To expect barman to know what a lemon and lime is.

Couldn't believe it today. Had this drink loads with no problem.

Barman had no clue what a lemon and lime was. Gave up and ordered something else, a coffee instead.

It's not a niche drink, it was an extremely common order when I worked behind a bar.

OK but the vast majority of people on this thread haven't heard of it so depending how long they've worked in a bar it's not that surprising he didn't know what it was.
Obviously he should then have asked and it sounds straightforward enough to make.

Although I'd need to ask her how much cordial she wanted.

Thighdentitycrisis · 09/04/2025 20:45

Lime and lemonade rings a bell. Not what you asked for. Having said that , I asked for a lime and soda recently and the barman asked if I wanted a soda with a piece of lime in it too!

DysmalRadius · 09/04/2025 20:46

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the arcane knowledge of how to make a St Clements has become too niche as well... 😭

Chipperchipmunk · 09/04/2025 20:47

I looooove a lemon and lime and a Saint Clements (orange juice and lemonade) but this thread has made me laugh and realise I no would never order it as a ‘lemon and lime’ in a bar bc I have had people not know what it is and if they do know they always ask if you want fresh lime or cordial. I ask for a lemonade and lime cordial

Tbrh · 09/04/2025 20:47

All I know is lemon, lime and bitters. I've never heard of a lemon and lime (but also I'm not a bar person!)

Lovelysummerdays · 09/04/2025 20:47

I wonder if this is a regional thing. I’m Scottish and lemon and lime / lime and soda is a normal thing or used to be. It’s been a while. Pubs always used to have three bottles of cordial. Lime, blackcurrant ( mainly for cider) and orange (I think that was for stray children).

nam3c4ang3 · 09/04/2025 20:48

wtf is a lemon and lime 😂

Proudofthem · 09/04/2025 20:49

If I'm driving I always have a lemonade with a dash of lime.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 09/04/2025 20:49

Why wouldn't you say lemonade? Lemonade and lime, nobody could be confused by that.

If someone asked me for lemon and lime I'd have to check what they meant.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 09/04/2025 20:50

Are you from the Midlands? Lemon and Lime very popular when I was a kid, but very sweet. Regularly have soda and lime as a soft drink unless there's something non-alcoholic with elderflower

JHound · 09/04/2025 20:50

I have worked behind a bar and would not know what a lemon and lime is. What is it?

CheesyRaver · 09/04/2025 20:50

Lemon and lime is common here (Sw) see also lager and lime, lemon and black, lager and black and lager top.

Doesn’t sound that traumatic to be honest. I’ve never heard of it! It’s not something I ever had ordered in my 4 years of bar work.

Gobsmacked by this, I order it every time I’m at the pub

howdoyoudooooo · 09/04/2025 20:51

xxlostxx · 09/04/2025 20:09

Lime and soda it would be referred to in these parts and is very commonly known. Did nobody ever order it phrased as that?

No, that’s not the same drink. Lime and soda has nothing to do with lemon. It’s literally lime; and soda. OP is talking about lemonade and lime.

bakebeans · 09/04/2025 20:51

girlfriend44 · 09/04/2025 20:00

Yes that happened, but he still didn't get it as there was a queue I gave up.

You see I would ask for a lemonade with a fresh lime. Can’t stand that lime cordial shit

EffortlesslyInelegant · 09/04/2025 20:51

I think we may have reached peak 'OK then' with this thread.

DysmalRadius · 09/04/2025 20:51

Has the Muddy Puddle gone the same way too? (Orange juice and coke for those that want to try one...)

Yes! Was my mom's 😉 drink of choice in pubs. And it's 'lime and lemon'. I want one now.

JaneBoulton · 09/04/2025 20:54

girlfriend44 · 09/04/2025 20:15

Read the thread I did.

But you could've just said please may I have a lemonade with some like cordial in the first instance.
I think you just wanted to sound 'cool.'

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 09/04/2025 20:55

I'm completely surprised at bar people on here never having heard it before! I've often ordered a lemonade and lime over the past 30 years and have never had so much as a look of confusion!! It's totally normal where I am (London/Herts).

LittleTwiggy · 09/04/2025 20:56

I thought you meant he didn’t know the fruits! Now that I’d be shocked by. Never heard of the drink though. Maybe a regional thing?

queenofthesuburbs · 09/04/2025 20:56

OP I would also call it Lemon and Lime and my mother (a Londoner) drinks this all the time on hot summer days.

It is indeed very refreshing!!

The three extra letters "ade" make a big difference between your clear request and OP's ambiguous one

Napface · 09/04/2025 20:56

I used to have it when I went to the pub with my parents in the 90s...I haven't seen or heard of it since though. I fancy one now 😂 you're making me all nostalgic

Nobody's disputing it's an everyday drink. It's whether everyone would know that 'lemon and lime' is actually lemonade and lime and not something else like Sprite or a bitter lemon with lime.
