I’m genuinely baffled, yesterday at work one of the women came in and I was blown away as I am most days. It was Friday so she was dressed a bit more casual. She only had on a pair of mom jeans, and a plain crewneck jumper, but it was to put togetherness that I couldn’t get over. Underneath her jumper, she had a long white sleeve top and the neck of the top could JUST be seen popping up from her jumper, she rolled up her jumper sleeves so you could see the white sleeves underneath, she had a pair of Adidas sambas on. It just looked so perfectly put together and thought out yet so simple at the same time. If I tried to emulate that I would look scruffy!! Just how does she do it? Anyone have any insight? I asked her and she told me where she got said items but I supppse it’s the fit that worked so well.

I was looking at the thread about people who wear pyjamas to go out and it's just the very opposite of my attitude!

No to the manicured nails, eyebrows seem fairly shaped naturally, she doesn’t get them “done” in any way though. A lot of others in our office get them laminated or tinted and she never does this. Just naturally pretty.

I bet she doesn’t have big lip fillers either?

RosesAndHellebores · 12/04/2025 12:27

Ironing
Fit
Planning
Colours
Good shoes and bag
Sorting the laundry so nothing runs
Everything and the person scrupulously clean with a whisper of enhancing make-up

CosmicScouser · 12/04/2025 12:28

I reckon it's achievable for most people.

But I think it takes more effort for some than others.

I swear by colours that suit. I think that goes a long way.

You could have the best outfit, but if the colours don't work for you you're never gonna look great in it.

(Not that I'm one of these always-put-together people. I look a right mess most of the time. It takes effort for me. But when I make that effort, Ive had compliments from strangers out and about, etc. but yeah.. most of the time I look a right mess. And I HAVE been known to go the supermarket in my pjs ... If it's late at night)

ManyATrueWord · 12/04/2025 12:29

Ironing 😄

Wearing a colour that works for your really helps. Like the whole "have your colours done" thing. Got a chum who had it done and she was all black, white. Red before but is now looking amazing in pinks and blues (of a very certain shade). I get it right myself sometimes and you do get compliments.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/04/2025 12:32

I look like the woman you’re describing. The reason I do is because I’ve watched all the Trinny videos on Facebook. She pushes her sleeves up to show the white, she has the half tuck and the French tuck right, she layers beautifully.

the other day I went out in 4 layers. A shoulder pad t shirt to give structure, A white blouse with lace sleeves, put a white longline linen waistcoat over it, then a bright coat and matching scarf. Different textures, interesting textures etc

LaurieFairyCake · 12/04/2025 12:34

On the Trinny website you can get your colours matched for clothes. It’s bloody brilliant

Omg the ironing! She irons everything! Yes! Could this be it! 🤣 it was the white bit of the T-shirt popping up behind the jumper collar that I loved the most (weird to say I know) it was the perfect layering. I’m going to have to buy a few bits and try it.

It’s quite fashionable now ( a lot of influencers are doing it on instagram) to have a pop of a white T shirt showing above a crew neck jumper

It’s the little touches that make a difference

Can you post a pic of the jumper/tshirt combination?

I put a link up to the next section called “the set” that’s where they came from ☺️

What’s her posture like? I bet it’s perfect. That’s very important.

Probably does pilates and/ or yoga

BobbyBiscuits · 12/04/2025 12:40

I know exactly what you mean. Some people are just really neat and well put together looking. Me, I always feel like my hair looks shite, no makeup, clothes that swamp me, my wonky gait, even just the overly expressive look on my face...

I just always look a bit 'chaotic' even if I'm wearing some fly ass clothes! Lol 🤣

ExcellentLawnOrnament · 12/04/2025 12:41

arcticpandas · 12/04/2025 08:16

I'm really useless when it comes to this. Like give me clothes and I will make them look bad. I'm tall and slim but I just have no fashion sense at all. I can't see what looks good. That's why I don't put up any decorations at home and why I don't wear make up. I rather rationalise my lack of talent into "Ha, I don't care" mode than trying and utterly failing.

I'm similar I think (well, not the tall and slim bit...) I just don't seem to have a sense of what looks good at all - I see people looking amazing in things it would never have occured to me to put together. So I just wear the same old safe basics and have never learned to do make up.

And I have an excellent line in 'I don't care about that stuff' nonchalance. Which is not totally untrue, but sometimes I feel like I'm missing some big secret about being cool 🤣

I'm not offended but I am entitled to comment on your thread.

It’s not my thread.

I think the fit is really important too, especially for those of us who are a bit shorter. I often find tops and bottoms sit too long on me and make me look shorter and dumpier than they would if they went in and out and stopped at the right places on my body.

I remember reading something really fascinating about this once but I've mever found it again. It was about lengths and proportions - it was something like never cut your body in half with clothing lines, but stick to thirds (I think...)

I do look at this more now and it really makes a difference in ways I can't quit articulate.

Annascaul · 12/04/2025 12:45

StonwEd · 12/04/2025 07:57

It’s a lovely, casual, simple get up. Most would look nice dressed like that, hair done, simple make up, lovely. Try something similar if you like it!

No. It’s definitely a tall and thin look. Honestly.

Mnetcurious · 12/04/2025 12:45

TheCountofMountingCrispBags · 12/04/2025 07:46

Is she tall? Daft question, but all the people I see sporting the 'effortlessly casual' look are tall and slim.
It 5' 1", I just look dumpy in that get-up!

Agreed. “Effortlessly put together” in a simple jeans and top is achieved a lot more easily with a ‘good’ figure. You could put a 5’3 size 16 (me) in the exact same outfit as a 5’6 size 10 and she’d look better, all other things being equal.
Nice hair, simple but effective makeup and good use of accessories helps too.

FleaBeeBob · 12/04/2025 12:55

I’m too lazy to put my face on when I’m not at work and when i go out I see so many glamorous women and I do wonder why I cba.

Your post. You know what I mean .

Emmz1510 · 12/04/2025 13:08

Oh who knows? I’m 45 and have been wondering this since I was a teenager. Some people just seem to instinctively know what’s fashionable, have it in their wardrobe and know how to put it together effortlessly. I seem to either either look try-hard, frumpy or too casual 😔

Frugalgal · 12/04/2025 13:11
  1. Thinness
2 Well proportioned, if not thin. 3 Colours that suit.
  1. No 'floordrobe' 😳
  2. Confidence

I fail on all of the above, massive boobs that distort my shape and what I wear, big belly that has to be hidden, menopause hair, I buy loads of cheap clothes that do nothing for me but I can't bear to buy fewer expensive pieces because they'd look crap on me too.

Not sure what happened with the numbering, can't even get that straight!

CatrionaBalfour · 12/04/2025 13:34

@Frugalgal - don't put yourself down! Also, you deserve nice clothes, and to feel good about yourself. I bet you have nice features and lots of positives about your appearance. Often it's confidence. Take pps advice, look at some style blogs online, or buy a couple of magazines for inspiration.
I'm not tall, not thin, not perfect, but I enjoy clothes and try to look good. I'm sure you can!

dodgyplant · 12/04/2025 13:44

Size 10. No big knockers and arse. That's why she looks good.
