I’m genuinely baffled, yesterday at work one of the women came in and I was blown away as I am most days. It was Friday so she was dressed a bit more casual. She only had on a pair of mom jeans, and a plain crewneck jumper, but it was to put togetherness that I couldn’t get over. Underneath her jumper, she had a long white sleeve top and the neck of the top could JUST be seen popping up from her jumper, she rolled up her jumper sleeves so you could see the white sleeves underneath, she had a pair of Adidas sambas on. It just looked so perfectly put together and thought out yet so simple at the same time. If I tried to emulate that I would look scruffy!! Just how does she do it? Anyone have any insight? I asked her and she told me where she got said items but I supppse it’s the fit that worked so well.

There seems to be a belief that sophisticated and stylish are synonymous with wearing neutrals. I have to say that I disagree. I think that judicious use of colour, whether that takes the form of pastels or brights, can also result in ‘put together’ outfits too. I would hate to live only in neutrals!

Yes I agree. Most of influencers preaching this style don't look sophisticated, just 'neat' (I am not saying this is bad). Majority of people need some accent or color to make their features 'pop up'.

Is she slim?

One more thing I thought about - shoes that are clean and well cared for can really make a difference, even if they are old! I have impression that a lot of people buy sneakers and never cleans them. Those Sambas will make no difference to how you loos if they turned grey! Same with leather boots (or any type of suede, leather shoes) - you need good shoe polish and brush and clean them regularly.

I suit brighter colours, and dare I say patterns more than boring neutrals

I disagree, bright colours and patterns make me feel disorganised and anxious because I cannot easily match anything in my wardrobe. 'Boring' neutrals on the other hand are so versatile and easy to pull outfits from, my boring neutrals wardrobe makes me calm and happy. Maybe next time check your judgement before you post?

doodahdayy · 14/04/2025 11:21

@Howmanyrosesi was commenting on what I prefer to wear. I don’t know you to judge you. It’s nothing to do with you

Well you are clearly making an assumption about neutrals being boring are you not? Why not just say I prefer bright colours to neutrals without any adjectives attached?

They took personal offence at me using the word boring

polkaloca · 14/04/2025 11:43

You think neutrals are boring and you are entitled to say so. This place is getting ridiculous.

It's her opinion. She is allowed to say so.

Howmanyroses · 14/04/2025 11:52

Ok, two can play this game. I think bright and heavily patterned clothes are garish, overwhelming the senses with clashing colours and chaotic designs. Instead of making a bold fashion statement, they tend to look mismatched and haphazard, lacking the cohesion that defines true style. The eye doesn't know where to land, and the overall effect can be distracting rather than fashionable. While individuality is important, these kinds of outfits often sacrifice elegance and balance, resulting in a look that feels more costume than chic. This is my opinion

polkaloca · 14/04/2025 12:00

Are you ok @Howmanyroses?

doodahdayy · 14/04/2025 12:00

@Howmanyrosesyou're entitled to your opinion and I don’t take personal offence to it

polkaloca · 14/04/2025 12:00

@doodahdayy are you not now setting fire to all your brights & patterns? 😆

Ah yes, the unicorn t-shirt!

I went to Hamilton at the theatre recently. I’m a big fan and wanted some merch so got a black t-shirt that has “Awesome! Wow!” across the front in quite loud hot pink and yellow. My plan was to use it for sleeping as I don’t really like clothing with writing.

My god but it’s the nicest fit of a t-shirt I’ve ever had. It just sits perfectly on me. I really want a plain version and would happily buy a dozen mixed across plain black and plain white. I’ve tried to find “blanks” of the brand online but no joy. It’s so maddening.

Take it to a tailor seamstress and have a duplicate made in the fabric of your choice. Order the finest cotton online and take it to them to be made up.

doodahdayy · 14/04/2025 12:20

@polkalocaha no I’d pretty much only be wearing pjs then!

Omg the ironing! She irons everything! Yes! Could this be it! 🤣 it was the white bit of the T-shirt popping up behind the jumper collar that I loved the most (weird to say I know) it was the perfect layering. I’m going to have to buy a few bits and try it.

Ironing. And expensive clothes. I have a friend like this - her clothes are all very simple and classic but they are all also expensive. And new.
