One day old baby in pub

Frenchie01 · 09/04/2025 23:27

So family member gave birth to first baby yesterday afternoon, she's a very young mum only 17 , normal delivery but episiotomy, baby good weight healthy. Was discharged home today and a couple of hours later was at the local pub not drinking alcohol just showing baby off and eating a meal , but am I right in thinking a day old baby baby is really too young to be in a pub or anywhere really , also worried she should be resting as obviously will be sore. Other family members have said I'm being old fashioned am I.

This is ridiculous. There is a serious risk of haemorrhaging after childbirth. That is why people are advised to stay at home. Babies are susceptible to all kinds of illnesses being around lots of people.
I had my first when I was young and I stayed in for 3 weeks bonding as it’s such a precious time.

Nobody in the UK is advised to stay at home after they’ve had a baby.

As a midwife, I can confirm categorically this is absolute crapola. No one is discharged from hospital if they're at high risk of haemorrhage.

Home haemorrhages are less bad than pub ones?

Paramedics lose precious minutes having to show their ID to get into the pub

I was never advised to stay at home.

If the mother is well enough to leave hospital, she's well enough to have lunch at the pub if that is what she wants.

No, I wouldn’t. This thread will be full of competitive ‘I did the school run after 10 minutes’ but a baby’s immune system only takes 6 weeks to mature and after that point serious complications of colds and bugs are far less likely. I don’t think that’s too much to ask tbh? Just 6 weeks with family visits, park walks etc, and take them busier places after that. No medal for parading a baby around at 1 day old.

What difference is there if baby gets a cold from a family member during a home visit or a family member when at the pub?

She wasn't after a medal, just a nice meal 🤷‍♀️

Far more likely in a crowded indoor area full of the public. Family, I like to think, would be considerate enough to say in advance if they were ill.

I wouldn’t risk my baby’s health for a nice meal in a pub, I would just order one to my house or have somebody make one for me.

No your not, I'm actually surprised how normal everyone else seems to think this is. With all my babies got the first month I kept outings very minimal to be honest especially as newborn immune systems are still weak and building up. I did the school run prob from the 2nd week in guessing it's been a while, but of all places to get a meal at pub I don't know just sounds so wrong. I don't know it did concern mean reading this post. I would have just wanted to go home to my own comfort and rest. Yesss by day 3/4 or week in I'd prob just want a breather but not on day 1 that's just weird. Yes I stopped at my mums when I left the hospital for prob less than hour but it's not the same & it's not a public place. Also get a takeaway!!!

Newborn immune systems aren’t weak. That’s a fallacy seemingly made up by people on this thread. Babies have immunity from their mothers for the first few weeks of life. Why do you think first jabs aren’t till 8 weeks?

That's assuming it was crowded. Why would it be crowded during a weekday afternoon?

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 11/04/2025 19:47

Which works fine with the first baby, but who’s going to do the school/nursery run if the mother is stuck inside for 3 weeks? It’s just not practical.

School run isn’t the same as the pub. You’re outside, the risk of transmission is much lower.

Maybe there was a big race meeting that all the regulars weee watching on the TV 😆

Why wouldn’t it be? Small pub, popular venue, nice weather, lunchtime deals? The pub on our office road would be heaving with office workers on their lunch break as they did good lunch deals.

People going to pubs because it's nice weather of the type the UK has had this wee will sit outside.

Ultimately, we have no idea about how many people were in the pub. What that means is that nobody should be assuming.

I’ve had a number of haemorrhages, and I can say quite categorically I’d much prefer to have a medic spread my legs and insert their fist to attempt to stop the bleeding in the privacy of my own home rather than on a pub carpet.

No but equally we can’t assume it was empty.

A 1 day old baby should be at home or out in the fresh air with mum, not in a pub. Yes I’m sure there will be ‘judgy fucker’ type responses but I stand by that. If you choose to have a baby the least you can do is put them first for a few weeks until their immune system is a bit stronger.

Our local pub would have some people in it at that time but it wouldn't be crowded and if it was nice weather, it would be even less crowded inside because people would be more likely to be sat outside. Maybe she even sat outside?

Then no assumption should be made at all. And you made one when you suggested that seeing family members at home for 6 weeks would be less risky than being in a pub. It's absolutely possible that seeing family for 6 weeks will involve more people and more risk than being in a pub on day 1, there's no getting round that one.

None of this is affected by your subjective take on where a 1 day old baby should be, I'm not arsed about that part. But if you're going to try and quantfy risk, do it without making things up.

BoldAmberDuck · 11/04/2025 21:41

I stayed home 10 days which was the general advice back in the 80’s. I can’t imagine wanting to go to the pub, I just wanted to protect my fragile new human

You’re assuming that if she visits the pub, that no relatives will visit for six weeks. An either/or. ‘This’ is just as twisty as ‘this’.

In reality, the relatives will still be visiting. So the risk of the pub visit will be in addition to the visiting relatives.

*Editing to remove autocorrect from ‘risky’ to ‘twisty’ but I quite like it so I’ll leave it in.

Maybe. But a pub is no place for a 1 day old. I don’t care if that makes me boring.
