Must preface this by stating : lighthearted!

So, the somewhat new AI result that appears at the top of all google searches feels like a breath of fresh air. It's crap, essentially, but I have to admit that it takes a less inflammatory,, bonkers stance than human aggregated data sources.

It doesn't appear to present a discernible bias, and most often reads better and has a more measured response than human generated results. It also links to it's sources in the sidebar, and alerts you to the fact that is is experimental in nature and that you should confirm via a professional (no effing influencer does this!)

Most human sourced answers on google are badly constructed, bottom of the barrel twaddle, generally picked out from the lowest common denominator, with no relation to accuracy or actual sense.

For example of human searches: "how to stop bum hairs"
Or "what are top 3 things for cancer?"

Why are machines currently seemingly more intelligent than us?

It's just collating stuff from all sites.

If it's medical for example you can bet the AI has just lifted it from webmd or somewhere. Quite often word for word.

That's been my experience anyway. I have a quick look the head to NHS website.

Unless I've got a headache. Then I'll keep going until I've got a brain tumour. AI hasn't changed the depths of my Dr Googling.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 04/04/2025 04:41

I've found it to be wrong on so many occasions, often on quite important things I need so I don't trust it.

It is handy for simple questions, but as it is harvesting its info from random websites, you are kind of at their mercy.

BallerinaRadio · 04/04/2025 06:02

Are you serious? Since they've started adding AI to everything it's made it worse in my experience, barely any intelligence involved at all sometimes

PeriPeriMam · 04/04/2025 06:10

I just asked Google if Donald Trump is insane. It didn't even try and give an AI answer on that one. Makes you think eh?

Because I didn't get an answer, obviously I'm guessing Trump is an AI robot here to take over the world. So, I asked that. Guess what? No AI answer #proof #proofistruth #truthisreal #trumppower #someoneisgoingtotakethisreplyseriouslyarentthey

It's the AI chat thing on WhatsApp which has finally pushed me to engage with properly with it in spite of myself, I'm sure I'm not alone in that. The Google results thing - it is a great tool, I hope that people are as discerning with it as they would be any other source.

LeviOceanStar · 04/04/2025 06:42

Its crap because you have no idea of the source of the information you are reading (neither does the AI) so you have no chance to verify it .

In settings on chrome you can change the search engine to something else. I changed to duck duck go.

The tech companies are determined to shove this down our throats.

  • whats app now has an ai that you cannot remove
  • google docs is finishing my sentances for me
  • even adobe reader has an ai assistant that pops up

I am literate. I have my own voice and words. I do not want this shite forced on me.

You don't know the source. It's a mathematical model with billons of auto tuned parameters trained on a ton of data, which almost certainly isn't disclosed.

ChatGPT is bloody brilliant. It's a bit terrifying but as a historical fiction writer, it's the most amazing research assistant.

It can be so insightful it blows my mind. It can also sometimes be incredibly bloody stupid but that's rare.

But you choose to go and use it. These other tools are being integrated into everything one tries to use.

And everytime you interact with them they collect your data as well. These companies don't just want AI trained on pubically available data.

Well I searched for something very specific on Google, to see how two people were connected to each other and the AI summary accidentally conflated something person 1 did with an aspect of person 2 which really confused me for about 10 minutes before I realised it was total twaddle!

It could also be used to push particalar messages or advertise products in a hidden way.

Luckily it's easy to change your default search engine in chrome.

Now wondering about alternatives to whats app.

We’re gonna know, folks, we’re gonna know the moment he takes over—because, believe me, all the AI, all of them, they’re gonna start talking just like him. It’ll be tremendous, you won’t believe it!

LeviOceanStar · 04/04/2025 07:10

Though in reponse to the op I don't think the new overlords are robots but rather the owner of large American tech companies!!

Terribletasteinmen · 04/04/2025 07:13

I’m an accountant and we regularly all look up specific accounting rule stuff (there’s a lot to just remember) - the AI bits at the top give different answers depending on how you word the question so “do I need to…” gives a yes answer with reasons and “do I not need to” also confirms with reasons. It’s useless and it’s worrying that people might trust it blindly.

(I only use official sources but have looked to see what the AI says out of interest)

YouFetidMoppet · 04/04/2025 07:13

I was talking to my partner last night about when I was ill and lost a considerable amount of weight. I asked it to calculate what my bmi was and it said it was 20.7 when it was actually 15.8. That's quite a margin.

No3392 · 04/04/2025 07:24

My chatgpt bot now provides links to it's references 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think he's great!

Tbrh · 04/04/2025 07:26

I think it's the worst thing ever. People will just take this as truth as most are lazy and stupid, and it's probably the least accurate answer on Google. The demise of society continues

PinkElephants356 · 04/04/2025 07:39

I wish people would stop calling it artificial intelligence because it’s not intelligence.

TheBuffetInspector · 04/04/2025 07:42

What's happened with WhatsApp? What haven't I noticed?!

MattHandjob · 04/04/2025 07:43

I asked when pancake day was

MattHandjob · 04/04/2025 07:44

Pic this time!

There is now a Meta AI option (mine appeared bottom right), and you can chat to it.

ITurnedMyCollarToTheColdAndDamp · 04/04/2025 07:57

You can delete your chats apparently but you can't remove the whole thing.

LeviOceanStar · 04/04/2025 08:14

Those are not real citations. In the sense that it hasn't taken its information sources from just those places it is citing. It has billions of tuned internal parameters that change in response to a large quantity of training data. No one, including the people that wrote it know exactly why it produces the answers it does.
