Hottest day, just broken up from school - don't just pop roundnd

Yes done to death on here but my lovely friend has just popped round uninvited. Again. I live alone ( except for when DS is back from uni ) so it's just me to do everything.
It's 3 in the afternoon on a boiling day and I was in my tiny garden in a n old bikini reading Looking shite and sweaty ( she knows I love sunbathing).Just came in for a wee.
My house is one room downstairs so anyone coming round literally sees any mess ( sun-dried washing waiting to be ironed, life admin on the table some presents to be wrapped ),
The front door is that wobbly glass so people outside can see movement inside
She used to teach. Surely she knows that the first day you break up is a bloody holiday to do what you want. Just phone first it's not hard.

I don't usually do or get drop ins, but if you said that to me, I wouldn't be back.

Yes, but that’s the idea!

I couldn’t say that to a friend. Rightly or wrongly, I just couldn’t.

why not? surely a friend would completely understand? assuming they know what job OP has?

That means it’s worked! 😂

I wouldn’t have been too happy with that either. I’m currently in very ugly shorts and ignoring a very messy house! As PPs have said, pop a curtain or blind on the door but until you get that sorted, leave the toilet door open to block the view when you don’t want to be disturbed.

Yes toilet door open - brilliant!

I've just had a major brush with the grim reaper. Nobody cares about your mess, if you thought you were dying you'd be greatful for any visits.
Fwiw I am very messy. I still have packing boxes years after a move.
Untidy is not dirty imo.

I hope you're ok now x

@Overhaul54 I'd have pulled out another chair, passed the suncream and opened a bottle of wine. Life is short and good friends are priceless.

purpleme12 · 05/04/2025 17:05

I don't mind people popping round

Oh fgs, this drives me mad!! It's the old moan "I couldn't possibly go on for another day"! What about the rest of us?!!! The drama!

Where on earth are you that is boiling? Bikini, now in the UK?

I couldn't get too worked up about this, but then I like my friends.

That was the polite version! I don't have any qualms about people leaving my life because they can't handle honest communication, one less person to concern myself about, my time is my own.

Overhaul54 · 05/04/2025 17:11

She probably isn't judging. She's a lovely person

I feel embarrassed being bright red, very sweaty in a faded too small bikini with nothing shaved

I feel embarrassed I couldn't offer anything but tap water. I,' d even done the last ice cubes I don't have anything food wise as I'm on Mounjaro.

I just poked my head round and apologised and she was very sweet. However I've not seen her in ages and it made me feel really rude as I would have loved a catch up. Her and her husband are always very happy to have people round.

@Lucelady I have had a brush with death. I was fucking mortified my friend cleaned my kitchen whilst I was having my third blood transfusion.

It doesn’t matter what your reasons are. It sounds like you just didn’t want her around. Let her know that it’s not convenient right now but if you need an excuse say you’re expecting guests/getting ready to pop out/have a headache and add “I wish you’d texted me then I could’ve let you know”

Well yes. I only had tapwater , no ice no lemon
That's half the issue of people popping in when you live alone

everyone is entitled - whatever their job status - to have a day to themselves.
It is well known that most people really look forward to their first day of holiday/last day of work.

And a good friend would understand.

Mudkipper · 05/04/2025 17:30

Make yourself a little curtain and attach it to the door with Command Velcro. Then unplug the doorbell, the phone etc and pretend you’re out.

Well if you're not open to having guests then you should make sure they can't see you.

Though what is stressful on your "first day off" about having a chat with a friend, I totally fail to comprehend.

RosaBaby2 · 05/04/2025 17:32

I like my friends, couldn't ever be mad about one of them coming round.

LlynTegid · 05/04/2025 17:38

Agree with you 100%, that is one of the main benefits of modern communication.

stardust777 · 05/04/2025 17:38

I think it's best to be honest.

"Sorry friend, now isn't a good time. We should catch up soon though - I'll text you to get something in the diary."

I feel ya pain OP !!
dont come round unannounced, infact dont bother coming round at all !!! When I want to see u I’ll get in touch and suggest we meet somewhere out !!

Ouch. Do you have many friends?

Yes toilet door open - brilliant!

I was going to say just keep open the toilet door too in front of the front door, that’s an easy fix

I use to do this all the time in my old house when I went to bed just in case anyone tried to break in it would make a make it harder to get in

RosaBaby2 · 05/04/2025 17:32

I couldn't either.

But if I really wasn't up for it, I'd just use words 🤷‍♂️

I think they seem to be going out of fashion though.

TipsyPeachSnake · 05/04/2025 17:40

I’m not a fan of people turning up unannounced, it’s very inconsiderate. It doesn’t happen often as I no longer answer the door unless I am expecting someone.

RosaBaby2 · 05/04/2025 17:32

I'm sure OP likes her friends too. But there's nothing odd about not wanting them to pop around when you've earmarked some time to yourself. But equally, it's not a big issue, I'd just not answer the door.
Unlucky to have walked into the hall at the exact moment friend was knocking the door, but can always pretend you didn't hear the knock as were listening to music via earbuds if friend ever mentions it.

Ohnobackagain · 05/04/2025 17:50

@Overhaul54 you could leave the loo door open and nobody will see past it 😬
