To ask what I should eat for breakfast to combat constipation?

I normally eat Greek yogurt with walnuts and blueberries but I’m thinking too much dairy is probably contributing to my terrible constipation. Any recommendations?

im now in agony from a big purple haemorrhoid so im pretty desperate (hence the AIBU) ill eat anything as i have no appetite so willing to try anything

Kiwi with the skin on. I didn't know this until recently with my son but worked so well!

Firenzeflower · 13/04/2025 07:24

Wheat bran, chia seeds, prunes,

Going against the grain (no pun intended) here but for me adding fibre to these kinds of situations makes things worse. I normally need something very rich and sweet/fatty - think a hot chocolate or a freshly made brownie/cookie. Some people also swear by a McDonalds or other fast food. Adding more bulk when you are already struggling might just worsen things. But agree with people saying tons of water (hot and/or room temp) and fruit in the morning once you’re actually hungry.

2x dates per day, every day, maybe 3x dates. Not only will they aid constipation- they have a lot of nutriental value.

sip a mug of boiled water with nothing in it or lemon/orange added. This will help your digestive system and it’s better warm

add raspberries to your Greek yogurt as they are highly fibrous to help you poo.

DatingDinosaur · 13/04/2025 07:33

Drink more water so the all that fibre you're eating has moisture to absorb which will make the bulk softer and easier to pass.

MikeRafone · 13/04/2025 07:35

Just to add, frozen raspberries are more economical, just take them out the night before or if you forget heat gently to defrost

oviraptor21 · 13/04/2025 07:36

Grains/seeds/bulk all a complete no-no for me when I had haemorrhoids. Pharmacy laxatives also useless and highly irritant. I swear by prunes and getting the haemorrhoids properly treated - with an operation if they can't be controlled.

I’m on my way out so haven’t read the whole thread so sorry if someone else has mentioned this but I find Fybogel chews brilliant (I haven’t used the sachets). They add water to the stool and help me to go much more regularly and easily. Brilliant things. Gentle too!

TheEllisGreyMethod · 13/04/2025 07:44

Constipation and slow gastric transit are exceedingly common in hyper mobility.
You've had some good advice here but you need soluble and insoluble fibre regularly throughout the day, plus plenty of water.

Dollmeup · 13/04/2025 07:57

I'm always constipated too, despite having a decent diet and drinking loads of water. No idea why really. My go to breakfast is branflakes with raisins. I like dried or tinned prunes too. Some people say Weetabix is good but it seems to make me even more constipated for some reason.

All bran is the only thing that helps me.
I recently went abroad, all inclusive ate like a pig, didn't go to the loo for 5 days!! I kept thinking where is all this food going!
Came home bought all bran and got going again

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 13/04/2025 09:24

When I first started nursing (back in the 80s) we used to give patients who were prone to constipation a compote made from dried apricots, prunes and dates. Worked wonders.

Kiwis

CraftyHappyMama · 13/04/2025 09:53

Firstly, fast for a couple of days or eat as little as possible. Give your body a break from pooping.

Biomel powder is amazing too, it helps fix your gut and eases bloating and softens stools.

Use the anusol wipes and whatever creams you can. Also aloe vera gel and witch hazel helps too.

Lots of water and fibrous foods like fruits, veg and like others suggest prunes and prune juice and flaxseed.

Kefir, and chia seeds with whatever fruit

Dragon fruit. Definitely dragon fruit

Don't ask me how I know 😭

x2boys · 13/04/2025 10:09

Adding new foods wont help with constipation especiially if you are impacted go to the pharmacist or gp there are lots of medications that help .

Elsvieta · 13/04/2025 19:53

Why breakfast specifically? All the meals contribute to the problem equally. Make it a cast-iron rule to have some kind of fruit or veg with every single meal. And drink plenty of water.

Snap. As I type this I’m in a hotel room in New York eating a bag of prunes . It’s not heat this time as it’s cold here. We’ve gone room only so I’m having bagels and avacado toast for breakfast, terrible mistake I need fruit and yoghurt and a bean based cereal .

For me because going to the gym, having breakfast and then going to the loo starts the day right , just makes you feel better

Apparently whole oranges 🍊 are very beneficial? A nurse advised my mum who also suffers.
