To take recreational drugs in your 50s

Isthisokdoyouthink · 11/04/2025 19:34

Just that really. Bunch of married fathers going out and taking recreational drugs (concealed up one of them’s rectum) - one hid it from his wife, one has a wife that does it too, the other I don’t know.

What do you think?

AIBU to feel a bit eurgh about it and a bit like they never grew up?

YABU - it’s fine. Each to their own

YANBU - it is a bit yuk.

I think this about marijuana.

I think it's incredibly helpful to many. Then I think about the psychosis link theory. I really need to explore that and how accurate that is! The thought of it bringing on psychosis and other conditions is scary. It could all be unproven though. Another subject for me to research.

I do know someone who developed paranoid schizophrenia through cannabis use (skunk)

Early psychosis teams treat people who have either:

  • experienced trauma or
  • have drug induced trauma
  • Or both

I think the link is well known.

Same. It was just weed in his case in the 90s.

Taxswellian · 11/04/2025 21:28

Me can't be worked up by anyone taking drugs. Could make then happier

pimplebum · 11/04/2025 21:29

What’s wrong with a nice cup of tea and cake for kicks ?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/04/2025 21:29

I watched a short programme about a legalisation project in Ohio. Maybe it was because of the drugs of choice there that it did not appear to work well!!
No, it seems to make the problem worse, somewhat like when Germany legalised prostitution, men who'd never considered breaking the law were now buying sex.

I've had a few lovely nights with a cuppa and home made cake. It would be with extreme caution because of my fears regarding bringing on problems as highlighted by other posts.

Alcohol would cause me the most issues physically these days tbh.

WhatDaHell · 11/04/2025 21:18

Yeah, I had no idea this happened much until I saw a story about a teen girl passing away after she smoked a joint that was laced. I looked into it and it's becoming pretty common in the US, not so much here.

I'm not against marijuana because it has some fantastic health benefits. But, I wouldn't risk buying it from an unknown source anymore. (Not that I have in the past decade anyway).

so many drugs going back decades now have been cut and laced. There was a huge batch of pills in early 00s London that was cut with smack. So much of weed now isn’t weed it’s skunk which will @@@k anyone up & lead to psychosis. I like the Dutch who test all drugs before large raves and let people know what’s in them. A good pal in my youth said he’d never take uk drugs - he always wanted everything to be tested so you could be confident of what you were taking etc.

Didn't portugal legalise a lot of recreational drugs in the last few years and it's actually had a huge impact on crime rates lowering?

When things are illegal it means they're unregulated, unsupervised and literally a bag of white powder could be anything from cocaine to ajax to anything much worse.

Yes they legalised or at least decriminalised heroin (and perhaps others). Professor David Nutt did a documentary years ago which touched on this and demonstrated how it gave addicts their lives back and reduced the crime associated with it (including crime perpetrated in order to acquire and take drugs).

…and just Google for the recent tragic outcome connected to such psychosis. Why would anyone risk themselves and others. Not to mention how supporting the drugs trade messes with vulnerable people in society.

In the programme, there were a high proportion of drug users addicted to crack, heroine and synthetic drugs.

I'd really support legalisation only of a select few things with controls. MDMA/Ecstacy, mushrooms. I'd love to see further research conducted using LSD or psilocybin as a treatment for depression. I would fully support this.

Cocaine - no. But, if it impacted those subject to exploitation positively, is it worth trying? More people might take it like you say. And more people on coke is a big no.

They are the types to buy fairtrade tea too yet drugs cause so much damage in terms of gangs and forced labour. Not to mention the addiction for many.

Yes, this. I took hard drugs a few times (like, less than 10) when I was young and ignorant, and I thought that all the people in the supply chain were criminals, and if they went to prison too bad. I didn't have a lot of sympathy for addicts either back then. I had no real idea about the suffering that drugs cause, no idea about the ruined lives, the murders, the vicious gangs, the people who are forced to be drug mules, the devastated families of people who are addicted for years, or who overdose. I'd never do it now.

Oh yeah, it's been going on for so long, it's just getting riskier and riskier with time.

I saw your other post and I have a friend who just went off one day after years of smoking weed and never came back. Very paranoid and still won't leave his home.

On the other hand, my FIL was terminally ill and started using a cannabis edible with THC and it dramatically helped his symptoms. He still unfortunately passed away. But it's bizarre to see how the same(ISH) substance has either a positive or negative effect.

I think we should make testing of drugs available everywhere here tbh.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/04/2025 21:41

Isthisokdoyouthink · 11/04/2025 19:41

That’s interesting.

My STBXH thinks it’s ok and I suspect will follow suit now we are separating.

Another thing to add to the ‘ick list’

Take out another life insurance policy on the idiot and be glad that he won't be in your life day to day.

HardyKoala · 11/04/2025 21:44

You either think it’s disgusting at any age or you don’t. It may not be advisable health wise but saying it’s ‘yuck’ due to age is no different from saying women over 50 shouldn’t have long hair, or the like.

Wishyouwerehere50 · 11/04/2025 21:45

@WhatDaHell I'd like to see testing available too, for those drugs that can be. They won't do it I believe, because of fears it will encourage use.

My feeling is it's so much to do with the alcohol industry and those behind it. To not divert away from that which brings on so much revenue to a select few. Maybe that's too conspiracy theory 🤷‍♀️.

Didn't the FBI flood poor black communities with cocaine,/crack intentionally in the 80s. The legalities rarely have anything to do with care and concern for us, that I'm sure of.

BatchCookBabe · 11/04/2025 21:45

Taking recreational drugs is utterly grim. I judge anyone who does it, and the (few) people I know who do smoke weed are not very well educated, and are a bit dim, and are also not the middle or upper classes. Just IME. The smell of weed is utterly foul, and I don't know why people use it.

I know a woman in her mid 30s who has a 4 y.o. child, and she smokes weed 4-7 times a day. Not just occasionally, but every day, around the child, and with the latest man she has in her life/living with her. It's disgusting and I don't want anything to do with anyone who smokes cannabis. (Or takes ANY recreational drug!) It's not cool, it doesn't make you edgy, and it's not clever. It's foul.

A person doesn't look big smoking weed/taking drugs. They look like an idiot. Someone smoking weed/taking recreational drugs in their 50s, I would laugh at, and pity... How pathetic!

nomorezoflora · 11/04/2025 19:41

Depends what it is. Coke and amphetamines? Fuck no, heart attack drugs and make you into a wanker for the duration. Weed? Meh, ok, whatever. Psychedelics? Why not, as long as there's someone experienced to guide and sort dosage and location. MDMA? Sure, same again. Don't overdo the dancing.

This.

Wishyouwerehere50 · 11/04/2025 21:47

@BatchCookBabe some pretty extreme generalisations there.

A cuppa and special cake to relax this evening might help?

Aworldofwonder · 11/04/2025 21:48

I'm with you OP, I think it's pathetic behaviour. I was hardcore into the party scene in my 20s. I suffered. It was hard to turn things around. The only people I know who will insist drugs do no harm are still users.

And as for the hypocrisy of the organic food, ethical clothing, cocaine on the weekend wankers.

I have an old gang of friends that I don't see in a big group that often personally but they've all stayed extremely close. I was pleased a few years back to be included in plans for a holiday abroad. DH encouraged me to go and let my hair down. They spent the entire holiday behaving like your husband's friends. I was horrified. I was on my own the whole time. I kept thinking why bother coming to this beautiful place when all you're doing is getting wasted and shouting at each other. I realised why 25 years later they are all stuck together like glue.

Edited

😂😂😂 You must not know many people who smoke weed, then. Considering it’s legal in many states in the US, there are plenty of middle aged, middle class people in the world who partake.

Honestly, some of the pearl-clutching on this site is just beyond stereotypical Little England to me, it’s hilarious.

What a bizarre thing to do 🤣

The thought of someone getting a small amount of drugs off a dealer, to then go someone and out it up his bum because he hasn't got a better hiding place, is absolutely hilarious 🤣
