. Unless you blitz the chia, soak them first. I prefer Linseed.

SanFairyAnnie · 12/04/2025 17:34

prunes-the packets sold on the baking aisle. Tinned ones are not as nice

BeyondMyWits · 12/04/2025 17:46

Another one for prunes. I have a bowl of jordans sugar free granola (usually apple and cinnamon) with 2 or 3 M&S soft eating prunes chopped in. With a cup of hot tea.

Stay hydrated. Very important. And gentle exercise keeps things moving.

I cannot eat much bread (including pizza, hot cross buns 😭😭etc), or bananas, and milk chocolate is a nono. "Digestive transit" slows.

Intheband · 12/04/2025 17:49

As you are hypermobile like me you have probably stretched your bowels and have slow transit. I would say trying to do a gluten free and lactose free diet for a month and then decide if you feel better.

I do gluten free - makes my joint pains and bowels better. I don’t notice as much difference with lactose.

try googling hypermobility and constipation

I would also use laxatives to have a clear out.

I can’t help on breakfast as I don’t eat it, if I’m peckish I have oat biscuits at 11am.

seriouslynonames · 12/04/2025 17:55

Try ground flax seed - I get the Linwoods one at Sainsbury's or Waitrose.
Two spoonfuls on my porridge every morning. You must also drink more water when you start using it or it won't help.

That's the thing with lactulose too - you need to drink more water or it makes things worse. It also won't clear a backlog, so probably best to do the laxative option to clear things then flaxseed (or prunes or all the other things PP have recommended ) for maintenance.

I have had years of constipation, and I think I have very slow transit - and am being investigated for connective tissue problems incl possible hyper mobility...

I would substitute soy milk for dairy milk in porridge, use oat milk in tea/coffee.

Dairy can play havoc with bowels unfortunately and it also can inhibit absorption of iron.

Make sure you're drinking through the day as well, your body needs water to get those bowels moving. Fruit and veg contain water as well.

Differentstarts · 12/04/2025 19:52

Black coffee and 20 lambert and butler works everytime

seriouslynonames · 12/04/2025 20:14

Oh and I use almond milk (unsweetened) in my porridge. Oat milk is too much with porridge. Dairy I find difficult to tolerate. Not a big fan of soy but it might work.

Flightsoffancy · 12/04/2025 20:17

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet as I've not read through, but I can highly recommend two triphala capsules every morning. I buy Fushi Organic ones (usually get them on Amazon). They're brilliant, and gentle. I've been taking them for years.

Mary46 · 12/04/2025 20:19

Same with me op I get so sluggish. My doc said at my colonoscopy to drink alot more fluids or slows it all down. I hate prunes lol

wilmawebb · 12/04/2025 20:20

Kiwis definitely. Green rather than golden 🥝

MellersSmellers · 12/04/2025 20:20

Doctor told me Movicol then 2 apples and 2 pears a day, plus plenty of water.

Byebyechicken · 12/04/2025 20:24

Magnesium supplements

Hankunamatata · 12/04/2025 20:26

Porridge with dates. Lots of water.

SplendidUtterly · 12/04/2025 20:31

Smashed avocado on top of a slice of toast.

ThisCosyPoster · 12/04/2025 20:44

I upped my fruit intake and now go every morning before my shower. Perfect timing. Lots of fruit, greek yogurt, crushed linseeds and handful of nuts for breakfast. Soup or salad for lunch. Veg with dinner.

Wherestheinstructions · 12/04/2025 20:51

If your anus is really sore and you’re still constipated. Have a liquid only diet for 2-3 days, drink smoothies, water, coffee. It’ll be easy enough if you’re very sore.
Your constipation will pass then you can start introducing veggies and fruit in your diet. Stay away from carbs, they’ll bung you up again.
you can buy laxido over the counter, use that daily as you start to eat again, it’s horrid though I used one sachet each morning, downed it in a small glass of water.

Marks & Spencer Agen prunes. Firstly, they're delicious and secondly, they have very immediate effects.

Are they different to other prunes?

TariffPenguin · 12/04/2025 21:33

Floatlikeafeather2 · 12/04/2025 20:55

Are they different to other prunes?

Oh yes. Softer. Sweeter.
def get these ones. Squishy

JMSA · 12/04/2025 23:22

I’ve heard this is effective, if you didn’t want to buy a whole pack of prunes!

To ask what I should eat for breakfast to combat constipation?

2 bowls of all bran. Breakfast of champions

Agree. I can eat a tin of prunes with very limited effects but the sugary joy that is all bran is guaranteed.

I agree with this. Have your whole system a rest til you’re cleared. Poor you. Good luck

BlackForestCake · 13/04/2025 07:01

Six pints of real ale

BlackForestCake · 13/04/2025 07:01

Mulledjuice · 13/04/2025 07:09

Oat bran is great for this. Add it/ linseeds to your yoghurt
