What would you HONESTLY do in this situation?

Say you ordered a few items from a big online shop (clothing), then successfully cancelled the order, and was refunded.

A few days later, you ordered a single item of clothing from the same place. Today that item was delivered, however they had also sent the items you had cancelled and was refunded for (probably around £120 worth of stuff).

Would you contact them about it or would you keep quiet, see if they emailed you about it and if you didn’t hear anything say 3-4 weeks down the line, just keep the items as normal? This is a place you regularly order from, spending between £300-400 a month.

What would you HONESTLY do?

I'd contact them. I'd be irritated but not want to steal.

TinyTear · 09/04/2025 13:45

Still? do you need 4 new items of clothing a month?

What has that got to do with anything exactly?

Ddakji · 09/04/2025 13:48

I would keep them as you suggest, wait a bit and then they’re mine.

Though I do think buying stuff and returning it because you can no longer afford it is taking the piss, and is why more places are getting rid of free delivery and returns.

roses2 · 09/04/2025 13:48

You spend £300/month on clothes and rarely leave the house as you are disabled?

It was unexpected and I cancelled before it was dispatched

I don’t drink, smoke or anything like that so yes I like to treat myself to clothes - where’s the harm in that? I also never said I rarely leave the house, I can just never predict a flare up and when that happens, I can struggle to go out until it settles down

Oh, fair enough then.

I completely agree about if it was a small business, there would be no hesitation!

So are you looking for justification for your planned dishonesty from random strangers on the internet @Friends1996 ?

Look, I get your thinking - a huge company. A couple of hundred pounds is nothing to them.

But you still have to live with yourself. I'm surprised it's even a question, but then . I know my own ethical boundaries.

Fleurdalys · 09/04/2025 13:51

Mehhhh
Keep them

Coali · 09/04/2025 12:35

This has happened to me a few times and I contacted them. Once the value was low and they said to keep it. The other times they have arranged collection.

I don’t think it matters whether it’s a big or small business, the people working there aren’t on megabucks so if profits fall, staff are the first to go.

This its happened to me a few of times and I have contacted the company each time.

WhatColourIsThatBalloon · 09/04/2025 13:52

PaintYourAssLikeRembrandt · 09/04/2025 12:27

I wouldn't say anything and see what happens, and I wouldn't feel guilty bout keeping the clothes if they didn't contact me either.

If it was a small business my answer would be different.

This.

TheWolfHouse · 09/04/2025 13:53

I 100% would tell them and have done in similar circumstances. I was asked to return a fancy new limited edition gaming system I was once sent by mistake by Amazon but otherwise am usually told to keep the items. That means I’ve been honest and I get free stuff. It doesn’t make any difference if it’s a big company or not. I like being an honest person. I get value from it. I’d expect the company to make it easy to return the items.
I find people that try and justify dishonesty a bit pathetic tbh. If you are happy to keep stuff that isn’t yours then at least accept that’s where your moral standard lies and don’t try to pretend it’s justifiable.

Such a weird comment, with a touch of ableism I'd argue.

EasternEcho · 09/04/2025 13:55

Similar happened to me, although in my case I went through the steps for checkout but didn't input my card details. Aborted the purchase without putting in payment details as I felt I couldn't afford them at that moment. But a day later I got confirmation that my order has been despatched. I informed the company of the error, and refused the package when it arrived, so it got returned. I got an email thanking me, and a sizeable discount on my next order.. I wouldn't keep it. Wouldn't feel good about myself.

JustMyView13 · 09/04/2025 13:56

I would honestly contact them. I couldn’t sleep soundly if I had it hanging over me. I believe what goes around comes around, and ultimately their inventories and tracking will show you have the product.

I would ask them to arrange a collection method that’s convenient for me though. I wouldn’t be put out to return it.

I probably would try it on, and anything I liked I’d re-buy.

Friends1996 · 09/04/2025 13:39

I’ve never returned anything to them, the order was cancelled and refunded before it was dispatched

You spend £300-400 a month with this retailer but have never returned anything to them?

I genuinely can't imagine spending that in clothes a month but even if I did, I can't imagine ordering clothes online so regularly and never needing to return anything because it was too big/small/ weird fabric/ didn't suit me.

It's all very odd.

Magnastorm · 09/04/2025 13:57

Momtotwokids · 09/04/2025 13:47

You are stealing. Doesn't matter if the business is small or amazon

Yep.

This argument that screwing over big companies is somehow ok compared to ma and pa's corner shop is utter bullshit. Theft is theft.

Big companies can fail just as easily as small companies. Remember BHS? Littlewoods? Topshop? The list is endless. Each time they fail people lose their jobs and lives suffer, the same as for little companies.

Sayithowiseeit · 09/04/2025 13:58

Keep it somewhere safe, see if they email, if they do then return, if they don't then keep them

snowmichael · 09/04/2025 14:00

Obviously parcel them up, and email the supplier
If they don't reply within 10 working days, or they expect you to post them back at your own expense, keep them

They have the same style of clothing, just in different colours and patterns, so once you know your size you know your size. I’ve liked every piece of clothing I’ve got from them

OP posts:
orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 09/04/2025 14:01

Keep them.

It's not stealing. They sent you a parcel, addressed to you. It's yours. People send unsolicited parcels and gifts all the time.

Stealing is walking into a shop and taking things off the shelf.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/04/2025 14:01

I'd probably tell them but I wouldn't be going out of my way to send them back. They could collect them with a one hour time slot. I might be more accommodating to a small business but I still wouldn't go out of my way to rectify their error.

If they told me to keep them I'd sell them if they didn't fit or didn't like them or keep them if I'd ordered multiple items and kept some but returned others.

cramptramp · 09/04/2025 14:01

I’d contact them. It wouldn’t occur to me to do anything else.

Hwi · 09/04/2025 14:03

Amazing how people ask these questions and then say 'oh, no, the country's gone to shit'. Of course it has, if people are even thinking about things like that.
