To ask what I should eat for breakfast to combat constipation?

I normally eat Greek yogurt with walnuts and blueberries but I’m thinking too much dairy is probably contributing to my terrible constipation. Any recommendations?

im now in agony from a big purple haemorrhoid so im pretty desperate (hence the AIBU) ill eat anything as i have no appetite so willing to try anything

Be careful with the chia - it needs to be soaked overnight or can swell inside you. If you want a "plan" you could try the human being diet but maybe just enough fruit veg and water will sort you out.

That’s the idea!

For me the most important thing is never to drink tea. One cup of normal tea and everything stops moving. I stick to coffee and mint tea.

Theolittle · 12/04/2025 16:41

I need 40g of bran flakes for brekkie every day - if I skip a day I have problems. I gave loads of fruit and veg but that doesn’t help without the bran flakes. Over the last couple of decades fruit and veg have been bred for our sweet tastes and fibre is getting less

PeloMom · 12/04/2025 16:50

Bran, beans

DrCoconut · 12/04/2025 16:50

Shreddies

wizzbitt · 12/04/2025 16:51

Glass of prune juice with breakfast.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 12/04/2025 16:55

Golden linseeds/flaxseed - a tablespoon whizzed up in a good blender or coffee grinder or crushed with a mortar & pestle, add to your breakfast cereal/yogurt. You can whizz up in bulk and keep in an airtight container to use at your leisure. Leaving them intact means that they will just pass through your gut.

Make sure you are also drinking plenty of fluid during the day and eating fruit and vegetables. I agree with those suggesting that you see your GP to rule out any underlying medical issues too and to get some help for those painful haemorrhoids.

Intheband · 12/04/2025 16:57

Do you walk enough? I find if am too static my bowels slow down.

Are you hypermobile? If so try cutting out gluten and dairy.

I find Movicol the best but if I get constipated I need a bigger dose till I get going and then I taper off.

I find fibre is not my friend.

I am also lazy with meal planning and so use box meals like gousto or hello fresh and I at least eat a variety of foods.

YessandNno · 12/04/2025 16:59

I wouldn't recommend Shreddies or prune juice, personally. Shreddies are UPF junk and prune juice (as with all fruit juices) is very high in sugar and very low in fibre.

Branleuse · 12/04/2025 17:00

Give up wheat for a few weeks and see if that helps.
If i eat bread or pasta , i can't poo :(

Biomel probiotics help a lot too

TwilightSkies · 12/04/2025 17:01

Don’t eat anything from 6pm onwards. Then have a couple of kiwis in the morning once you get really hungry.

Someone mentioned black coffee. It works like a charm for constipation.

Especially if you smoke a ciggie with it, according to my 20-Bensons-a-day granny!

How the old girl lived to 98 is a complete mystery...

uncomfortablydumb60 · 12/04/2025 17:04

Add flaxseeds and linseeds to the Greek yogurt. Seeded wholemeal bread.
prunes, apples and pears for snacks and handful of raw nuts( I like brazils and almonds)
Drink lots more fluid than usual

Magnesium citrate before bed.

Totally recommend this. Apparently most people are deficient.

AprilBunny · 12/04/2025 17:20

All Bran.

WhySoManySocks · 12/04/2025 17:20

Why just breakfast? Have you already changed your other meals?

vandelier · 12/04/2025 17:24

@BalladOfBarryAndFreda That is exactly what the dietician said to my relative when she was backed up after surgery and opiate pain relief. Buy milled seeds or as you say, blend or grind them yourself.

Many are recommending such seeds, but they work far better when ground/milled. I use them too in weetabix, porridge and on Greek yogurt with fruit. I should probably drink a bit more water but I make up for that with tea/coffee and yogurt I hope. Well no consitpation here anyway (touch wood!).

Handyweatherstation · 12/04/2025 17:29

Plenty of greens in my diet does the job for me and I eat them 3-4 times a week. Tender stem broccoli and spring greens are especially effective. Also drinking more water helps.

Chia seeds mixed in with the yogurt.
Maybe start with 1 tablespoon.

This. I soak my chia seeds in milk overnight, then add to my yoghurt, fruit, nuts breakfast.

Lactulose is pretty useless. As a poster said above, you need a macrogol, such as movicol or laxido.

I used lactulose for over a week to sort out my constipated 6 year old so I guess it's not the best

Katemax82 · 12/04/2025 17:34

A litre of apple juice might get things moving, also eat a few kiwis
