I’m genuinely baffled, yesterday at work one of the women came in and I was blown away as I am most days. It was Friday so she was dressed a bit more casual. She only had on a pair of mom jeans, and a plain crewneck jumper, but it was to put togetherness that I couldn’t get over. Underneath her jumper, she had a long white sleeve top and the neck of the top could JUST be seen popping up from her jumper, she rolled up her jumper sleeves so you could see the white sleeves underneath, she had a pair of Adidas sambas on. It just looked so perfectly put together and thought out yet so simple at the same time. If I tried to emulate that I would look scruffy!! Just how does she do it? Anyone have any insight? I asked her and she told me where she got said items but I supppse it’s the fit that worked so well.

I've just watched this.

You can tell that's some very expensive gear she's got there - the beautiful heavyweight knitwear and coats hang so well!

At first sight the jumper, jeans, trainers and coat combo looks casual but it's oh so sophisticated really and just wouldn't look half as stylish with cheaper fabrics.

She also has beautiful skin, thick long hair and flawless make-up... I'm very envious Grin

This is a really popular look right now. Understated. But doesn’t float my boat. I’m not a lover of beige - in fact, have never owned anything beige. The belted camel coat looks like a bathrobe or Ron Atkinson on the touch line.

But I have v different taste. Vivienne Westwood, Debbie Harry, Alexander McQueen, Keith Richards, 80s hip hop. Mainly like black with a dash of bright colour. Do love a cotton scarf,

MrsSlimShady · 12/04/2025 11:29

One thing I’ve noticed is that when I am overweight, I end up spending a lot on single items, and I’m still not happy with how it looks.

I’ve lost weight and got down to a size 10 petit (5 ft 3”) and I can now shop in Zara, Mango and H&M and buy much cheaper clothes in size M and I’m getting massive compliments on my purchases.

WRT ironing, you don’t have to do everything. I only iron something well if it’s a nice piece and I’m going out or it looks terrible if not pressed e.g. work chinos. I’ve picked up a new thing recently. When I iron, I also boot up my hand held steamer. I put it on full whack. When I get to a school shirt, work top, something that takes a while to press, but I can live without being perfect, I give it a once over with the steamer. It takes 20 seconds. Put it on a hanger, whoosh whoosh, done.

Confidence. Being happy and comfortable in who you are is very attractive.

Oh!! That's my theory out the window!

She may have long arms & legs & still be only 5'2" which makes clothes look just as elegant if well put together.I have a 5'2"friend with long arms & leg length the same as someone around 5'6" 5'7" She generally looks fantastic in well chosen outfits that suits her slim frame, especially wearing trousers with heels. It's not all to do with height in many cases & more to do with the whole body.

I don't think that extremely long-sleeved jumper is practical at all.

Yes, it does help enormously - looks like real Max Mara coat, not the week-ender. Unfortunately, not many people can afford to buy 'this effortlessness'.

SapporoBaby · 12/04/2025 11:36

@GraveAndQuietits not long legs. It’s a long torso. It makes ever short women look elegant because it makes them look somehow tall

polkaloca · 12/04/2025 11:37

long torso can look good but they can also bad. it depends what you wear.

I have a normal-sized torso and short legs and it makes it VERY difficult to look good. I look dumpy whatever I do because of the short legs.

YoungSoak · 12/04/2025 11:43

Knowing what suits you really helps look put together as well as having well looked after hair and skin. I’m short and an hourglass so I’m all tits and ankles and can’t wear chunky jumpers or shirts as they don’t suit me. Fitted tops with a shirt worn opened over one and loose jeans suit me. Good accessories help pull a look together so a suede belt, a bit of jewellery etc. Good fabrics too

DirtyBird · 12/04/2025 11:43

I don’t think you have to be slim. I worked with someone that was always put together and she was heavy/overweight. However her hair, clothing style, makeup, jewelry was always flawless. She was very confident and that really made the difference.

my DM was overweight as well and people always complimented her. She was always very well put together even wearing jeans and sandals. She always had her clothes dry cleaned or ironed as well.

no matter what I do, slim or not, I never look put together well at all. I just don’t have that it factor. Some of us have it and some of us don’t.

Kylie Minoguge is a tiny 5' yet looks great in clothes because she is petite.with longish arms & legs. At least that's my opinion right or wrong😁

thisoldcity · 12/04/2025 11:54

A very stylish friend of mine told me once that she has very few clothes and she wears them to death before replacing them with something quite similar. She finds the exact thing she wants, good quality, and has just a few outfits that she wears. I tend to have a load of clothes and I'm always digging around to find something that will go, but then I buy a lot of Vinted and rarely plan very much!

bouncydog · 12/04/2025 11:56

Well I iron everything, wear levi jeans and am 5’2” and size 8-10. But I’m a 34D and short waisted so I just can’t achieve the look I want to as shirts get pulled out of jeans, there are very limited petite blazers to buy and my cashmere sweaters are just that bit too long!

polkaloca · 12/04/2025 11:57

@Silverstars21 Kylie is perfectly proportioned.

Catchingrays · 12/04/2025 12:01

Someone I know who is into clothes and immaculate gets everything dry cleaned!

Poonu · 12/04/2025 12:02

Get a capsule wardrobe.

SimpleSister · 12/04/2025 12:06

Is it posture? If I stand upright and square my shoulders I look different. I looked in full length mirror in a shop it surprised me. I try and remember. Also don't let your pelvic frame roll forward keep it over your feet. (many men do this)

CosmicScouser · 12/04/2025 12:17

She probably wears colours that "work" for her complexion.

Also does she have things like manicured nails? Groomed eyebrows? Etc

Inmydreams88 · 12/04/2025 12:17

I think it’s about knowing what looks good on you, not what looks good on others. Some outfits look amazing on other people but don’t work for me. I think you need to know what suits your body, buy quality pieces over quantity and be confident in yourself. Helps a lot too if you are slim and attractive with good teeth and hair.

No to the manicured nails, eyebrows seem fairly shaped naturally, she doesn’t get them “done” in any way though. A lot of others in our office get them laminated or tinted and she never does this. Just naturally pretty.

I follow a woman on youtube who has a 'ten item wardrobe'. She;s called The Daily Connosseur if you want to look her up. She has a core wardrobe every season though so more a 40 item wardrobe. Her look is not really mine (although she undoubtedly looks better than me) but it's very interesting how she puts things together and she discusses the various decisions she makes and why. I think it has changed how I look at clothes. I buy far fewer pieces and generally really think about what i buy.

And - ironing always. I like ironing though. Sunday afternoon I iron in front of netflix and with a few glasses of prosecco and I put together the entire week's wirth of clothes. I am very big on matching jewellery with my outfits and pay alot of attention to that.

I am dumpy though- 5 ft 2 and 13 stone so I never feel 'good'. But I do get compliments.

I would agree with this. One of my colleagues is large and she always looks good, strong, vibrant colours and good shapes. Nothing clingy, but nothing baggy.
