Going out shopping in your pyjamas

AIBU to think it's lazy and slovenly?

I find the pyjama debate highly amusing. As a teenager doing a hairdressing/barbering apprenticeship, I worked in a few barber shops when younger. I can categorically tell you that there is a 'just got out of bed body odour' that I also associate with grey joggers and a (sometimes) resident bum crack-no underwear. Gross.
I find it's very much a demographic thing. Poorer areas and it was quite common - ABC1 demographic, only had one who had serious mental health issues.
Personally, my dream is to treat myself to a pair of silk pyjamas-I'm short so can't find any short enough, - been looking for years, but I'll skip wearing to Tesco when I do find them 😁

Ihateboris · 09/04/2025 12:12

I prefer pj's than those disgusting skin coloured leggings and cropped tops that leave nothing to the imagination.

I don't think I've seen anybody shopping in their pyjamas since "Covid times" most people are dressed in outdoor clothes now.

I saw it this morning hence my post. A woman in the local Morrisons buying bread milk and bacon in Victoria's Secret pyjamas.

I personally wouldn't feel comfortable doing it but I don't really look twice if I see a mum on the school run doing it or something, it seems fairly common where I live.

I even hate walking round the house or eating breakfast in my pyjamas! I don't know why, but it feels really slovenly to me. I think it's fine for other people to do that, but not to go out in them. I always get up, washed and dressed before anything else.

Me too - i work from home 4 days a week too, straight up and dressed, doesn't have to be fancy clothes and full make up etc, but its clothes not pyjamas. They are for bed, they are not designed to be worn all the time, are not warm
When you get dressed you are giving your brain the kick start that your day is beginning,

This is exactly what I was thinking, are you me? 🤣

BarneyRonson · 09/04/2025 12:20

Do you want to see men in their pyjamas in your supermarket?

do you want your children around men in their pyjamas in you local park?

NicolaDeLaHaye · 09/04/2025 12:20

I'll have a pyjamas day at home sometimes but it's always clean PJs after a shower.

OP posts:
MyIvyGrows · 09/04/2025 12:21

It’s not for me (and I’d be horrified if I saw any of my friends or family doing it) but you’ll get a load of people saying that they change into fresh pyjamas for the daytime so it’s fine 🤣

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 09/04/2025 12:22

Is it just shopping? I walk the dog in my pyjamas quite often (only around the village where we live though) because I go running then get home and shower and put my PJs back on and I am NOT getting dressed for the million small walks a day that the dog insists on. She already dictates enough of my life, I'm not going to let her tell me when I have to be dressed!

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 11:47

Yawn !
This is one of those threads that happens every week.
What difference does it make to you if someone does this?
Why does it matter?
It's their life not yours.
Who cares?

We should all care because it brings society as a whole a little step further down.

Recently, there have been several threads about the fall in standards-people spitting, being aggressive, littering, fly tipping, fucking and blinding in public- all leading to a general feeling of unease in the air.

Not being bothered to get dressed before going out to the shops is just one more piece of the jigsaw puzzle-people with no respect for themselves, for others or for wider society.

Should they be judged and found wanting? Yes, they should-alongside their spitting, littering, cursing, aggressive cousins.

Purplebunnie · 09/04/2025 12:26

I think it's very lazy, chavvy, tacky whatever handle you want to give it but it's where we are with society today. No one really cares about anything anymore, the litter on the streets, the state of our towns to quote another thread.

People are not going to change, it's a shame and whilst I would never go out in my PJ's I never feel smart when I go out anymore

Saveafun · 09/04/2025 12:27

Growing up, I never saw Mum downstairs without being fully dressed. How times have changed.

I more or less followed her principles for my first 50 years, but do sometimes use PJs as "lounge" clothes now, not the ones I sleep in though, although I wouldn't put the bins out in them!

I had a breakthrough moment when fairly early on in my current realtionship, BF messaged to ask if I wanted to watch some more of the TV series we'd been watching. I sold he was welcome to come but I was in my PJs after showering after run. TBH it's not that different to the joggers he'd turn up in for such an occasion (he's very smart when we go out!). His car is off the road for a fee days and he needed a lift home late last night. It felt almost rebellious to do it in my PJs 🤣 I actually think I look better in my "nice" PJs than in joggers or other comfy clothes.

As for others, they can set their own standards. I have fairly recently come to realise that huge numbers of the population have really very tough lives, which I can't being to understand from my secure upbringing, supportive relationships, good education, good MH standpoint. So I'm not going to judge.

Corinthiana · 09/04/2025 12:27

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 11:54

Says who?
I generally don't sleep in Pjs.
I do however wear them in the daytime.

I believe that's the very definition. However. You choose to wear pyjamas as daywear. Your choice.
I have a job with a dress code. I wouldn't be allowed to wear nightwear as daywear, even if that was my thing.

Corinthiana · 09/04/2025 12:29

Needmorelego · 09/04/2025 11:56

I love a good anti-pyjamas thread 😂😂😂😂
These things always get so fun.
It's pieces of fabric people...... that's all.

Me too 😅!!
Pieces of fabric, eh?
How we present ourselves says a good deal. Very few people regard dressing themselves in "pieces of fabric".
Interviews, weddings, funerals, court cases, holidays, parties.... I think most people understand that there's a societal expectation of dress for occasion.

I agree, it's definitely psychological.

Richiewoo · 09/04/2025 12:36

It's vile. These people clearly have no standards.

Why not get dressed in clothes not PJs after your shower? It’s no big effort. It shows the world you care about yourself, you have pride.

I wouldn't walk the dog PJs either and only put on PJs after a shower if it's in the evening and I'm not going out, but equivalent comfy clothes are no smarter?

BogRollBOGOF · 09/04/2025 12:44

Pyjamas are often thinner material than standard clothing so more likely to reveal what people are (or aren't) wearing underneath.

A dresing gown in the supermarket was not the worst sartorial choice I saw the other day (strangely, over regular clothes)
Later on there was a woman walking down the road in what could best be described as a child's ra-ra skirt (I have seen peplums with more coverage). Alas she was only wearing a thong (I presume!) underneath so was a full-on exposure of the lower half of both buttocks, a sight I don't wish to see (on either sex) while going around town!
(No beaches within 80 miles either, so not beachwear)

A minimum standard of covering intimate body parts in sturdy fabric is no bad thing for society. It's also mentally healthy to swap between day wear and night wear.

KhakiOrca · 09/04/2025 12:44

I wonder if it's PIP claimants who say they can't dress themselves. And could be scared they are being watched. Because it's gross if they genuinely can get dressed. Seeing it more and more lately. Always seems to be women too.

Most men don't actually wear PJ's.

gmgnts · 09/04/2025 12:51

Ha Ha 😅What a judgemental lot you are! You won't find anyone more consistently smartly dressed than me - up with the lark and straight into 'going out' clothes, with make up, necklace and earrings, despite the fact that I hardly ever go out. But that's my choice. However, I couldn't give a toss what other people are wearing - PJs to the shops are OK. I'm just back from a large funeral, where a number of the men didn't even have a tie or jacket on (sweatshirts and t-shirts for some), but at least they had turned up to pay their respects. Standards of dress in public are changing and I guess in 10 years' time PJs may be even more common than now, and not a cause for negative comment.

singlewhitetrashheap · 09/04/2025 12:53

I've done it and don't care. People go shopping in normal clothes and look just as crap. My PJs are excellent.

My PJ's are usually the best quality clothes I own.
