Gucci or Goochi??

Over the years I’ve collected handbags. I’ve been feeling down on myself so treated myself to a new Gucci bag. My friend came round with a similar style. She admitted to me it was fake! I put them side by side. Hers was slightly brighter gold. Otherwise, no difference! Am I unreasonable to now think a lot of people own fake and I’ve wasted my money and should maybe buy a fake for when I go on nights out so I don’t worry it gets ruined. I cannot believe the quality of fakes. I’ve never looked as my perception is off some market stall and terrible. Before people say they fund crime, all clothes come from sweatshops really and these are coming from China and the whole business is set up to replicate fakes. Feel naive and like I’ve wasted a lot of money

What is the difference in cost. Where do you even get fake bags in this country? Would they even be accessible to you?

Apparently she got hers shipped in from China so people must just be doing it online.

I think Gucci, LV, and other bags with logos and monograms plastered all over them look very tacky.

I'd buy something nice that wasn't easily identifiable.

I agree. I'm turned off by anything designer with the logo emblazoned loudly across it. A discreet name tag, fine. Repeated LV...not for me.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/04/2025 07:33

So your main priority isn't that you particularly like the look of a bag, it's that it's expensive and exclusive, and that you won't end up feeling put out because someone else will have a bag as nice as yours but by paying less? So, purely a status symbol?

No I was saying I want something that others don’t have, so not mass produced, but is quality crafted. So I do care about how it looks.

Could anyone recommend a quiet luxury brand. Similar to Demellier? I want something others don’t have that stands out

I usually buy from Tusting. They're beautiful, well-made bags, and, crucially for me, made in the UK. I will not buy anything from China.

Why do you care so much? It’s a bag to carry stuff? So much angst over a trivial issue!
Anyone who can really afford to spend thousands on a bag wouldn’t give them this much thought tbh. You’re trying too hard. People are such fools!

SurnameChanged · 06/04/2025 13:45

It’s about how it makes you feel. Would you get the same joy from a fake as the real thing? People who are happy with fakes are surely just about impressing others.

I just buy stuff I like. And avoid anything with an identifiable logo. The idea of a bag advertising a brand by displaying garish letters is way too tacky and blingy for my tastes.

I cannot understand why anyone would buy a fake. Give me a plain bag from H and M over a fake designer tacky creation any day of the week.

I bought.a longchamp tote from Ebay- bnwt. It was about half the price of the ones from the longchamp website. When it arrived I did some research etc to check if it was a fake. It was. I bought one from longchamp.directly - they were so so similar. The fake didn't have real leather handles but this was difficult to tell and they needed to be side by side to see the difference. I sent the ebay one back. I see so so many longchamp totes these days and I presume a significant number are fake. I sometimes feel like a mug but also I wouldn't want a fake designer item. If you can't afford the original why do you want to pretend you can? It just seems like an unnecessarily silly thing to do, pretending to be wealthier than you are? Why? Just buy a bag you can afford that you love. Designer should be about quality. If it's not then you've probably been scammed or the company is more likely to take it back if it doesn't last very long or send a replacement. It's just a bit tacky to knowingly walk around with a fake.

I m in an industry where intellectual property and TM is inportant.
i would never buy fake anything.
i buy what i can afford. I save if i want something.
i dont want to participate in an industry i repulse.

each to their own though, but it is very sad that people think buying fake is ok.

company works hard at their design.

this world is going mad in the pretence, fakery of people. Save work hard and be proud of who you are - this is so much healthier

No I was saying I want something that others don’t have, so not mass produced, but is quality crafted. So I do care about how it looks.

But you literally have no ability to control whether other people have Gucci bags or not, whether they buy the actual bag or a well-made fake which is indistinguishable. So if your happiness depends on other people not having what you have, I’d try to find some less replicable way of singling yourself out.

I own a real Chanel bag. I bought a smaller version of the same style from a reputable seller in China. The leather is stunning, hardware heavy and comparable to a friends you cannot spot the difference. It was around £2-300 which is expensive for a replica obviously but a huge saving on the real deal.

I’m very tempted to sell my real bag (on which I’d make around a £5k profit) and buy the same as a replica but something is stopping me.

I think vintage chanel bags - you can’t get anything better. I feel the love that’s been put into making them. Now…yeah I’d be tempted to buy replica.

Unless the distinctive Gucci snaffle is non-negotiable, why not prioritise the quality of the materials and workmanship over the name when you buy a bag?

My favorite is hand made by an old Italian firm, not a household name in the UK, but it is beautiful. It cost a tenth of the price of a Gucci bag.

Can you share the brand please?

loveawineloveacrisp · 06/04/2025 13:49

Eeeeee another handbag thread where lots of people start getting sniffy about designer goods. Just buy what you like OP. I have Gucci, LV, Mulberry, all very much the real thing. I know they're not fake. If anyone else wants to assume that they are, I don't really care.

SurnameChanged · 06/04/2025 13:50

I think so many reality TV stars and influencers flash designer bags with the tacky logos now, that bags covered in Gs and LVs have lost any sense of sophistication nowadays. They are the opposite of aspirational and are just tacky.

Growlybear83 · 06/04/2025 13:51

I can’t imagine buying a bag because it was a certain brand - if I like a bag and I can afford it, I’ll buy it whether it’s from a well known expensive brand or primark. The only thing I try to avoid is buying any clothing with logos or monograms of any kind on, as I think they spoil bags, tops etc and look a bit tacky irrespective of the brand.

SansaStark90 · 06/04/2025 13:52

1AnotherOne · 06/04/2025 13:33

Check out eBay for vintage LV - especially those selling from Japan. Great prices!

I’ve been seeing them for a while now, and you can tell they are real and beautiful vintage numbers. But, they put as like a disclaimer we don’t cover importing costs. How much is that?

AnticleaAndLaertes · 06/04/2025 13:52

I have a number of fakes, I bought because I like them, the shapes etc. I was not about to spend hundreds on an artificially inflated bag.

I cannot for the life of me understand spending thousands on a handbag!

Well I love my LV Neverfull, it's real, cost loads but I absolutely love it and use it every single day.

I've got a fake LV small bag for evenings out but I got rid of all my other bags and just use these 2 now.

I don't want anymore but I will always have a nose through the LV bags on vinted.

You do know that the person who made the Chanel bag is doing it because they were paid to make the Chanel bag. As a wise woman once said’ what’s love got to do with it ?
The Chanel feels expensive because it’s made with the best materials by skilled craftsmen. They’re exclusive because their price means only the very wealthy can afford to buy them. Or those who will save up from their mediocre wages so that strangers in the street will think they have money. It’s all a huge con!

TENSsion · 06/04/2025 14:00

When I was in my twenties, I had fakes. Now I’m able to afford real ones, I don’t want them.

There’s got to be an Alanis Morisette song in that.

If the handles were not even leather then that was a poor fake. Top fakes are impossible to tell by anyone but an extremely experienced expert. Even then they can be fooled. without deconstructing and seeing the lining, inner stitch quality etc. it’s almost impossible to tell
What does happen is the fakes don’t tend to wear as well. But sometimes they do.
some brands now have chips inbedded. The counterfeiters are even counterfeiting those though.

Except if it’s a mirror replica of a non tacky bag then it won’t be tacky.

I wouldn’t buy either.

I just don’t understand it.

why pay more just for something to have a label on it?

I don’t believe all the “it’s better quality” garbage; as you say, they are all made in sweatshops.

Just buy what you like. Doesn’t have to be Gucci or fake Gucci. Designed stuff is all a con.

However, that cerulean blue, represents millions of dollars and countless jobs. It’s sort of comical how you think you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry.

When I say love, I mean hours of work with quality materials. Our economy would fall if we all made things outta love and passed them on for free. But you keep on thinking it’s a frivolous past time to care what bag you carry.

YABU. A fake is fake who would want that. Either have the real thing or not at all

Agree with this. I’m really not into designer items anyway but if I wanted one I’d buy the real thing.

Never really understood the whole moody designer gear thing even back in my younger days.
