To expect barman to know what a lemon and lime is.

Couldn't believe it today. Had this drink loads with no problem.

Barman had no clue what a lemon and lime was. Gave up and ordered something else, a coffee instead.

When I started working in a bar someone asked me for a lager and lime, so I served them a pint with a lime wedge in it. Safe to say he was not impressed 😂 maybe give the barman the benefit of the doubt that he just hadn't encountered it before

This reminds me of an anecdote about Diane Morgan who was fired from the Last Drop Village Tea Room for serving a cup of tea with cream in it to a customer who asked for a Cream Tea.

It makes total sense really, if you've never known that a Cream Tea was Tea with a Scone with Cream and Jam.

Rewis · 09/04/2025 21:21

I'd assume you were asking a drink with some lemon and lime and I had missed the first part that was the actual drink 😅

MinkyWales · 09/04/2025 21:21

St Clements was always made with bitter lemon in my day too.

The really old boys in my pub used to drink Rum and Shrub, and Brandy and Pep. The older ladies drank port and lemon, barleywine, or gin and bitter lemon.

I once had an argument with a barman who insisted that ginger ale and ginger beer were the same thing (I'd ordered a gin and ginger ale and got ginger beer). He refused to believe they were separate beverages, despite me showing him the words on the label (and yes the pub sold both). I don't think he could accept he had made a mistake...

I would have said lemonade and lime rather than lemon and lime, but I would have had a pretty good idea and checked before pouring.

Edited

I had a similar argument with a waiter in a coffee shop. He insisted green tea and peppermint tea are the same as 'peppermint is green' 🙄. I gave up in the end as you can't fix stupid.

augustusglupe · 09/04/2025 21:29

I love a Lime n Lemon. I’d expect them to know what one was too OP
I had one at a country pub last summer after a long hike. DH ordered & they knew what to do.

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/04/2025 21:29

Told this on here before about bitter lemon.

Many years ago we were in a Chinese restaurant and my mother ordered a bitter lemon. Our drinks took AGES and when they finally arrived she got a pint of bitter with a slice of lemon in it.

Completely understandable though given that the guy who was running the bar had grown up in China!

ethelredonagoodday · 09/04/2025 21:30

I know what it is OP, but I must admit I did have to think about it for a few seconds. Used to drink it as a kid and was a barmaid in my student years and pre kids, but it’s a while since I’ve heard it mentioned!

SheridansPortSalut · 09/04/2025 21:33

I hope that you didn't reply to the poor barman with the same sarcasm and eye roll that you've replied with here.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/04/2025 21:33

I'm missing peppermint lemonade now.

Or anything with lemonade given that anything non-artisan is ruined with digusting artificial sweeteners (and if I want a stonking headache, I'd have gone for alcohol and enjoyed feeling merry first!)

If Roses Lime Cordial is avaliable, lime and soda is lovely and refreshing.

I once made the mistake of asking for a chip butty in a chip shop... chips in a bap... chips in a cob... chips in a barm... chips in a bread roll... eventually I ended up with chips in a grotty sweet burger bun 🤢

Baconmaple · 09/04/2025 20:30

I haven't heard of it either. Do bars have lime cordial?
It sounds like it might be old fashioned maybe and not a normal option.

If I'm driving I drink lime and soda and have yet to visit anywhere that doesn't have lime cordial

I would have guessed what lemon and lime might be but haven't heard it as the name of a drink

LongDistanceClara44 · 09/04/2025 21:36

Not had one for years but craving it now

I ordered a lime soda in a pub the other day - same response, not a clue.

To be frank, I would probably stop and think twice about that. And this is from a person who regularly orders a "soda water and lime" and have no problems with people understanding me.

I think it's putting the word "lime" first that is the problem. You appear to be asking for some particular sort of soda water rather than just soda water with lime added.

I agree, sounds like they are asking for an American style fizzy pop like a Cream Soda say. Lime AND soda makes all the difference.

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 20:18

@Latenightreader thanks.
I have always assumed they would be the same thing.
To be honest the only Ginger Beer I have ever had it probably the cans made by Barrs.

I worked as a barmaid for a week before we parted company with the immortal words “there’s your wage packet and a steak dinner waiting for you upstairs, then that’s us done.”. Spent a happy hour with one customer trying to work out what a Whiskey Mac is. We tried quite a few combinations. I think it was one of the things that contributed to my short lived career

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 09/04/2025 20:17

Oh, I see you've answered. (Sounds gross btw!)

Next time you know - it's not as well known as you thought, so just describe what you want rather than giving it a nickname.

Can I ask why you think it sounds gross? Lemonade and lime?

Anyway OP, I know what it is, and very surprised at the number of posters who havent, I didn't realise it was so unheard of!

Whisky Mac is actually made with Ginger Wine, which is something else entirely, just to add to the confusion!

BrightOrangeDahlias · 09/04/2025 21:43

I'm really surprised by the vote - I thought lime and lemonade was a standard pub drink!

girlfriend44 · 09/04/2025 20:12

It's lemonade with some lime cordial.
Served with some ice, it's a gorgeous drink on a warm day.🙄

How did you describe this to the bar tender? I find it hard to believe anyone can’t understand lemonade with a dash of lime cordial

People aren't disputing that Lime and Lemonade isn't a common pub drink.

It's that the OP called it "Lemon and Lime" and expected the bar man to know exactly what she meant.

Ollybob · 09/04/2025 21:46

Whiskey Mac rings a bell but can't remember what's in it!
Lemon and lime to me anyway is obvious, been working in bars on and off since 1998.
Also remember snakebites, black and tan, lager tops, St Clements amongst others since forgotten!

Zanatdy · 09/04/2025 21:46

a lime and lemonade - or a lime & soda. Lemon & Lime, never heard it described as that, but shouldn’t be too hard to describe a glass of lemonade with a dash of lime cordial surely?

Unless you're Jim from Friday Night Dinner

PinkCherryPie · 09/04/2025 21:51

I can't quite believe the amount of people who have never heard of it!
I would confuse things further asking for a lemon, lime and bitters (although not at all common in the UK most bars are able to make one when I explain what it is, some already do know).

Did he not speak English?

I don't for one second believe any semi-functioning human would have been unable to understand that tbh.

Sounds like you wanted to make a point and flounced.

I wouldn't know which of these it is:

Lemonade plus lime juice (from an actual lime? How much?)

Some type of pre-made cordial

Lemonade mixed with lime cordial

Lemon & Lime fizzy eg Sprite

Something else entirely
