To ask how often you look at your bank account?

I’ve seen people say they check their balance every day, while others barely look at it unless something goes wrong. Some swear by keeping a close eye on their money, while others say ignorance is bliss.

How often do you check yours? Do you think it’s better to monitor it regularly or just go with the flow?

I check mine a couple of times each day. It’s just a habit

Starseeking · 11/04/2025 13:14

Whenever the app pings me so I can check it’s a transaction I know about.

Crushed23 · 11/04/2025 13:14

I was the victim of credit card fraud recently so I recommend checking accounts daily.

Zezet · 11/04/2025 13:35

At least once a day. Often there are surprises, too!

TubeScreamer · 11/04/2025 13:36

A few times a week. I usually go onto the app to transfer money to one of the children or to pay people, so check whilst I’m there.

FunnysInLaJardin · 11/04/2025 13:39

I check ours every morning just to make sure nothing has been taken. There has been fraudulent activity twice on my account so I like to keep a close eye

Every morning. Good to check in the event of internet fraud.

I was subjected to bank fraud at the beginning of this year. Since then I have set my account to send me a notification when there is any activity in the account.
It's not intrusive as I have my phone on silent most of the time and only get the notifications when I unlock my phone, but it does mean I don't actively have to login and look through; I would spot strange activity straight away.

I barely have any notifications on my phone (I like to choose when I engage with apps/people), but these are good.

PassingStranger · 11/04/2025 13:41

Every few days.

beesandstrawberries · 11/04/2025 13:42

Mostly every day. I’m quite organised with finances (because I don’t have a lot) and I have a spreadsheet to help me manage money. On this spreadsheet has my bills and what day they come out, and how much. So once something is paid I tick it off and make note of how much left I need to keep in my account for the rest of the bills.

i guess I have a fear of my bills bouncing and I ensure I always have the money in my account so they never will. Maybe it’s ott but yeah, long story short every day I check - even if it’s to glance

LimeLime · 11/04/2025 13:42

Since reading this thread I have checked it, and it was just as it should be, but honestly rarely do. I always thought my dad was being ridiculous checking his daily, but it seems that's the norm.

Back in the old days before online and telephone banking I used to use my card till it didn't work and then I'd deal with it. I know my dad despairs of my casual attitude towards money.

At least every couple of days but not every day now I get a notification of any transactions coming in or out.
Guess this habit started by working for the bank for 20 years so could check my accounts very easily every day before the times of online banking & apps.

I check mine every day on the banking app. A scammer intercepted my account a couple of years ago and set up a monthly withdrawal for a subscription to some obscure hairdressing magazine based in Malta.

I noticed it immediately and contacted the bank fraud number. They cancelled my card and the standing order that had been set up and blocked them. It was a small amount around £4 but the bank said if I hadn’t picked up on it the fraudsters would have come back for a bigger amount. I don’t go more than 24hrs without a quick browse on my transactions to see everything is as it should be.

Sorry Dueanamechange2025.
I didn’t mean to quote you there 😊

stanleypops66 · 11/04/2025 13:50

Every day as it’s so accessible on my phone.

mrsm43s · 11/04/2025 13:52

Our joint current "spends" account and my own personal "spends" account, once a week or so, but often as a by product of being in the app doing a transfer or similar.

Our various savings and investments? Very rarely, a couple of times a year maybe? But I can see all the money going into them by looking at the current accounts.

We're not short of money, so don't really need to keep tabs on anything. Checking is really to make sure that there's no fraudulent activity, and to see if we've built up an excess to get swiped over to savings.

Pickled21 · 11/04/2025 13:52

Most days but at least once a week. I'm self employed so have to keep track of who's paid my invoices and who needs a follow up reminder.

RockahulaRocks · 11/04/2025 12:32

Every day. I also have an app where I have envelopes and enter all my transactions so I know what money I have left for spending, travel, monthly bills etc. DH takes the piss mercilessly but I quite enjoy it!

What app is this please?

RockahulaRocks · 11/04/2025 15:01

Eileen101 · 11/04/2025 14:13

What app is this please?

I use Goodbudget. It gives you 10 free ‘envelopes’ which I use to organise money into pots and assign a monthly budget to them. It is a bit old school, and doesn’t link to your bank account like some though, so you have to add in your transactions against the relevant envelope as you spend them but you can schedule the recurring ones to reduce the effort and I’m not that keen on linking bank accounts left, right and center anyway.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 11/04/2025 15:03

A quick check most days.

FatherFrosty · 11/04/2025 15:03

I was financially abused so anything banking gives me complete anxiety, so I probably check a couple of times a year.

Hoppinggreen · 11/04/2025 15:04

I used to look at it around once a week but since we moved bank and have the app I look at least once a day, same with my Business Account

Slackbladder22 · 11/04/2025 15:09

Augustus40 · 11/04/2025 11:24

Every morning. Good to check in the event of internet fraud.

Yep this is what I do. I know what payments are due so will pick up anything untoward straight away

TheJoanCollins · 11/04/2025 15:19

Every morning.

On pay day, I transfer my wage into several different accounts (home, holiday, savings, etc). Then each morning, I transfer back any direct debits that are going out the next day. It means I rarely have a lot in my main account and hopefully protects me if my debit card is stolen or cloned. Food, clothing, etc is put on my credit card and paid off every month.

Left · 11/04/2025 15:53

Daily.
But I had my card cloned a few years ago so I am wary of that happening again.

24CRZZNKKA · 11/04/2025 16:04

Probably about 4 times a week
