Gucci or Goochi??

Over the years I’ve collected handbags. I’ve been feeling down on myself so treated myself to a new Gucci bag. My friend came round with a similar style. She admitted to me it was fake! I put them side by side. Hers was slightly brighter gold. Otherwise, no difference! Am I unreasonable to now think a lot of people own fake and I’ve wasted my money and should maybe buy a fake for when I go on nights out so I don’t worry it gets ruined. I cannot believe the quality of fakes. I’ve never looked as my perception is off some market stall and terrible. Before people say they fund crime, all clothes come from sweatshops really and these are coming from China and the whole business is set up to replicate fakes. Feel naive and like I’ve wasted a lot of money

If you think a cheapo would work as well as a real one you just wanted to belong with those who can afford one. You wasted your money.

Fair enough but the whole experience has changed of buying a bag. I got it from flannels and I didn’t even get it in a box. Maybe I should buy vintage as they feel more quality

I bought.a longchamp tote from Ebay- bnwt. It was about half the price of the ones from the longchamp website. When it arrived I did some research etc to check if it was a fake. It was. I bought one from longchamp.directly - they were so so similar. The fake didn't have real leather handles but this was difficult to tell and they needed to be side by side to see the difference. I sent the ebay one back. I see so so many longchamp totes these days and I presume a significant number are fake. I sometimes feel like a mug but also I wouldn't want a fake designer item. If you can't afford the original why do you want to pretend you can? It just seems like an unnecessarily silly thing to do, pretending to be wealthier than you are? Why? Just buy a bag you can afford that you love. Designer should be about quality. If it's not then you've probably been scammed or the company is more likely to take it back if it doesn't last very long or send a replacement. It's just a bit tacky to knowingly walk around with a fake.

My perception of this changed when I got given two ‘Hermes’ bags. I got them because my fil’s boss died (he was the gardener) as they couldn’t go to auction because they were fake. And I realised the old money wealthy do not necessarily buy real stuff…because this stuff is about perception.

I thought it was tacky until my friend who owns the fake is quite capable of buying the real thing. She’d just rather spend her money on other stuff 🤷🏻‍♀️ so it’s me who feels silly. I’m talking near perfect replica and I have a beady eye! And when people say why? I own a few Demellier handbags. I think the style and structure is beautiful. Never received a compliment. I take the Gucci out. Everyone complimented it. I don’t need the compliments. Yet it shows what people like so naturally you do like to wear what others love

YABU. A fake is fake who would want that. Either have the real thing or not at all

Exactly. I thought it was them who bought the fakes as they are targets of burglaries and on holiday it’s safer to travel with a fake. For someone middle of the road like myself I’ve never bought fake as a birkin is too bougie for me

I think Gucci, LV, and other bags with logos and monograms plastered all over them look very tacky.

I'd buy something nice that wasn't easily identifiable.

Could anyone recommend a quiet luxury brand. Similar to Demellier? I want something others don’t have that stands out

Why?? Go shopping, find a bag you like, buy it. Who cares if it’s got a luxury brand on it? My SIL has a mulberry bag and feels the need to mention it frequently…”oh, careful you don’t trip over my MULBERRY handbag…” she sounds like a twat! Nobody cares.

I have some beautiful strathberry bags for the lower end and I prefer them to mulberry tbh.

I have a lot of designer high end bags and you definitely can tell the difference between them a fake as a couple of friends have fakes. I’d rather have the real thing than a fake tbh.

I regularly get compliments on my handbags. I buy them because I like them and they're the right size. They're not expensive in the slightest, just unique.

This might be a thick question, is there anything on that bag that would identify it as being Gucci to someone who doesn't necessarily have any knowledge of designer handbags (like me!) or even to someone who has some knowledge? I can't see the Gucci logo so wouldn't look at it and immediately identify it as a Gucci bag, I'd just be thinking "that handbag is beautiful"

The snaffle bit fastening is very much part of the Gucci look and heritage. I also think it’s a beautiful, elegant bag but the price is crazy to me.

The price is insane, however if I was wealthy a beautiful designer handbag would definitely be my absolute weakness. My feet don't fit beautiful shoes (too long and wide) but a handbag always fits!
