Must preface this by stating : lighthearted!

So, the somewhat new AI result that appears at the top of all google searches feels like a breath of fresh air. It's crap, essentially, but I have to admit that it takes a less inflammatory,, bonkers stance than human aggregated data sources.

It doesn't appear to present a discernible bias, and most often reads better and has a more measured response than human generated results. It also links to it's sources in the sidebar, and alerts you to the fact that is is experimental in nature and that you should confirm via a professional (no effing influencer does this!)

Most human sourced answers on google are badly constructed, bottom of the barrel twaddle, generally picked out from the lowest common denominator, with no relation to accuracy or actual sense.

For example of human searches: "how to stop bum hairs"
Or "what are top 3 things for cancer?"

Why are machines currently seemingly more intelligent than us?

Ahhh @ITurnedMyCollarToTheColdAndDamp . I hadn't noticed.

Why would I want to chat to it?

I've only just got used to the voice message thing as granddaughter's Mum uses it. It's still lots of "hi, ah bollocks, erm" "sorry, me again!" 🤣

TheBuffetInspector · 04/04/2025 09:08

I don't think I have it. I only use mobile data so it doesn't usually update without WiFi. Unless I'm missing the obvious.

You won't be able to miss it. Wondering what to use instead. Signal maybe? That could work with friends/family but for sports groups / class groups etc there would have to be a mass move away from it.

PaintDecisions · 04/04/2025 09:16

Are we reading the same AI results? Most of what I get offered is utter bullshit - it seems to pull random websites out with complete tripe.

It's also absolutely appalling at differentiating between different legal systems.

I have WhatsApp. It just doesn't update or back up on mobile data.

I'll have to go and stand outside Costa Coffee 😂

pelargoniums · 04/04/2025 09:21

I hate it. It’s shite trained on stolen, plagiarised property: 7.5 million books and 81 million journal articles. Engaging with it is immoral, frankly. It’s not artificial intelligence, that’s just a marketing term.

Or alternatively don't and then you get to keep the version without AI!

Surprised it doesn't update when your phone connects to your home wifi though.

Issue is how not to engage with it when it keeps popping up in every single bit of software I use and is often difficult or impossible to switch off.

It’s like the bastarding Word paperclip of yore, isn’t it? Just let me read my PDF in peace as I was perfectly capable of doing previously instead of AI assisting me! I’m going to go and live in a cave.

CookingFatCat · 04/04/2025 14:09

I write a lot at work, lots of minutes. Stick the transcript in chat gpt, ask it to summarise or bullet point, half the job done.
love it!
I still need a human (me) to make sense of it though.

CookingFatCat · 04/04/2025 14:12

@ITurnedMyCollarToTheColdAndDamp I don’t have AI on my WhatsApp?? It’s up to date too? 🤔

Jasnah · 04/04/2025 17:30

AI can be wonderful if used correctly. It is more empathetic than humans, gives advice unbiased and without judgement, and can therefore be excellent in role play, advice giving (on human interaction situations) and as a counsellor. It can be a wonderful tool for those who are socially awkward and still craving validation, or for those who want to immerse themselves in a fantasy world.

It is not yet good enough as a research tool without a human looking over its shoulder, but that won't be too long.

I don't have home WiFi. I pay £20 for Smarty unlimited a month and run phone, TV etc from that.

Hence having to loiter outside certain establishments occasionally 🤣

Seriously AI really is not empathetic, it is computer program and cannot experience emotions such as empathy. There are also huge issues with bias in AI systems.

Mine is set so it has to ask me if I want to update

I think I've got another 10 days on WhatsApp. I'm not quite clear what awaits me but I'll delay it as long as I can.

You don't need to experience empathy to express it. The outcome can easily be the same for the person receiving it.

And as long as you are not using AI as a serious research tool, but ask it questions about everyday human issues, the answers are much more balanced and unbiased than you would get from a human being. Which makes sense, given it has been programmed by numerous human beings.

A couple of thoughts. It's a simulation of empathy that's occuring. I wonder what the long term consequences are of someone feeling that they are listened to and understood but in reality they are interacting with a machine. There have already been problems with people feeling like they are in relationships with AI chatbots. My sense is that replacing human interactions with machine interactions will end up being bad for mental health.

Secondly, these systems are not written by programmers in a conventional way. There is lots of standard programming involved to tie everything together but the idea of a machine learning model is that it will be trained on large amounts of data. This might be data scrapped from the internet like our mumsnet posts for example. It isn't clear what data has been used and companies tend to be quite secretive about it. Then no one really knows, including the creators of the system, why a particular decison is made as there are billions of parameters inside which have been auto tuned based on the training data.

I was talking to my partner last night about when I was ill and lost a considerable amount of weight. I asked it to calculate what my bmi was and it said it was 20.7 when it was actually 15.8. That's quite a margin.

I sincerely hope your in good health now 💐

What sort of humans do you mix with if you think a computer is better?!

Vincenoirsrootboost · 05/04/2025 11:04

I love chat gpt. It’s brilliant for so many things and really saves time on endless googling.

It does make me chuckle to think of what we’d have thought 30 years ago.

My 5 year old has started whispering if he wants to say the word ‘Alexa’ in case ‘she’ hears him 😂 It’s all so bizarre really.

Tbrh · 05/04/2025 10:58

What sort of humans do you mix with if you think a computer is better?!

The normal, flawed kind, of course. The kind with their own agenda, their own bias, their own emotional triggers.

Do you know why people lie to their therapists? Fear of judgement.

And as has been pointed out by someone else on another thread, apparently people have rated "GP services" provided by AI as more empathetic than when it was provided by actual humans. It doesn't surprise me.

We live in a relatively golden era at the moment, where some freely-provided AI is still very open and free from active manipulation. I have no illusions that this will last, because AI is created by humans and every good intention will be abused eventually, no doubt for advertising and control in the long run. For now, I find it a fascinating and very useful tool.

Jasnah · 05/04/2025 12:14

And just to point out, there is a user on here who exclusively uses ChatGPT in their responses. Easy to spot when you know what you're looking for and recognise the speech patterns, and now I know their username I already know what kind of response will come.

That user is regularly quoted with approval and has huge amounts of people agreeing and telling them how well thought-out their response is. Clearly, empathy - however artificial - is better expressed in those posts than many others, where human users respond to the same topic.

I have noticed that creeping in here too, especially on posts about Russia/Ukraine there are a lot of posts that seem to have been written by AI often with a pro Russian bias.

AI generated posts are rampant on LinkedIn and Facebook. Now with it built into WhatsApp I expect people will use it for that too rather than drafting actual replies.

Personally I find it offputting and dislike it. Well another reminder to put down my phone and go talk to some actual humans. Or maybe my cat, at least she's another living being.

Thanks, it was a long time ago and I was very thin (i was skinny before, but had dysentry!), but it was shocking that it calculated it to be 20. Not great if you have ED issues.

I notice the weird Russian bots on here. I also noticed that governmemt policy ideas tend to get posted about before they are announced too.
