Going out shopping in your pyjamas

AIBU to think it's lazy and slovenly?

OP posts:

How long does it take to chuck on a pair of leggings and a sweater?..I feel a bit queasy when I see people in PJ's shopping....I always wonder if they've got pants on underneath and if they do, are they ones they've slept in all night or fresh... because what's the point of changing your underwear then putting your pjs back on...you may as well get dressed at the point.

Anyway....gross.

Richiewoo · 09/04/2025 12:56

Still aren't going out clothes though.

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 12:57

Corinthiana · 09/04/2025 12:29

Me too 😅!!
Pieces of fabric, eh?
How we present ourselves says a good deal. Very few people regard dressing themselves in "pieces of fabric".
Interviews, weddings, funerals, court cases, holidays, parties.... I think most people understand that there's a societal expectation of dress for occasion.

Personally I think most of the outfits people wear at weddings look ridiculous.
So..... whatever 🤷

TennesseeStella · 09/04/2025 12:58

It's totally skanky. Get dressed if you're going to be in public places, including going to breakfast in a hotel.

Yes! Most people look like they're in fancy dress as "wedding guest".

We should all care because it brings society as a whole a little step further down.

Recently, there have been several threads about the fall in standards-people spitting, being aggressive, littering, fly tipping, fucking and blinding in public- all leading to a general feeling of unease in the air.

Not being bothered to get dressed before going out to the shops is just one more piece of the jigsaw puzzle-people with no respect for themselves, for others or for wider society.

Should they be judged and found wanting? Yes, they should-alongside their spitting, littering, cursing, aggressive cousins.

Agree with this. Occasionally see pyjamas, dressing gowns and slippers at school drop off and find it depressing tbh 🤷‍♀️

lnks · 09/04/2025 13:00

Does this really actually happen though? I’ve never since it once.

I find people that can't bare to leave the house without a face full of make up, fancy nails and wearing "labels" because they feel they have to "fit in" more depressing tbh.

Bluecheesebonkers · 09/04/2025 11:49

100% agree. There is nothing more slovenly than lingering in your pjs. Grim. Why do people not think more of themselves? Why do they have such poor personal standards. It’s disgusting. If I saw someone sat next to me in the cinema in PJs I’d ask for a refund.

You know what's grim? Attitudes like yours. That's grim.

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 11:53

@BarneyRonson Is it "scummy" if they are a clean and freshly ironed pair?

So there are people who would make the effort to iron their pyjamas, yet changing into a pair of jeans plus sweatshirt or whatever is too much work?

Comedycook · 09/04/2025 13:03

It is depressing...it's like a sign you've given up any semblance of leading a respectable life

FastnetLundyRockall · 09/04/2025 13:03

I viewed a house once which was ok ish, but a woman in pyjamas and dressing gown walking out a few doors down brought out my inner Hyacinth and was one of the reasons I didn’t offer. It just looks scuzzy.

Yes, that too. I find puffy lips and orange foundation sad. Like you have lost all sense of proportion due to the need to look a certain way, but there is a middle ground. It’s called putting on a pair of clean jeans and a jumper before you come downstairs in the morning. It’s not hard.

One can find both depressing. Personally, I don’t even wear makeup, never mind a full face of it, and don’t care about labels.

Jeans are painful on my stomach.
Sweatshirts are too hot for me.
If I wanna wear elasticated loose bottoms and a t-shirt (aka PJ's) then why shouldn't I?

soninthesun · 09/04/2025 13:04

I wouldn’t personally but I do me, then I don’t judge others for doing them.

AlwaysPerfumed · 09/04/2025 13:05

Interesting @Needmorelego that you jump to the other extreme. There is a very very wide space in between wearing pyjamas in the street and being unable to go out with a designer label.

I'm guessing you're a pyjama wearer. Interesting to have an insight into the mind set.

Aha, I see your problem. You have bought clothes that don’t fit.

I never wear jeans....hate them. There's all manner of proper clothes you can wear instead

Arraminta · 09/04/2025 13:07

Of course. And this is why I drive 12 miles to shop at Waitrose rather than use our local, vast Asda which should have above the entrance "Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here."

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 13:09

@AlwaysPerfumed glad to be of assistance 😂
My mindset is I need to be comfortable in my overweight and sweaty menopausal body.
The clothes I wear are always clean.
They just happen to generally be sold in the pj section of Primark.

Like what?
Seriously I struggle.
Formal trousers also hurt my stomach.
I am short so dresses and skirts look ridiculous on me.
Trackies are usually to hot.

I wear harem pants...my favourite are from next and they have an elasticated waist...they are fab

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 13:14

@Comedycook yes I do have a few pairs of haram pants but if you place them together with my various pj bottoms you couldn't really tell which are which.
They are pretty much the same thing.

StarStay · 09/04/2025 13:15

What are you classing as PJs?
Are you including loungewear in that (like joggers?)

I've definitely walked about the supermarket in loungewear before
